First of all, I just want to start off by saying that MBDTF is (or at least was, maybe until now) my favorite album of all time overall. It's definitely a masterpiece. Is big and beautiful and it's designed to be a masterpiece. It checks all the required boxes and passes all the required benchmarks for a masterpiece. And while I think it's an amazing piece of work for being able to do that, the simple truth is that it was made to be easy to digest. I think TLOP is just operating on an entirely different level.
If MBDTF is Kanye at his most grandiose and Yeezus is Kanye at his most raw, then TLOP is Kanye at the perfect balance. It's much more nuanced than either of those albums and manages to transcend their messages to something much more meaningful. MBDTF and Yeezus were both very personal albums that spoke to Kanye's emotional state at the time they were made. MBDTF is Kanye at his low point, Yeezus is Kanye at his most boastful and confident. TLOP strives to ascend above those specific feelings and connect with everyone on a higher level, I think.
MBDTF is a beautiful album, but compared to TLOP it's also very simple. That's why right now I'm really leaning towards TLOP being is best work overall. It'll take some more listens for me to finally make that call, but right now it feels like something on a whole new level for Kanye.

I know I'm gonna sound like a giant faggot here but to understand the reception MBDTF got you have to understand that it relied a lot on the timing and context and expectations. MBDTF is essentially a consolidation of Kanye's previous 4 albums which were all very different and well-received, and it combined all this in a cohesive way while also including new elements and a new narrative style that he hadn't done before.
Let me put it this way, imagine an artist you're a fan of putting out an album that is literally exactly what you were wanting as a fan when you heard "new album coming," and it even goes a step or two beyond that.
I wasn't a giant Kanye fan or anything. I was as much a fan as the next guy, but he wasn't one of my favorite artist or something. If my memory serves right, College Dropout came out my freshman year in high school and this my junior year of college. Those 4 previous albums were ubiquitous during those years so everyone was very familiar with them and a lot of people were at least a casual fan. I wasn't on /mu/ or reading any music sites and didn't know of the critical acclaim or whatever. I distinctly remember in the fall of '10 seeing this album had leaked, downloading it, burning it, popping it in my car, and the second the beat dropped on "Dark Fantasy" I had a smile on my face the whole way through and was engrossed in a way that I'm not sure I had experienced with an album up to that point, and it instantly became heavy rotation. It was everything I could have possibly wanted out of it.
Now consider that a lot of people at the time, including critics, had the same expectations and hopes for this album, and when it met all of those expectations and then some it felt like a home-run. If critics gave his other albums a 9 or 9.5 when they came out, it only made sense to them to give this one a 10... (too long had to split it)

I have to say after not hearing Kanye for a good couple years and thinking 808s wasn't really that great. Hearing Dark Fantasy put a big smile on my face. I know this is copypasta but this is a good description of how MBDTF felt at the time. 2010 was an amazing year for music and MBDTF still stood out from the pack. It was unbelievable ok that first listen, like seeing a movie you didn't know was great and being blown away.
