I don't think Blackstar can be topped. You can't deny that regardless of that the songs themselves are good, the fact Bowie turned his death into an art project and swan song is enough to make it AOTY. TLOP is pretty good as well. Haven't heard Painting With yet and idk what that other album is.

TLOP is Filler: The Album, it has GOAT moments and amazing songs (ULB, Wolves) but it isn't consistent. 6/10
Blackstar is great musically and the death theme is incredible. 9/10
Painting With is incredibly catchy and consistent, it's full of energy. 8.5/10
Dream Theater is... well.. eh. 4/10

Talking about them in /mu/ is like talking bringing up hip-hop in a rock talk. It's just not its thing. But as a fan, I was pleasently surprised by the new album. It's on par with a couple of their golden-era releases.

I like them too to a degree and I can't see how anyone would think that. There were a few specific moments, but it felt like repetition of old ideas rather than return to form. Like how the chorus from moment of betrayal sounds exactly like the great debate. There are a few more too. Generally my problem was that anytime they got some decent and distinct-sounding ideas going they'd always regress back into sounding samey and hypercompressed. A life left behind is a good example.
It's disappointing because they could be high-flying and video gamey and exciting but instead they're stuck retreading boring ideas. They added all this instrumentation but they didn't even use it well. It sounds like poor man's clint mansell and I don't even like him

While prog is a very self-serving genre and being self-serving isn't inherently bad, Dream Theater represent the worst of a genre already filled with self-indulgent expressionism. Dream Theater are not as fun as Gentle Giant or Genesis, are not as good songwriters as Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree, nor as adventurous as Can or King Crimson. The only thing this prog band really has going for them is their technical exhibitionism and histrionics. However, much like Rush, this is merely a front to hide just how ordinary and uninspired their music is much. While the members of Dream Theater are more than capable of playing, the ability to play something worthwhile is a trait that is lost on the group. And it is this that makes Dream Theater experienced, yet so amateur.
