What are some good Chinese albums?
If you are talking about mainstream, it is really not worth paying attention to. The song-writing is formulaic and the lyrics are sappy if not comically melancholic. With that said, I would recommended this album Jay chou put out when he wasn't so shit.

Elephant Gym is Taiwanese if that counts
I'd love to know some good chinese act too

I mean one time i've been to little chinese girls singing competition and it was fantastic.

Please tell me there is such a thing as Chinese Freak Folk
On another note, since the Chinese language is tonal, does that not limit the extent to which they can experiment vocally? If a change in tone can indicate a change of word, does that not absolutely restrict, say, the ability to hold long vocal notes that shift in tone such as can be seen in Western music?

Faye Wong is fantastic. I loved her cover of Dreams in Chungking Express https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7yez4lXjBI

Fixed that for you
>>62991171
not really. tones aren't really as rigid and sometimes in songs they are altered very slightly from how you would pronounce it normally, making the lyrics understandable yet still make musical sense.
I've been listening to Taiwanese Pop lately, Jolin Tsai has some really catchy shit, Genie Chou is alright also, but I've been really enjoying Da Mouth lately. They recently released a very 80's inspired album and it has been on my wish list for awhile.

Otherwise, Summer Fades Away (Post-rock), Elephant Gym (Math rock), Deep Mountains (Black Metal) and ChthoniC (Symphonic Death Metal) are good Chinese/Taiwanese bands.

Seconded. Hedgehog is great
Anyone got any good albums from Hong Kong? My only exposure to Hong Kong music is from parodies of classic rock songs that my father shows me, and from shitty pop that my mother listens to, which sounds as homogeneous to me as the appearance of Asians to non-Asians.
Well enough time has passed with this thread. To summarise: there are no good Chinese albums
There was some fantastic album making the rounds years ago on /mu/. it was either Chinese or Japanese and I can't remember the translation of the name. It was something forest related, like Trees in the Mist, or Lost Forest or something like that. it was chilled out instrumental music and was high quality stuff.
Are there any good post-punk/post-hardcore/punk type bands (Mandarin or Cantonese, don't care)?
It's weird. I'm Chinese myself, but I was born and raised in the UK, so in a sense I'm very white washed. I don't really follow Chinese media much, so my perception of it is it's all sappy pop with not much variety. Japan's music scene seems infinitely better with lots of good bands from the genres mentioned above, though again it might just be my perception.

Not really. Doubt it would be acceptable in the eyes of the Party in any case.
