Thanks for this, really new to shoegaze and wanting to listen to more. First shoegaze band I listened to was Codeine, some others are Whirr and True Widow. Really like the genre so far

i can see what you mean.. it's mostly instrumental post rock like godspeed or this will distroy you. sun devoured earth has some albums with a more blackmetal/gaze influence as well and i think he venture out a bit more with samples and soundbites. his sound is a bit more bleak as well

Please tell me you've listened to My Bloody Valentine...
I expect you have, but if not, Loveless. NOW.
The other two "main essentials" are Slowdive's Souvlaki, which I recommend immensely, and Ride's Nowhere, which is closer to the noise pop end of the spectrum, but is still a really good listen.
Again, you likely know all of this, but you said you were new to the genre and these are some classics. Have fun listening

Don't do this. Don't jump into the "Essentials", as they're actually the best the genre hast to offer. Work your way to them slowly. I'd have loved to not being introduced to shoegaze by Loveless and Souvlaki, because sincerely there's nothing than can top it.

If something has guitars, distortion, reverb and interesting texture (but not necessarily from a guitar) would you consider it in the family of shoegaze? How far does something matching that description have to go before you would put your foot down on it no longer being related to the genre? Just something I've been thinking about recently, both due to imagining new approaches to the genre and as a response to the common cry that shoegaze is dead or stagnant. It seems that "dreamy noisy guitar rock" has a lot of space left and that it probably contains both things that are unexpectedly shoegaze and things that stray too far.
>>
>>62583081
I dunno man, I'd even consider some albums by deftones to be shoegaze in a way. Better be open than narrow it down, right?

I used to think this as well. Once I saw >>62575484 I just started to view "pure" shoegaze as having 3 "true" phenomenal albums with the genre spilling and bleeding everywhere and having it's characteristics be a part of many other great albums.

What I'm trying to say is. Just accept that shoegaze itself has only a handful of excellent albums. If you like the sounds of the genre then there is a lot of stuff which shares characteristics with is or was influenced by it in some way that you are also gonna like and is great.

For example someone who loves Souvlaki is might like slowcore, I do, I'm getting into the genre now because of shoegaze. If you like metal you are probably gonna love Alcest and The Angelic Process, these don't really sound like Souvlaki, Loveless or Nowhere but the influence is clear.

Then again I could be talking out my ass.

Fairly true. There are some stunningly good and lesser popular albums as well though. Luckily for me, I didn't like Loveless much at first, save the track "Sometimes". I liked Slowdive though and slowly got into noisier music, and began to appreciate the dreamy, often female vocals, tried Loveless and it's become a literal obsession of mine ever since. My favorite album of all time.

I'm glad this happened to me, because it's true, I started with bands like Chapterhouse, Astrobrite, Adorable, The Telescopes, Cocteau Twins, The Boo Radleys, Swirl and others of the like. Older bands but bands that didn't have the heavy shoegaze sound down, except for Astrobrite, I treated them as my MBV, completely surprised/blown away that they were not the hottest shit ever. I avoided MBV out the misconception that they were Bullet for My Valentine. Every time I saw them recommended I was a little confused, but I was younger, had lastfm and didn't know about 4chan. So when I did listen to Loveless it blew my mind.

Started when I watched the movie Hard Candy and loved Elephant Women by Blond Redhead, where last.fm recs lead me to shoegaze. I love the internet.

This was one of my favorites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F83K3NSpKgI
>>
I asked this recently but never came back and checked the thread for any answers, so sorry to ask again.

I remember there used to be videos on youtube of a guy discussing Shoegaze, he talked about it form his eyes at the time of bands like Slowdive and MBV releasing music. He was outside in the snow for a portion of it. I also recall he was a popular music blogger/vlogger/reviewer or whatever, I only knew him for the Shoegaze videos tho. I think they were removed, does anyone know why? Or where I could see them?

For me it's hard for a shoegaze album to be bad and not enjoyable. If they're branching off the main 3 then I'll probably love it. Sure there's some not very good albums out there but generally they're listenable and nice.

But then again there's stuff like Asobi Sekusu that sounds completely different and has it's own sound. Japanese shoegaze generally has it's own style and is much different from the typical kind that just takes from loveless.
Shojoskip, mikgazer, Kinoko Teikoku, wintermute, my dead girlfriend, plastic girl in closet, whoo There's tons of stuff by them that's great. Koreans bands too. While maybe not all those are strickly shoegaze they are still part of the genre.

They seem to be taking a pretty liberal approach to what counts as shoegaze. There's dream pop, ethereal wave, space rock, noise pop and slowcore all mixed in with the actual shoegaze. I guess they're related genres, though it still kind of tweaks my tism.

LOL, WAY more than that. It's a relatively known genre, even outside of /mu/ and is decades old.

And yeah, it's perfectly reasonable to get 500 likes, but it depends. Get your name out there and you could get thousands. Put it on bandcamp for purchase. If you don't share it at all, you'd get less than a hundred for years probably.

Obviously→ Nothing - Guilty of Everything
If you like Nothing you'll like Whirr (based band). Maybe you could try Pity Sex. All of which are nu-gaze bands.

>nu-gaze

I really fucking hate this name. It sounds like a deragatory off-shoot of shoegaze.
>>
>>62628782
sorry, just wanted to say that they're relatively new bands.

This. Nu-gaze is too close to nu metal, which is almost universally considered a garbage genre.

You have to play the waiting game on Discogs for a well priced LP.
I usually buy shirts when I go to shugazi shows. Try their official sites.

Are there any shoegaze releases to look out for this year?
>>
>>62627966
tBh I don't have an issue with buying bootleg shirts

Am I wrong for this?

New Nothing, I think

Yamaha SPX90.

I may make a cover, and other than the guitar (I have no real reverb yet), and the synth sounding samples, it sounds excellent.
I think I found the EXACT BBC sample sounds that Kevin used in the song to produce that low frequency rumble.

I'm the guy who said I bought one in the last thread. It'll be here Friday.

You can use other reverb pedals/rack effects as well. Check this out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrXuvDRSwN8
