The Grateful Dead sucks. Soulless noodling with no heart.

I've heard plenty. It makes me feel nothing but boredom. It has no heart. Maybe they should go see the Wizard of Oz.
>>
>>62546020
And this is why the Dead are never taken seriously. The scene that surrounds them blocks people's view of the music.
>>
>>62546076
They aren't taken seriously because their music is lame.
>>
>>62546044
Have you heard Garcia's first solo album. I think it's the best studio thing he ever did.

His guitar tone annoys the fuck out of me. Almost as much as his voice. He's a hack.

The real question is, when are Swans and Godspeed going to tour together? Gira has already said that he's a fan and Godspeed take more influence from Swans than any other recording act around today.
>>
>>62545750
true
>>
>>62547390
All three experiment with long form songs with some kind of improvisation.

Trey is actually a great guitar player with god tier music taste.

Dude...what? Are you serious? Is this b8?
Stylistically, krautrock has absolutely nothing to do with first and second wave post-rock. It's not a subject for debate, it's objective fact. You can't relate them because you're a sperg and can't sit the fuck still for a 10-30 minute piece.

If the length is somehow an identifiable characteristic in any of the above projects, you don't like music as much as you think you do.

There's nothing explicitly musical about long form songwriting.
>>
>>62547509
Swans tour this year is going to be their last, so if not now, than never.
>>
>>62547865
that is often the case desu

that being said it is generally not the case w/ the Dead
>>
If there's anything that puts me off Grateful Dead it's how they advocate this bohemian/freespirit lifestyle, but actually they sell every aspect of their band. They have a fuck ton of merchandise and tickets to their shows are like $100+ I mean t-shirts are one thing, but they literally put those bears on fucking everything and sell it.

Yeah, I'm aware. Gira said he'll continue recording under the Swans name and collaborating with friends on forthcoming projects, but without a stable lineup I don't think any substantial touring will be possible.
>tfw he'll be dead soon
>>
>>62547940
I was searching for Swans tour, http://www.bandsintown.com/Swans?came_from=174
Is this only Gira or the whole band
>>
>>62547909
Swans are heavily influenced by Can, at times straight up copying them. If any of those three should be pointed out it's Godspeed as they're an extremely structured band that happens to have long songs. Can and Swans extend and jam on rock songs in a similar manner to the Dead.
>>
>>62548014
It was actually not them selling any merch, it was the fans who sold tshirts to pay to go to other concerts
>>
>>62548054
That old ass nigga better come to british coloumbia
>>
>>62547909

>>
>>62548062
Those are Gira solo dates. Swans is putting out their "last" album at some point this year and will tour on that as a full band for, again, the "last" time.
>>
>>62547830
Wut? His playing is really underrated. He has great rhythm and a unique choice of inversions. He was heavily influenced by McCoy Tyner.
>>
>>62547830
You're dead wrong shit eater. Weir is the GOAT rhythm player.
>>
>>62547909
>>62548082
I guess my point is people listen to those 3 bands, all of whom play long songs, but refuse to listen to the Dead

Do you have any idea how fucking stupid you sound right now? Music is not comparable to other music because it's challenging for your short attention span.
>>
>>62548082
>Swans are heavily influenced by Can
Why aren't they good then?
>>
>>62545674

the dead are fucking great, and are honestly criminally underrated. what people like >>62546020 don't understand is that there were dozens of druggy bands playing in the 60s, but the Dead became as big as they were because of their incredible songwriting. The combination of Garcia and Hunter produced some of the most beautiful, creative, and soulful american music ever recorded. They were masters of so many genres, from bluegrass and americana to mind melting psych

quite a few modern bands list them as an influence, just check out the tribute album that's being released later this year featuring Fucked Up, Ira Kaplan, Lee Ranaldo, and Stephen Malkmus.

the Dead are definitely a filter for true patricians. they do have an insufferable fanbase and a lot of filler material and shitty years, but they also have some fucking gold in their discography.

