Went to Gibson factory in Memphis with Bassfriend, was pretty cool aside from the Neckbeardy tour guide who looked a little too smug for getting a tour guide job. Also the guy had to speak through a mic because of how loud the production was and for some reason the speakers they used were just the shittiest and it was sort of hard to take this dude seriously when he was talking about the quality assurance that they maintain while speaking through a blown-out speaker.

No, but a now-defunct guitar shop hosted a Fender Master Builder talk where one of their builders came in and talked about what it was like working for Fender. I think I equated it with him making custom shop guitars, but looking online it seems there's very few "master builders" at Fender at any given time and their guitars are, as marketing would have you believe, cut from a different cloth.

He was an incredibly nice guy and fielded questions for an hour and a half or so, talking about how there (was? is?) this one lady who made the majority of the highest end Fender pickups and wound the coils by hand, perhaps for the Master Built line exclusively. There's a lengthy apprenticeship program and I suppose a slot opens up and you're eventually called to fill in and put your signature on fancy Fenders. I wish I remembered more, but the gist was that it was a dream job where you just fuck around with and make beautiful guitars all day and watch them get played by incredibly high-profile names to help the brand overall. Coolest bit was hearing him talk about all these huge dadrockers and 80's stars that he built custom guitars for and offer history into Fender builds.

Fuck, why'd you have to go, Pro Guitar Shop...

The Joyo compressor actually looks nicer.
But I'm sticking to the reverb machine.

Is it worth staying in a plebby cover band to gain experience in playing with other people? I like the most of the people decently well but there's some stuff that seriously gets on my nerves:

>band wants to play classic rock and shit like Imagine Dragons and Mumford and Sons.
>I've not really got any songs added to the setlist and I've sort been giving them more well known artists I enjoy (Nirvana, Weezer, etc, not that these are my favorite, but people have a certain name recognition of these bands at the very least). The closest I've come is an OTC song.

>Certain people in the band think that you should always play to your audience no matter what. This means playing anything outside the 150 rock songs your average southerner knows is most likely not going to fly.
>No one gives two fucks about guitar tone, nobody uses pedals and they rely just on their amp settings. I guess this would be acceptable if their amp settings were decent, but they're shit at operating them.
>Other two guitarists both play strats. I think one is a Squire.

Give me some advice /GG/, what do I do? Stick it out til my friend who plays the bass gets better or just quit?

>>
>>62558107
yeah, it's worth it to gain experience but the quality of the experience matters. Do you have a tight drummer, are the other guitarists good? Don't worry about the tone thing, it doesn't have anything to do with the value of the music from a musicianship perspective. Also:

If by indie hipster shit you mean Mumford and Sons and the like I'd be inclined to agree with you.

I don't play any other kind of music live, but I do indie a bit so oh well.

>>62558206
>yeah, it's worth it to gain experience but the quality of the experience matters. Do you have a tight drummer, are the other guitarists good? Don't worry about the tone thing, it doesn't have anything to do with the value of the music from a musicianship perspective.

Other guitarists I sort of carry a little bit, both are decent at what they do (classic rock), but really they only have one switch. This means I constantly hear the same fucking solos every practice. I would say that technically they might be better at lead parts than me, but this is only because they rehearse the same lead parts for weeks on end. Drummer is pretty good if not a little rough around the edges.

>one of those better be lap steel

It's essentially only two because one's tone is so bad you can't hear her. Both of the others want to play lead parts. All the lead parts.

If any of you bass players out there are looking for a cheap all tube head check out the Bugera 1960. While designed as a guitar head they're a plexi clone, which was later transformed into the superbass.

I used one for a little while and it was extremely loud, it has no master volume/separate gain either. They go used for about $250-$350.

Dear /mu/ I have played guitar (Acoustic and electric) for a while now around 2 years, I have really leaned towards acoustic because of the simplicity and the ability to sing over chords which was always fun for me. I got an amp for christmas, and have begun starting to use my electric guitar again, now I know every guitarist is different, and I have ''guitar goals'' for myself, but dont really know how to go about accomplishing them.

