nah, MBDTF is more like breaking bad

no, while i agree sopranos is the best tv show ever made, i just mean their tales of excess, told from the pov of megalomaniacal but likeable anti hero

I disagree, twin peaks and filosofem are about the darkness lurking in the woods and how it effects the people who encounter it
varg killed people after being forced to live in the norweigan cold for 19 years much like the way the black lodge affected leland and other residents of the town

honestly I never got Mad Men, you're probably going to be like 'of course' in response to this, but I really couldn't finish the second season. None of the drama that was happening seemed new or engaging for a show of the type. I couldn't care less about affairs.

The Wire is definitely up there. Someone contribute to the thread already.

None of those shows would even exist without the sopranos, it ushered a new era of tv where serialized, episodic content with no overwhelming plot dominated tv for half a century.

The only show you listed that could compete is the wire, but sopranos never had a bad season, whereas season 5 of the wire was a mess.

every episode that I've seen has a consistent plot/theme with humor that relates to it, and there is even continuity between several episodes (mainly with who has sex with who and which characters are actually related and all that)

nice

haven't watched much tv in a while, wondering if I could be recommended something with the same feeling of Soundtracks For The Blind
>>
>>62591342
not much tv comes anywhere close, but if i had to recommend something i'd say twin peaks. its a slow fuck like stftb, u really gotta watch the whole series (only 2 seasons) to fully appreciate it. it also reminds me of the album because of the variety. it has funny quirky moments and out there characters, much like volcano, but generally is dark, moody, and atmospheric

Thank you, I've seen the band name everywhere but never listened. I love this album so far
>>
>>62593447
happy to have helped, theyve been my favorite band since i was 15, pre mu
>>
>>62594840
I'm moving backwards from The Mollusk, just got done with the 12 country songs album. This might be the band I've been looking for. It reminds me of Beck's Mellow Gold or some of MGMT's stuff, both have humor to keep the brilliance from seeming pretentious and boring to me.
>>
>>62575250
Yes it is. easily
>>
>>62595673
i like mgmt alot too, even their self titled. each of weens albums is so unique in the scope of their discog, and each individual song varies so much from the next its amazing. my favorite is quebec, followed by chocolate and cheese and godweensatan. the pod is finally growing on me now after years of it not clicking. i also feel white pepper doesnt get the respect it deserves. i like pure guava, but i think it has the most "miss" songs out of any of their albums, while simultaneously having my favorite ween song, sarah. i really recommend that one, its so slow and sweet and sad its beautiful.

Each song of weens is making me laugh and I don't know why. It's interesting that each album is unique seeming how each song is different with each album. You'd think they'd run into themselves eventually but so far as a new listener that hasn't happened. I love MGMT as well, it was a grower or a thrower for a lot of people but it clicked immediately for me. I love you too, death is my favorite I think or the last song. They do existentialism so well and turns it around as warm and inviting to me. I can't wait to listen to more of Ween, I'll get through Chocolate and Cheese and listen to that song. I like slow, sweet and sad. That description sounds like "It's gonna be alright" or "A tear for eddie" as I'm listening to it right now.
>>
>>62575763
yo must not be a white upper class American then
>>
>>62596388
sarah is a lot like both of those ween songs for sure, u hit the nail right on the head. the funniest ween stuff for me is off quebec and their first two albums. particularly the song pollo asado. but about mgmt, i was really hyped for the s/t so i was biased and my first listen was on like 3 or 4 pot brownies so it burned alot of the songs into my brain and i fell in love. congratulations was a landmark record for me, and i ended up liking mgmt just as much. my fav songs off it have to be plenty of girls, mystery disease, and alien days. i dont think mgmt as a band and especially as an album gets nearly enough attention around here. with painting with just dropping, it reminds me so much of the s/t. even though i think animal collective is better, i still cant see why mgmt is practically hated on /mu/.
>>
>>62597085
Congratulations broke me open to everything. They are "my band". I remember the excitement I got hearing the intro to Cool Song no. 2 in that promo video they released. I know everyone is different but MGMT should be said as one of the greats in the future along side AC and now Ween for me. I wonder what the reception would have been like had they released Congrats first and then OC. I get the feeling that a lot of people on here are selfish with their music. They want something to call their own where only a select few can hear. It's like trust issues or something, everyone wants to be authentic and up to date. Fickle people. It's one thing to be open to everything but it's nothing more than a fashion statement for some to be as snobby and boring as possible to make up for a non existent personality where personalities run slim. Animal Collective is another band that broke me. I remember hating them and actually calling them the worst band in the world lol little did I know years later they'd become one of my favorites.

This is one of the best (non general) threads i've seen on this board in a long time.
I might suggest:
>twin peaks
>STGSTV
Can't really explain why, but they've got this common sense of mystery, and maybe twin peaks' synthy ost reminds me to the synths on STGSTV
>>
>>62596364
But that's wrong. Season 4 of The Sopranos is better than any season of The Wire.
>>
>>62575367
The underlying feel of Loveless and Twin Peaks I can relate to, that weird dreamy other-world.. but then Loveless gets to that feeling the opposite way Twin Peaks does. Im not well articulated enough to explain myself but maybe I can reduce it to quietness in twin peaks and loudness in loveless

(my favorite show and my favorite album though)
