I'm a black man who grew up in a black American family and so my music knowledge is pretty limited to hip-hop, R&B, and pop. I'm very unfamiliar with "white people" music outside of pop, and could name very few songs by the most popular rock musicians who I only know by name. Of course I've heard plenty of it simply experiencing pop culture, but it's very passive. I know nothing.
I'd like to change that though. Where do I start? I like the sound of Rock, just never got into it.

Well, just start with classic rock and tell me what Bands you liked and why. Then we can point you to other stuff. Honestly inherent "whiteness " in music is really about rhythm, cadence, and structure. Blues and jazz while deeply influenced by African folk music, also borrows heavily from English and Gaelic folk music. So maybe try that stuff first.

Brotha here. I couldn't really go to heavy with Rock I've been like touch and go with it. But I really do like me some power ballads. They make me feel like I can take on the world and all it's problems. Esp songs from my childhood like You got the Touch by Stan Bush.Good luck.
