What's up /noise/. I designed a new instrument recently and wanted to share about it here.

The second half of the vid has some noise and doom metal-like sounds.
Hope you dig it.

I normally use the Cathedral and Cool Cat for drones or walls, reverse setting on the Digidelay for really choppy and cut up sounding loops with tapes or a contact mic, then the bottom four as a feedback loop

I've got a Digitech Synth Wah too, but it always ends up sounding really distinctive so I don't use it a lot unless it's first in a feedback loop or something

It's been working real real well for me - turning the reverb time all the way up locks in some really nice drones, plus if you've got a really loud input you can easily take it into wall territory, even more so with the EQ on the end

Depends. You can approach noise:
from rock via noise rock (if you like Sonic Youth for instance, try The Dead C — there are plenty of other paths you could take, like Soundtracks for the Blind if you grow to enjoy the drone and collage parts),
from industrial (if you like NON and Throbbing Gristle you're already halfway there),
industrial metal via death industrial (e.g. Pharmakon, Brighter Death Now),
from EDM via industrial techno (British Murder Boys, Trade) or electro-industrial and power electronics (Prurient can get you all the way from EBM to noise),
from ambient via fuzzy ambient and "soft noise" like Yellow Swans or drone (e.g. Imperial Distortion),
from field recordings (many of them are definitely noisy/aggressive enough),
from metal maybe via black metal (or Metal Music Machine by Jazkamer, it's death metal x noise)
even from jazz via Machine Gun, Gyatso by 16-17, etc.

... Basically take any genre and find the more abstract and entropic examples (not necessarily the most aggressive ones, if you still have classic structures with rhythms and melodies you're not as close as you may think). You'll get to noise soon enough.

>>62532975
I don't know, I find that /noise/ threads are usually good.

i got into noise by trying to make it myself, which came from a desire to just make the most extreme, loud, cathartic sounds I could with my PC. this gave me an appreciation for how noise artists were coming up with their shit, and what they were doing that was different to me.
>>
>>62539918
honestly if you're looking to get into noise, Merzbow isn't really THE noise artist like most of /mu/ thinks him to be

starts off dreamy, reminds me of Iamlakeofburningorchids not cause of everything but cause it has the vibe of hipster-noise, like with that burnout atmosphericks and freeflowing melodies. I really like how you utilise beats in here, not the boring repettive kind, but free flowing. Tho it kinda goes for that one texture for too long, like I am bored by 2:27. Also that change, you know, dropping all the burnout is unfitting i think. Also it has clear ending which is good cause some tracks posted in here don't have even that

Would you guys be interested if I started dumping pics of my set-up/gear ? I have a bunch of shit (pedals, tape players, homemade instruments) that I normally leave sleeping in the closet, but I feel like sharing today.
>>
>>62546965
Do it!
>>
>>62547734
Alright. First is my current set-up, part 1. It's fairly small compared to what I used to have before. The goal was to have all the electronics inside a pedal-board, the 2/3 being taken by the tape player. It's a 4-track player with the erase head unplugged. I use it with blank tape loops, so this way the sounds get overdubbed over and over. The pedal on the left are used to process both the input signal from various instruments AND the send signal from the tape player, meaning this can create some nasty feedback and crumbling tape echo. The homemade boxes are passive mixers used to dispatch the various signal. The small tape player on the left can be used as an external sound source, or share the tape loop with the 4-track.

Feel free to ask any question.
>>
Part 2 of my current set-up. I have already posted a couple times my caveman instruments, with strings and springs. These instruments are made with an aluminium (good resonance) and have a contact mic affixed to it with on/off switch.

What's new is the small cymbal with the spring lodged in its hole. This is an awesome noise maker, because you can bow or hit the spring and have resonate with the cymbal. I have tried this with a huge 24" ride and it gave great result. All the droning of a cymbal without the percussive aspect.