If anyone wants to try to get into them, I suggest starting with Europe '72, Live Dead, or American Beauty.

I happen to like both The Grateful Dead AND Can! Father Cannot Yell is right up there with the likes of the Live/Dead version of Dark Star imho! And I also listen to a lot of crust and D-Beat along with Oi! and UK82 streetpunk! Debate me!
>>
>>62549196
I expect an influx in Dead talk once that 5 hour tribute comes out. P4k score?
>>
>>62548054
>>62547940

Swans has always changed lineups every few years. This is just the beginning of the next incarnation of it
>>
>>62545674
Swans and Can have good jams, GYBE is overblown style of substance and I'm not fond of it, but there's a cinematic quality to it that I can understand appeals to many. the grateful dead is just mindless weed OST shite though. it's the Oasis of jam bands. Phish does it better, and that's saying something.
>>
>>62552346
No actually, Gira himself has said that this is will be the final Swans album with a stable lineup. Stop talking out of your ass.

>>
>>62552432
Wait, what? Phish and the Dead are apples and oranges. You have to be a plen to compare them.
Also
>implying the songwriting team of Hunter/Garcia isn't one of the great teams
>>
>>62554316
>comparing two jam bands is "apples and oranges"
>plen meme

you're embarrassing yourself anon
also
>aimless noodling in third rate folk rock songs
>great songwriting

l to the mao
>>
>>62547909
>Krautrock has absolutely nothing to do with first [...] wave post-rock.

What the fuck dude? Mark Hollis of Talk Talk has cited Can as his favorite band. Tortoise, Stereolab, Pram and Cul de Sac all used the motorik at some poiint.
>>
>>62554402
Now I know you're sporking me. Early Phish was a god tier prog band that jammed, but in terms of writing songs, they haven't been nearly as consistent as the Dead. A big part of that being Garcia's songwriting talent and Hunter's lyrics. Have you ever read the annotated Dead lyrics site? It's incredibly insightful into Hunter's writing.
>>
>>62554402
This, so, so much.
>aimless noodling in third rate folk rock songs
Yawn.
>>
>>62554559
>sporking

are you able to formulate even ONE coherent though without the use of wacky memes, anon?

And who the fuck cares about lyrics, especially in jam band music, the fuck. grow up.
>>
>>62554687
Exactly, that what set the Dead apart from other jam groups. They focused on the songs first and than jammed around them unlike 80% of the jam bands today
>>
>>62554772
But the songs are all terribad.
>>
>>62554579
What do you think of this?

>>62556220
>>Is literally the greatest rhythm player in the history of rock music
really man? i mean i love him as much as the next guy but obviously Keith Richards is the best
>>
>>62558336
if you like psych: Anthem Of The Sun
if you like folk/country: Workingman's Dead
>>
>>62558439
Richards was a great songwriter, but an average rhythm player.
>>
A self confessing hippie the ded are boring. I get they pioneered... well nothing really except the scene.
Now there are 10x better jam bands doing it.
When the Dead tribute band (Darkstar Orchestra) draws bigger crowds than the remaining members and does the shit better, you know they were shit.
>>
>>62560242
>He listens to tribute bands
>>
>>62556220
Even in that scene there are 10x better players
Keller Williams
Bill Nirshi
Dave Matthews
John Bell
and of course Trey "the fucking rock God" Anastasio
>>
>>62560332
>doesn't understand he said rhythm player

>>62560242
>Now there are 10x better jam bands doing it.
kek
>>
>>62560685
name one of those guitarists who isn't a better rhythm player. The only one who isn't an out an out rhythm player is Trey and he's still a better rhythm player.
>>
>>62560802
Trey's a great guitar player, but doesn't do a whole lot of rhythm work. Keller is great too, but he's also more of a lead player. Nirshi, Matthews, and Bell are unmemorable players who just play the chords and don't do anything interesting in terms of chord changes during jams.