I dont want to be just one of those guys who learns others material, I was never into playing other peoples music, Initially when I first started it was fun to learn some popular riffs but what I really would like to do is:

-Play blues, doom, and psych rock esque music
-Be able to improvise and basically jam out over backing tracks
-Be able to utilize the entire fretboard

As of now I only know the minor pentatonic and blues scale, how can I get better? Is there anything else I can learn in terms of scales, or something that will help me to improv solo better? I heard memorizing every major note on the fretboard can help you solo is that true?

Sorry if I sound autistic, im still new at it all, thanks so much

Picked up this little guy at a flea market in brand new condition in the box for $50 at a flea market.

Wanted a practice amp for some rock-esque or bluesy tones without pedals and the speaker on it sounds really good and warm.

The headphone jack doesn't seem to sound anything like the speaker though... Is this normal? I've historically always run bass heads and PA speakers so that my sounds were always my pedals and guitars as opposed to like a specific set of speakers or something, and my headphones/line out always sound pretty much spot on to my speakers because they have no personality which is exactly what I wanted until now, I guess.
>>
>>62558860
Picked up the amp, that is. Had the guitar for a decade now
>>
>>62558809
learning songs is the best way to learn a style. The difference between "just playing other people's stuff" is that you think about the composition. Understand the rhythm and what parts of what scales are being played. Understand the harmonies between the instruments and vocals.

Tele neck pickup that cuts through for jazz?
>>
>>62558909
You're putting the cart before the horse. If you truly wanted to understand the reasoning behind solos, chord progressions, and what notes are used in a song and why, you start with theory. Grab the Berklee Press Modern Method for Guitar and go through the material while supplementing it with any text on guitar theory, perhaps one pertaining to the style you wish to play and maybe even a "history of" for better understanding.

Or, if you want to be able to play most anything with ease, you learn jazz. A jazz guitarist can do just about anything, and it's necessary to be able to read music and understand the theory behind compositions. A competent jazz guitarist will out-solo near any lead guitarist if only by virtue of their understanding, and be able to improvise it on the spot. There's nothing bad about only being able to write songs beforehand, but if you can grab that Modern Method book, learn some Maj7/Min7th chords and your full scales, understand the fretboard, and practice improvising to standards, you'll be more than prepared for anything else. Better yet that jamming with jazz musicians is way more constructive than a bunch of fellows who stopped short of learning the meaning of a triad, you'll learn a lot more.
>>
>>62560031
can't tonight man, but if you come on again this time tomorrow i will post my attempt
>>
>>62558682
The best way to start playing your own stuff is first knowing some theory, i guess you already know that stuff so you should learn all the modes, that is all you need for pretty much any solo, from the simple blues to any fast metal solo you like, then learn some songs from folks you like, genres you want to learn, observate the tabs and try to figure what mode they are in, what technique the composer is using to write all that stuff, in a few months you will be great
>>

>>
>>62560150
yes
>>
>>62560074
I should add that there's nothing wrong with learning chords and tabs to your favorite songs, but don't get stuck in the purgatory of doing so and being left helpless without direction aside from "muh tabs". Get your chords down and finger strength learning open note chord tunes, delve into being able to play barred chords, and then tackle theory. I wouldn't recommend rushing into it first thing as it's not exactly fun to start, but once you learn how to liken chord progressions to song keys and then soloing on the fly within those keys the magic really starts.

Suss out your favorite tunes with sheet music too once you begin to learn to read music. Tabs are a crutch, plain and simple. They're good for explaining some of the more nuanced stuff like when to mute, hammer-on/pull-off, and what not, but sheets will offer so much more in terms of teaching yourself music.

Spending this Valentine's Day with my one true love, the one who's voice brings I smile to my face every time I hear it, the one who stays in tune for a week straight, the one with the sexy bubinga inlays. My lovely Larrivee.

nice dude. that's some blues right there.
>>
>>62560306
i don't think so. but once i bought that preamp and got it dialed in, i haven't touched it unless i'm turning it on.
>>
>>62560368
it's solid state, and a little banged up, it's a 90's model and has seen some shit, but play just fine.
>>
>>62560233
you didn't read my post son. If you want to understand a musical style you have to understand the songs. Not just play them, understand them. Case studies are the best tool you have for understanding a genre or style. Contrary to YouTube belief, learning the blues scale won't teach you how to write blues.
>>
>>62560429
Oh wait, is it the 450H? Ok, that price seems about right then, you should specify though, when someone says SVT, they usually mean the SVT CL. A 450 is only SVT in appearance. Not a bad amp, I've played a few and knew someone who gigged with one who had a decent tone, but not really on par with most of the other Ampeg stuff. I know all about getting a 90s SVT all banged up though, I spent a grand in damage repair to my CL, thing is gonna finally be up and running again just in time for recording next week
>>
>>62560429
>I got an SVT
>solid state

Holy shit you don't mean the svt-350/450 do you? Because brand new and working those go for like $200 because no one fucking wants them.

