"I Got the Blues" is considered the first published blues song and Anthony Maggio was white. However this is sort of misleading. Maggio wrote and published the song after hearing it from a black musician in New Orleans. It's pretty clear that the blues originated in black culture and it's not surprising that none of it was published considering the social status of black people in the late 19th century/early 20th century.
It's sort of like saying the first person that wrote down a folk tale "invented" it.