Bottom is the box of tape loops.

god yes. it's probably my favourite recording of his ever

also it was a totally live recording from a show, no editing at all!

i play in a noisy artpunk band. This is every song from last week's gig recorded on a shoebox recorder and played at once. it sounds neat.

I was asked to do a full-on noise set tomorrow night with some guys that we get booked with a lot. I have a couple of shoebox recorders that i've been getting a lot of field noise and stuff on for a few days. Gonna take my shitty two-input mixer, run the field recording tapes into one channel and no input the other channel by splitting the output of the mixer and running one line to my guitar amp and one line back into input 1.

i'll have a bunch of shitty danelectro pedals and some homemade clones on the no-input chain. i have no idea how to make "real noise" but whatevs, these artpunk people will pretend to like anything.

So what do you hook the pedals up to to produce the tone? A microphone?
>>
>>62550594

some people use noise makers, like simple synthesizers and whatnot, some people just run the output from a mixer back into its input so that it makes a feedback loop, some folks use an array of pre-recorded sounds on tapes or records or whatever that they manipulate.
>>
>>62550793

i have 9volt batteries with pennies taped to them that fit perfectly on my keyboard keys, so i'll hold down a chord with the weights and then use pedals and eq to get weird.

What should I do if I want to get more into noise?
Not producing, just finding good ones to listen to.
>>
what sort of shows do you guys see more of an audience at? i've done dedicated noise shows where it was just the artists and our friends, and i was invited to do an art party at a big party house that was ok but most people ended up leaving (whatevs, it's noise y'know), but now i've been playing drums and doing most of the writing for a reeeeaalllly noisy shoegaze band- but there's still discernible rhythm and structure to the songs.

anyway, tl;dr
i'm supposed to play a full-on noise gig at an actual art show with actual artists and do you think i should just have my shoegaze band bring extra pedals and crank it to 11? i don't want to ruin these people's art exhibit lol..

Whatever you do for finding other similar artists in different genres should work for noise.

Click on Spotify related artists, look at last.fm recommendations, make a thread on /mu/, hell even reddit has come through with decent suggestions for me now and then.
>>
>>62554255
Yes, I seem to have trouble finding decent noise.

Maybe I could look into Deathpile a bit more; his GR release is one of my favourite albums of all time.
>>
>>62554198

the guy that booked me said, "you know- do the noise thing. whatever, do whatever you want."

i haven't done a noise show in probably a year. i think i'm just gonna bring my rig and have my band play really loud and whatnot, and loosen up the structure some, and just do our normal songs with noise for rhythm. i can get something going pretty easily.

i'd really like to just do a full-on face rape noise set but these are gonna be people in coats and gowns looking at statues and shit. i feel like everyone involved would probably like to keep a few patrons around. idunno. first world problems.

oh yeah, noise set is about 15 minutes, typically, band can do as long as we're told pretty much.
>>

What do people think of Kevin Drumm's new releases? Bout' to give this a listen.

Controlled Bleeding's Knees and Bones took my noise virginity. It might work for you too.
>>
How does /noise/ feel about rhythmic noise? I can't help but feel like a hack if my noise doesn't have at least SOME rhythm to it.
>>
>>62556621
I think you can inevitably pick up rhythm in a lot of noise anyway. As long as it doesn't end up sounding just like breakcore or something then I think it's fine.
>>
>>62556770
I feel you. It's just... I don't know how to explain it, I guess. I like zoning out to drones when I'm in the mood, and even noise walls as long as they aren't piercing. But when it boils down to making noise, I like just layering tracks over and over, effecting them as they go, but a lot of it is done on the fly (dropping tracks in and out, increasing/decreasing effects, etc.), but at the end of the day I almost feel bad because little is done with predetermined intention. And even though I set out to make abstract noise I have such a deep seeded love of hip hop beat music and groovy riffs from funk, metal, and rock I feel like if I'm not making anything worthwhile if I can't bob my head to it.

