anyone ever listen to celibadache's bruckner cycle? wicked slow tempi, yet sustained momentum. really extreme yet fitting rendition of bruckner's cathedrals of sound.

I don't know how anyone can listen to Celi Bruckner. I appreciate the 'cathedral of sound' stuff but it just sounds ridiculous if you've ever listened to almost any other Bruckner recording before.

I can't get more than 10 seconds into the Te Deum without laughing because it sounds absurd

>>
>>62529984
he has some recordings that were released on DG that are far more reasonable, and there are even some movements where he takes faster-than-norm tempo

for example, much of the scherzi on those recordings are faster than norm. late celibidache is still interesting for the balancing choices that he makes, which i always find unique, but other than that i personally don't get much out of it.

you can listen to his earlier recordings though and still get those interesting balances but without the absurdly slow tempi.

>>
>>62530056

What should I listen to instead?
>>
>>62530092
the only reason i feel it "works" is because its literally just chords and intervals of harmony at those tempi, and you're just listening to the beauty of instruments rather than what bruckner envisioned

>>62530177
those were his younger years basically. same shit happened with gould and pogorelich where they obsessed over particular aspects of the music as they got older

yeah i have karajan's cycle as well, and enjoy both for what they are. i'll take karajan for the 4th, easily.

i find that the adagios in particular are incredible with his skillfully slow tempo, at moments becoming so atmospheric and ambient-like. if one is into that then it can such an experience.

Favorites chorales include: 639(Solaris theme), 684, 645, 669 I rate 540 over 565 when it comes to the Toccata and Fugues, it is probably my favorite work. Some others favorites: Prelude and Fugue 532; Passacaglia and Fugue 582; Toccata, Adagio & Fuga 564
>>
>>62538978
He's a bit slow himself. Try Rogner if you're talking about stereo recordings. Petre too, I guess? Though I don't think he is as fast as Rogner. When it comes to mono recordings though, just about everyone played him significantly faster than what is played today. On average, at least.

>those droll winds on those Czech/Matacic recordings
>>62541051
kubelik is really one of the more versatile and tasteful conductors, in my view
>>
>>62541051
truth be told i dont love kubelik in the 4th but his recordings of it with the vpo and brso are absolutely fine to me with very great playing, as opposed to klemps whose conception of the piece i like but didnt have the best recording take with the philharmonia orchestra in stereo. (better served from his mono recordings with vso and koln)
>>
>>62542028
My favorite 4th is pretty much Andreae, very good mono, fast but also a lot more flexible than VSO/Cologne Klemperer
>>
where to start with britten?
>>
>>62542181
War Requiem, maybe.
>>
>>62542173
if we're talking about favorites of all bruckner 4ths i'd have to put kabasta on top of my list. but actually one of the reasons why i really like klemps 4ths is the inflexibility of the phrases, almost a overserious, military feel to the rhythms.
>>
>>62542367
That's what I really like about those recordings though, with VSO>Cologne>PO as the order of preference
>>
>>62542407
theres also a concertgebouw recording from 1947

Violin Concerto

>Song cycle stuff

Serenade
Nocturne
Holy Sonnets of John Donne

>Choral
War Requiem (Britten's finest piece, do a bit of reading about it before listening to get a sense of what he's doing)
Hymn to the Virgin
A.M.D.G
A Ceremony of Carols
A Hymn to St. Cecilia
Rejoice in the Lamb

>Chamber
Lachrymae
Cello Sonata+Suites

>>

The Britten-conducted one with Vishnevskaya, Pears and Fischer-Dieskau is pretty authoritative (since it's him conducting the three soloists he wrote the music for) but also worth checking out is the CBSO/Nelsons DVD recording from 2012 in Coventry Cathedral, a 50th anniversary performance of the premiere in the same setting and played by the 'same' orchestra who did it in 1962.

Otherwise the 2011 LSO/Noseda is pretty popular, although it's not my favourite. I think there's a more recent one with Pappano and Orchestra di Santa Cecilia with a pretty all-star soloist line-up, but I've not heard it so can't comment.

I've also got a recording of the CBSO/Nelsons performance from the Proms a couple of years ago which is mainly for sentimental reasons since I was singing in the choir.

Doing Schroeder's cello studies.

What exactly do these sort of downward-facing brackets above certain groups of notes mean? I've been told that they usually refer to playing on a single string, and for some studies that does seem to work fine, but for others playing the notes under the bracket on only one string would be nonsensical.
>>
>this Scherchen Messiah

What the fuck is happening with this tempi.

It goes between slow as death and shit like 'And He Shall Purify' being taken at about double-speed from anything I've heard before.

>>
>>62545805

It's a really interesting recording so far. 'He Was Despised' is 15 minutes long... and apparently the final Amen fugue is roughly 3 times longer than most other recordings.

But then you have (as I said) 'And He Shall Purify' going at an incredible pace, and even more impressive is that the choir is hitting it with remarkable accuracy given the speed. Violins sound pretty shit, but the rest of the orchestra are putting out a nice sound. Tenor soloist is incredible, alto soloist is pretty good, soprano is ok and bass is shit.

It's just such a mismatch of really good, really bad and really strange
