Do you think its fair to classify hip hop into two general categories:
1. Smart hip hop
2. Stupid hip hop
1 is hiphop where the lyrics are intelligently and lovingly crafted with possibly multiple layers of meaning, complex themes and commentary etc. This can include wordplay like onomotapoeia, alliteration and so on to a lesser extent but thats not the focus.
2 is hiphop where lyrics are braindead, uninspired and completely unoriginal such as rehashed talking about drugs, bitches, money, guns, fronting, etc.
I'm not implying that 1 or 2 is better to listen to -- in fact I'd argue there's a lot of 2 that is way more pleasing to listen to than 1 because of excellent production or catchy lyrics and so on.
Production and overall listening 'enjoyment' is completely orthogonal to both 1 and 2

exactly. I personally listen to so many genres i can see the appeal of both ignorant and introspective hip hop. I personally would'nt listen to earls really deep and slow tracks in a car full of my friends but that dosnt mean its not good music. I dont want to THINK in that atmosphere I want to FEEL. That is the main difference between the two genres i think. Its Feeling vs Thinking but both genres can envoke some kind of response wether it be physical or cerebral.
