The Love Below/Speakerboxxxxxx was the only hip-hop album. Other than that, it hasn't. I mean, the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou has won, which had Stankonia nominated, Ray Charles won over College Dropout, U2 won over Late Registration, HERBIE FUCKING HANCOCK won over Graduation, GKMC lost to Daft Punk (what the actual fuck, though) and now To Pimp a Butterfly

I've listened to the whole thing, it's very repetitive, both sonically and thematically. Her voice is very strong, but she doesn't have something as emotive as Fionna Apple/Carole King, or as unique and soaring as Bjork. It's generally a pretty forgetable experience, but the crispness, and accesibility of it is worth some admiration. Beating TPAB is a pretty big piece of bullshit in my mind.

Grateful Dead is what happens when you get a group of Beatles and Beach Boys wannabes who have a glimpse of talent on a guitar/bass/drums and no talent in production so they create a couple of albums that are mixed like ass and are then called 'deep' and any technical gaffs are just flat out ignored.