TLDR I'm drunk and having a musical existential artistic crisis

Do you guys have ANY release by this projects by any chance? I'll be really, really interested in listening to these.

Please, it may be some really interesting find, all of the above made power electronics in the 80s, and are super obscure.

Agreed.
I like that kind of rhythm just seems to come naturally from the frequencies playing with each other, rather than some drum machine or something laying the foundation.
Some of the best reactions to noise I've seen at shows is when the sound kinda reaches that ebb and flow heartbeat pulse and everybody kinda slow-mo headbangs to it.
It sure beats when everybody kneels down and bow their heads during HNW sets while the performer just sets his pedals and then stands back, crosses his arms and/or takes sips from his beer.

Yeah I get what you mean about predetermined intention. Personally I like a lack of intention, because I find it difficult to piece together coherent structures. It can take a while before you can find a happy medium really, as long as you're comfortable showcasing what you've made.

If you think about it, having no predetermined intention is in itself an intention.

This is exactly what I'm striving for, homie - something akin to, like you said, a heartbeat. Like being in a womb as blowhard as that sounds. A natural beat that's being ingrained in us since conception. And you're totally spot on about the wall sets that are (in my eyes) no different than the stereotype of a shitty DJ hitting play on his laptop. I strive for a groove that's almost invisible if that makes any sense.

>I find it difficult to piece together coherent structures.
Yeah, I'm struggling to find a balance between something that's different than chorus-verse-chorus-chorus yada yada and a bullshit smathering of sound. I come from a visual art background (film and later to painting) and, again forgive me if I sound like an asshole, would like to make stuff that is an audio equivalent to a Richter or Rothko painting. Like, loose splotchy colors and lines that still have a colorful and pleasing aspect to them. Bold and open to interpretation but still have something tangible rather than a random mishmash of strokes and splatters. A Pollack instead of a blank canvas with a slash through it or a can of shit that is supposed to be deep only because I said it's supposed to be.

I come from a vis art background too, so I can definitely see what you're trying to achieve.

While I haven't used them, tape loops can certainly be your friend. Cassettes in general even. Get a contact mic too, and try to pick up sounds off of your surroundings. Collage them all together. Interplay between mediums I've found is key to making worthwhile noise. It would be very difficult to come up with something that hasn't already been done, interesting sounding noise is what I strive for.

Take a listen through some of my stuff if you'd like

As soon as I wrote that comment I was thinking though. I mean, I was kind poking fun. I think I understand what goes into doing HNW, and it doesn't exactly translate to a thrilling visual/physical performance from the artist, but you can appreciate the amplitude and physicality of the sound itself, so.
You ever hear of Hard.? It's a side-project, but they parody that kind of stand-there-do-nothing HNW thing:

About freeing up the creative process. I feel the same I think. I think we've moved past the "Fuck compose, Fuck melody, ART IS OVER yadda yadda yadda" anti-art statements, but free improvisation for me is the most honest expression for sound/music.
I agree with >>62559116 about amassing a variety of sources and "painting" with them that way. Definitely the classic contact mic. Mic your table, your wall, mic your cup of coffee or even try to get your own heartbeat??!

Damn, I wanna hook my gear and record and I have to go to bed in like 20 minutes...

Cover yourself in contact mics, and record your sleep

Listening now. Very cool. Kind of reminds me a bit of some noise project called Dust Hag that I saw posted on here but... better lol. Did you use a mbira?

>>62559116

How can I make good contact mics and tape loops? Any noise tutorials out there or something?

Yeah that's a mbira. I've been meaning to check out Dust Hag, might as well go do that now.

>>62559594
There's plenty of tutorials on how to make loops. I suggest looking at an artist called Amulets, he posts on r/cassetteculture quite often.

>>62537003
Also from 20th century classical and musique concrete stuff through junk noise like early merzbow or kk null (that's what I did)

Lol that's great