I thought you meant an ACTUAL svt. Solid state SVT's sound absolutely nothing like an actual SVT.
>>
>>62560683
it's an SVT anon. It's Ampeg's failure in marketing, but maybe you should be specifying SVT CL instead.
>>
You're by no means incorrect, but as far as advice goes for somebody that "only (knows) the minor pentatonic and blues scale", and doesn't know the notes on his fretboard, going into a detailed case-study on a particular style by deconstructing compositional elements of songs in that genre is, put lightly, beyond him. Hence why I believe you're jumping the gun in recommending that wholesale without mentioning that he'll make incredibly little progress, if any, starting at that point and will only have to fumble about until he realizes that theory and understanding what the hell a composition even is and why it is is, in my opinion, more salient advice and of greater use. What your recommending is far beyond foundational skills, which sounds like what's up his alley considering his self-description.

>SVT
>not an SVT

it's way easier to find a SVT CL than the solid states and even then they don't sell for what >>62560694 said. even if they did, it's still lower grade SVT i can get the tone i want out of that requires minimal maintenance and will never require you consistently pay for and to replace the tubes so i'm okay with that.
>>
>>62561198
>consistently pay for and replace tubes

Spotted the person who's never owned a tube amplifier in his life.

svt-350/450s are literally B1R/B2R heads in the SVT housing.
>>
>>62561318

>tubes go out, you have to replace them

thats being consistent, i think you read that as constantly.

you're right, i've not owned a tube amplifier, but i'm exposed to them fairly often. and i know that tubes don't late forever baka gaijin
>>
Post your favorite brand of acoustic guitar strings and why. I want to try something new.
>>
>>62561198
No one is fighting with you, but specify which SVT, since an SVT 450H is discontinued and usually goes for extremely cheap for a reason: it's a bargain model that got replaced with better bargain models like the Portaflex line. No one is saying it's shit, but saying it's an SVT is kinda like calling a Squier a Fender, to make it seem better than it actually is. All that matters is that you like it but it does come across that you're trying to make it sound better than it is by leaving out the exact model part. Also >>62561318 is right, the only reason I have to replace the tubes in mine is because they're 20 years old. If $300 every 20 years sounds like alot to have a great sounding tube head in shape, that's a bit odd honestly
>>
>>62561405
Preamp tubes last somewhere in the realm of 10-15 years, power tubes about 7-8 depending on bias and frequency of use. And if you do have a tube go out, you simply replace the bad one, not the entire set like so many idiots do.

I know this has probably been asked here before but what do you guys think of the line 6 amplifi bluetooth amps as a fuck around amp? I've accepted that I'm too old and shitty to start playing gigs and get good at guitar, I kind of just want to mess around at the house.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Amplifi75

I don't know dick about effect pedals and I don't want to throw a shit ton of money on the things to take up space in my small ass apartment.

Are these things any good? I understand since the community created effects are on line 6's servers, when they decide to stop supporting it I'm probably fucked. Does anyone on /gg/ have one of these or got a chance to mess around with it? What are your impressions?

>>
>>62562413
I can't speak for the infinium models, I had one of the original non master models. It was shaking pictures off walls through an ampeg 810 and didn't break up easily. Sounded pretty damn good.
>>
>>62562668
The modded in master didn't sound as good at low volume as other ppimv amps but it could take the edge off of having to go huge for breakup.

>>62562566

I really want to get into a band, but I have next to no band experience at 19, and have no friends. Is it too late? I feel like I'm too inexperienced to get into a band with people near my age but too old to get into a shitty 16yo metal band. I've been playing for about 6-7 years and I'm fairly solid as far as I can tell.

you didn't waste your money. That's good power and good frequency response. The only problem is lack of distortion. I have the B2, and if this is like mine and has the poweramp in and effects loop, it's great for that price. It just doesn't have any texture. Plus, it looks good, unlike my b2.

there's no way to figure that out from listening to a clip. I should say that the more interesting a delay effect is, the more likely it's digital.

zoom g3 has the preset sharing feature, it can't do quite as much as amplifi though. It being a stompbox, you need something to plug it into, but monitors work really well. It's got a looper and drum tracks, which is nice.

