Pretty much. The original Mothers was a blues/rnb bar band that was given jazz and modern classical to play. Now I personally love The Mothers music more than a lot of Zappas other music, but he definitely got better musicians in time.

I guess so, I generally find the post mothers zappa generally got worse and worse, it seemed like a caricature of the worst elements of prog without anything particularly interesting going on. I thought he made better music working with less talented musicians. I'm sure the bad 80s production has a bit to do with it.

That's because you weren't paying attention. There is at least one brilliant song on every one of his later albums. But you don't pay attention to anything other than Money or Hot rats because that's not what Scruffy or CLT told you to do.

But well I also tag every classical album by the composer's last name only. Tagging classical stuff is a pain in the ass. And who gives a shit.

All the 60's mothers albums I tag as The Mothers of Invention because Frank Zappa might have wrote all the music but the rest of the band had their own personalities and brought their own humor. They also weren't afraid to take Zappa down a few pegs because they were older than him.
Hot Rats and everything after I just tag as Frank Zappa because he came into his own and got enough fame to have full creative control.

Seems like a bit of a mess if you go by what the original album label says, for example:
Original MoI albums = The Mothers of Invention
Lumpy Gravy = The Abnuceals Emuukha Electric Symphony Orch. and Chorus
Grand Wazoo = The Mothers
One Size Fits All = Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention
Roxy & Elsewhere = Zappa/Mothers
Bong Fury = Frank Zappa/Captain Beefheart/The Mothers
So you have a mix of The Mothers of Invention and just The Mothers and sometimes Zappa is mentioned separately and it's just weird that Grand Wazoo is a Mother album, but Waka/Jawaka is a Zappa album even though it's essentially the same people and released in the same year
