There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

Best freeware synth out there? I'm having a blast with synth1 but I need something to do additive synthesis.

Also, what's a good free reverse reverb and delay VST?

idk if there are any good additive plugins. dexed is decent on voice structure 32.

Alright time to go back to operators and stuff, the last FM plugin I used was Sytrus
>>
>>62492189
Can't really say anything regarding additive synths but I know that u-he do some good free synths.

Anyway, here's my current wip, just gotta master it a little bit more and EQ the violins:

heres a little beat been working on that i posted yesterday, tried tweaking it a little and in general a bit happier with the mix but if anoyone has any further suggestions on how to improve the mix (or anything really) itd be massively appreciated!

>>62494063
dont really listen to this type of music so not really sure on what to say but that main bass synth seems just slightly too loud, and the drums get slightly overpowered as a result. thats just for me though. overall it seems pretty well produced would just agree that those strings need some tweaking in the intro, they sound a little tacky, maybe use a different string synth/sample?

but yeh overall sounds like with just a few tweaks could sound crisp!

>>62494063
overall sounds pretty good, like the spacey atmospheric synthstuff. i think the drums in general as well as the bass could be a little punchier, try using parallel compression on the kick snare/clap and bass etc and they should pop a little more. also maybe some sidechaining to the kick?

overall think that beats got some potential to be pretty nice tho! good work
>>
>>62500531
Really enjoyed it. Something about the sound that makes me think of the clothing that covers billiard tables. The dampened sound of the kick and piano maybe. I didn't buy you first chord change. It sounded like you had given up before it started. It's not a big thing, since I stopped noticing as I got more into it, but maybe the first chord change could be bolder. Anyways, had a good time. Would listen again.

>>62501393

anyone know any rave/jungle/oldskool hardcore related VSTs similar to this?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69G2NlGyh9g

perhaps something of a little higher quality
>>
>>62494195

The only thing I'd say that I'd do differently here is that I'd have the bass following the root notes rather than following the top line as it does right now, it could be what is unsettling you with the pitch of the bass.

With the general tone of the bass I'd allow a little more harmonic content to come through, if you're low-passing it right now raise the cutoff a little and perhaps then you'd be able to also shelf off a little of the very bottom end if you think it's muddying up, I don't hear a major issue with it as it stands though, it just lacks definition in the lower midrange and less low-pass would let you hear it better and more usefully guide your decisions.
>>
>>62501680

There's a good Alpha Juno/MKS-50 VST called ReDominator from AudioRealism that does the hoover sound pretty well
>>
Is the delay plugin izotope is offering worth the download? I have so many already.

>>
Here's something I've been working on for a while now. Have been listening for too long in one go so I figured I'd give my ears a rest and see what other people think. The low end sounds kinda off, so I'm thinking bring down the bass a little.

Octatrack or Machinedrum UW?
>>
Check this out if you like Deaf Grapes https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCz8x3TcpIweB2mgvnQPRFGA
>>
>>62505832
No man, let your inspiration flow. Well first of all you're gonna need samples, lots and lots of samples, for royalty free samples go over to Loopmasters and use keywords to find samplepacks. But these types of producers also sample a lot of old songs and whatever random shit they find on youtube. As for VSTs, well, Sylenth1 is a must, mayyyyybe Serum, also all the Image-Line and Fab-Filter plugins are top notch. And ArtsAcoustic reverb. From then on, just keep expanding.
>>
>>62505842
Kinda apples to oranges. The Octatrack is a deep 8 track sampler/sequencer, the Machinedrum is a drum machine with sampling sampling capability.
>>
>>62505564
Overly produced EDM tracks. Whatever. Same scene, same people, same music, different name
>>
>>62505989

the Octatrack has incredible capabilities but only 2 Outs and its expesive as fuck

the UW has more limited sampling abilities, but 8 out IIRC and a lot cheaper

mmmmmmm......
>>
>>62505935
Thanks alot man, I appreciate it. I'll definitely look em up. I feel like they don't credit the originators as much as they should, but Idk how I'd go about doing that while also sticking to my own flow. Once again thanks.
>>
>>62506215
Damn, I didn't even know that the octratrack only had 2 outs. Why does it have 4 ins, but only 2 outs?
>>
>>62506192
No, I'll admit there's a cheese factor, as with everything, but if you're not seeing beyond that and you think everything that can be danced to besides decade old UK grime/dub or Kraftwerk then you're really close minded.

>>62506225
They don't. That's part of the art, using and "molding" if you will, kickass samples that nobody can ever trace back to the originator. It's all part of the scene and art. But there's limitless ways to edit a sample and fuck around with it so that it becomes your own thing in the end, so it doesn't really limit your creative input, if anything, it expands it and helps your flow.

Should I vary the velocity when making electronic music?

Say I have a kick drum and I'm making eurobeat (don't ask). I've exported project midi from my score-writer to my DAW, and I see my score-writer took the time to vary the velocities of the kick according the place it hits in the bar (kick on the first beat in a bar has the highest velocity, the others less so to varying degrees etc). Will this subtle "humanizing" variation add to the music or will it feel uncanny valley-ish in a genre that relies heavily on samples?

Also, regardless of what I like myself, what is convention in electronic styles?
>>
>>62512604

A harder kick on the first beat causes issues if you're using any kind of compression in that it'll cause energy to drop slightly - this will be real noticeable on passages where you need an impact to be made.

It's not a problem with incidental percussion but with Euro it relies on kicks and, to an extent, snares too for energy to be pretty constant in the main passages.

i have an interface with 4 outs and i was thinking about adding a sub to go with my monitors.

would i just go into the settings and enable the 3rd and 4th output to play the same thing as the 1st and 2nd and hook the sub up like that?

The sub I use (Yamaha HS8S) has stereo inputs and outputs so the signal from my interface goes there first, is filtered for the sub and for the main speakers by the sub's crossover and then the outputs from the sub go to the main speakers - most modern subs work this way.
>>
>>62513690

it does have a crossover and inputs/outputs actually so i guess i'm good and i'll still have my other 2 outs for effects and stuff... cool

HS-7s and I only use a little of the sub for fill as I have a small room - it'll work well with HS-5s too.

I just composed this song. I'm only posting this here because OP said discuss general music composition.

The roads piano was a simple melody I composed last night at a granola bar party. I like how it pivots on the A#, a note shared by both the F# and D# triads, the major 3rd and perfect 5th respectively. Then it extends out to the C# and G, which are tritones, and the perfect 5th and major 3rd respectively.

The tenor saxophone is inspired by Frederic Chopin's opus 10 no. 5. Just a carefully linked F# and D# pentatonic scale.

The drums are inspired by Chris "Daddy" Dave. Just basic golden ratio subdivisions.

One could say it could use some layering of other instruments and effects, but that's all for the imagination. The Chopin arpeggios are fun to improvise over, and if you wanted, you could play the piano parts with the left hand and improvise over that with the right as a solo act. The drums would be improvised as well in a live performance.

I'm taking the advice from a friend of mine. He works about 20 hours a week at a car detailer, but spends the rest of his time animating and creating art, which really is the way to go about it. He's not earning a lot of money, but it's enough to sustain an average quality of life. If you just come home and hone your skills eventually it will lead to an opportunity, as long as you keep at it. The key is not to get wrapped up and distracted by work

The single notes sound like they've been detuned, the string sounds like it's very slack or it could be that it's been played a lot quicker with a regularly-pitched string and then pitched down with a sampler (Gabriel had just got access to one of the first Fairlights at that point) or using tape techniques.

Any advice on ordering gear from eBay? Good idea? What should I look out for?
