Post the tracks you're working on, discuss general music composition.

>/prod/ wiki - still looking for contributors (wink, wink, WINK)
http://mu-sic-production.wikia.com
There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a SoundCloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Remember to check other peoples' clyp.it links to keep the thread healthy.

soundcloud would only be bad if people spammed their stuff in every thread. Why would it even matter if some obscure page got 20 more views or something

The problem isn't a few people posting stuff to soundcloud for real criticism. The problem with soundcloud is once you allow people to start posting them, then you will have people in here looking for "criticism" when in reality they just want to advertise.

>"I'm stupid enough to think anyone trying to get soundcloud plays/followers would waste time doing so in a small anonymous production community instead of somewhere that they might be successful"
Every small thing you do helps. Like you know from mixing. A follow here, a like there, 20 plays here and there, it adds up. Having other creatives as followers is also a boon, since they are good followers. But it doesn't matter whether or not it makes SENSE, what matters is that, regardless of sense, people actually do it, and we want to avoid it.

>>62611996
>Listen man, it's about the integrity of the thread.

No, it isn't. One or two soundclouds per thread is not enough to qualify as a problem

How do you incorparate crackle, or ambient noises like rain, city noises, wind, rustling leaves into your music the right way?

What i mean is, when i listen to artists like Burial rather than just having ambient sounds as a seperate track and have the music play over it it always feels like the atmosphere of the ambient sounds is enveloping the rest of the music if you know what i mean. It's kind of hard to describe.

Another example would be Andy Stott
>>
>>62612639
I lowpass them and keep the volume down quite a lot.
You can't just chose any recording. It has to fit the mood of the track.
>>
>>62612639
It's a form of mood writing. Maybe try to listen to some rain samples and think what would go well with them, not the other way around.
Also, what this guy >>62612821 said.
>>
>>62612821
>You can't just chose any recording.

Oh i didn't mean in terms of songwriting and composition but rather sonically. from a sound design kind of perspective. For example if you make Lo-Fi music but suddenly have a crystal clear synth in the mix it feels unfitting.

In Burials music it always kind of feels like the rest of the instruments playing is affected by the sound and drenched in it. But not in a "drown everything in reverb" kind of way
>>
>>62612988

I think Boards used a lot of cassettes. They would bounce the sounds back and forth between multiple cassette players until it was degraded enough, also they'd use especially shitty cassette recorders and overdrive the inputs.

You don't need a USB to cassette recorder, just use the headphone outputs of your computer or better yet, a decent audio interface.

I just got myself a USB interface (Focusrite Scarlett) after years of messing around on a multitrack tape recorder, and I've hit a huge road block with recording drums. The drums sound incredibly weak and flat when played back. When I recorded to tape, the drums sounded pretty close to how they do in person.

Is there some kind of special setting that I have to tweak? I'm using Ableton Lite because it came with the USB interface and I don't have anything else. I'm hitting the drums as hard as humanly possible but it sounds like my drum kit is made out of foam and towels when I play back the recording. Mic is an SM57.

"that kind of shit" isn't lo fi at all, it is actually hi fi

to get that boc sound you need a lot of analog gear, saturator, cassette tapes, etc
>>
>>62615296
that is analog gear with tape
>>
>>62615321
yes, tape, but not reel to reel, which is not lo fi at all.....
>>
>>62615271
Teac made a shit ton of machines, so their 2tracks are usually cheap. The more obscure Japanese brands fetch the crazy prices.

>>62615296
You can do lo-fi with a reel2reel, just over saturate the preamps.
>>
>>62615271
good ones aren't cheap though, especially if you want a really good condition one and start factoring in all the other things needed like good AD/DA, calibration tape, a proper degausser ... also as anon already said fresh tape is rare and good tape is costly as well

Is there a way to change the tempo/time signature midway through a song in Logic? Like if I want to have a longer song that changes speeds/time signatures at some point can I do that?

Interesting textures you got there. I'd say, you should resample this and try and get a sort of Aphex Twin vibe. Also needs more low end a bit more punchy drums, especially dat snare. Try sidechaining a bit of the synths on them, around the middle - end you have that low synth that kinda clases with the kick.

They need to occupy different places of the frequency spectrum. For example you can't have 2 sub basses, like, just one and then lowcut the other one and live it's top gritty end. Just an example tho, I dunno what genre you're doing.

dongles piss me off.

their anti-piracy tactic makes paying customers suffer.

Just spend $800 on software, now you need to buy this ugly thing that sticks out of your computer for more money.
want to use your DAW on the go, don't forget your dongle.
oops your dongle broke, now you need to spend another $50 on a new one and can't use your DAW until it comes in.
only one USB port left for your new hardware piece, sorry the dongle goes there.

like wtf were they thinking?

Poorfag please. We all know the only reason you don't like dongles is because you want to pirate the software easier.

I use iLoks every day and I don't have any of the problems you mentioned.
>>
>>62621907
dongles are gay but i really like cubase so i deal with it

atleast with steinberg you only have to buy the new eliscenser for 30 dollars and they just replace your liscenses

ilok on the other hand is horrible because of their middleman "pace anti piracy"

the faggots at pace will charge you for fucking everything they possibly can get away with and paying 30$ a year just incase it breaks is a money drain

you can't tell me losing 1/3 of your USB ports on your laptop isn't inhibiting.
>>
>>62609426

>>
>>62622231
I bought FL specifically because there is virtually no copy protection aside from registry check at startup, I can run it on as many pcs as I want, and the updates are free.
>>
>>62622103
software liscense manager causes way more issues than the dongle imo
>>
>>62622231
I'm not running protools on a laptop though, my interface isn't really portable, and my setup just doesn't make sense like that. Maybe if I was doing the whole laptop DJ thing, I might be mad about losing a USB port, but then I wouldn't be using anything that requires a dongle.
>>
>>62622231
I've the same issue, not with a dongle. Just with shit like a mouse and whatnot. I use a multi USB-hub but with hard drives it can decrease their performance. I try to plug those directly to the laptop.

I'm getting a lot of crackle since using C6 and I don't really understand why. There is no visible clipping going on on the master level within the C6 and I have only been using it to simulate hi-pass/low-pass effects (not automated). L2 on output (last in chain naturally) has been working fine with software synths, but when it comes to audio clips something still isn't right. I have tried using an L2 on individual channels as well, and even then it is only reducing intermittently by 2-3db on peaks but there artifacts still presenting themselves.

I'm at a loss, please help.

increase buffer size
>>
>>62622997
wait, you mean cubase 6, or waves c6?
>>
>>62623039
I don't see how this can help given the more CPU intensive tasks with software synths are working fine. Audio would surely ask a lot less, no?

>>62623084

>>
>>62623084

buffer size isn't about the cpu though, it's memory

I know Waves plugs don't like FL and need buffers of fixed size supplied. Is there such an option anywhere in Logic?

Is it because they're using some intel-specific extensions and optimizations? Bunch of pricks.

Less is better, but whatever feels comfortable and doesn't crackle. If you're not playing live, it basically doesn't really matter.

Sounds like a standard piano synth with two tremolo effects running - one on the right hand piano line running an order of magnitude faster than the left hand part. Then there's a fake vinyl crackle. Should be pretty straightforward to recreate.