You can save money by buying non-fender pots/knobs/tuners. You're making a partscaster, so don't worry about going name brand. Also, get a new selector switch.

Get creative with the wiring scheme too. Make the thing yours. I wired mine as a broadcaster

I have a question, the area near my tendons (or something) hurt a bit, specifically mid upper arm, just under where, when you flex your wrist back, it makes a little dimple, pretty sure it's just the muscles actually, but would this be due to too much guitar or would it be more likely due to me doing handstands and cartwheels and stuff yesterday with my little sisters (they're both around 10 years old for the pedos that want to know)

Comedic elements on stage, yay or nay? We're usually kind of serious while we perform, but I had this idea that I would love to try out. We were talking about getting some fake/empty cabs because "muh stage presence", and I'd just love to have a mini fridge hidden inside of one of them. So between two songs, preferrably after something really heavy, I'd just go up to one of the cabs, open it up and grab a beer out of it while half-blocking the view with my body. I think it would be hilarious, bandmates thought that it could backfire. Opinions?

How does >>62571088 even remotely relate to "understanding showmanship"?

Nobody liked your shitty idea, get over it.

That sounds awesome, I doubt that we'll be able to pull off something like that but I really think that a joke or two are a nice change of pace after people have heard band after band and seen show after show of people being super serious.
>>62571002
I think it somehow even works for the more serious crowd in some way, it's literally poking fun at stage presence and ridiculous setups that are essentially just props, something that only real gearheads or people who go to a lot of shows would know about.
>>62571038
I'd definitely talk to them beforehand, a few things I had in mind include: faking a defect on one of the speakers or amps, going there to investigate looking all worried, then pulling out the beer from the cab to "fix" the problem and continue playing.

When you crank a transistor amp with a toroidal output transformer, it is going to sound a lot different than cranking an el34/6CA7 power section with a giant ass iron transformer. I'm not saying we don't have the technology to emulate it, it's just no one makes anything that actually will sound like it. Because then who would buy expensive tube amps anymore?

The real differences between the two become apparent at higher volumes. You know, something you'd realize if you ever left your bedroom.

>showmanship
Developing showmanship really is a must if you want to engage the audience into the show. The best shows I've seen have had a tremendous interaction with the audience. The worst show I ever saw was one where the guitarist took himself way too seriously and all he did was solo and shred at the most inappropriate timing for the whole fuckin' show. If it wasn't for my wife being there on some sort of holiday concert, I would have walked out.

>hurr people want to pay to hear me rehearse in front of my macbook
you're a shit musician with shit opinions, no three ways about it

>>62571268
you don't have to pull a comedy bit, just find some way to entertain. I can think of a dozen bands I'm never going to see again because they were lifeless bricks on stage. bands like AAL.

gotta give your audience something that youtube can't.

Very solid pick up m8. Remember to wipe down your strings after every use. it lets you go longer without restringings which is super for Floyd guitars
>>
>>62570920

We can basically emulate tube preamps perfectly, but we're still a long ways off from accurate emulation of tube power amp sections. There's a lot more going on there, like effects of P/OP transformer, rectification, class A vs AB harmonic content, response of different Output tubes etc...

Do you guys know if a $5 tuner is good enough for adjusting the intonation of my guitar or do I need something more precise? If so, any reccommandations?

St. Vincent Designed a Guitar for Women

>If you have a great instrument you're going to play better," Clark says. "You're going to play up to the level of the instrument because it makes it easier for you to succeed.

Is there anything this woman can't do?

You really need something with 1cent accuracy for that m8

>>62571968

Play a competent solo?

Do I need to grow my fingers out for fingerpicking? I kind of prefer the tone I get with my fingers rather than my nails.

>>62571968
So she's saying women need all the help they can get?
>>
>>62571225
Holy fuck that is beautiful
I want more shit like that, weird delays and reverbs, unorthodox modulation, whatever you guys know that's fucking strange.
>>
>>62571996
Just checked and my shitty tuner is actually +/- 1 cent.
