By being too easily satisfied with themselves they stopped when their songs were good. If they'd worked them out, been more rigorous with their musicality, been more demanding of themselves, those songs would have been great, not merely good.
I'm not a Springsteen fan but I saw a documentary on him in which he says that before Born to Run the record company said something like, "This is your last chance to make an album."
And he explained that they werent just guys in a band, that they were professional musicians, this was their livelihood, so they had to go beyond the best they could do, they had to push until it was undeniably great.
I wish Animal Collective had had that kind of motivation, but they didn't. And them music, sweet as it is, shows that.
It should have been the new millenium's Pet Sounds or Abbey Road, but it fell well short.

Is it strange that I can't stand listening to any emo albums because of the vocals but I really enjoy deathconsciousness? I wouldn't consider deathconsciousness emo necessarily but the vocals definitely have an emo vibe to them. But even American football, which has great instrumentation, I couldn't finish listening to because the vocals were so terrible

well put. and I agree. there are some parts, particularly the endings of songs on that album that if fleshed out could have elevated MPP to one of the defining albums of our generation. they have the talent, but need greatness of ambition that inspired the greatest music.
on another note. Springsteen ends born to run the song with a fade out, which has always pissed me off. thankfully Jungland is the best closer ever.
