Recently rediscovered Meet the residents. It may not be the best starting point, but approached correctly it's an enjoyable and very funny album.
Through the hardships of the first listens, of the deconstruction and of the sheer abrasivity, I'm starting to honestly appreciate it in a less humoristic approach.

They can be surprinsingly ''sweet and sour'', as in Infant Tango or Seasonned Greetings, where you find yourself surprised to feel something from such ''ugly'' music, which should only repulse.
>>
>>62430857
What *is* the best starting point? Eskimo?
>>
>>62430851
read The Theory of Obscurity i guess

no

trout mask replica
faust
tubular bells
the end of an ear

those are the main rock albums that clearly influenced the residents' music

then, brian eno i guess

meet the residents was my first residents album and to this day remains my favorite of theirs
>>
>>62430888

Personally, Duck Stab/Buster and Glen was a breakthrough in my appreciation of The Residents.
Not as stricly deconstructed as Meet or Third Reich and Roll, less ambient than Eskimo and different from their story-centered album. In my opinion, it best represents the different sounds or directions of their discography.
I find it extremely funny, deconstructed and surprisingly catchy.
Still consider it my favorite, though I have yet to fully explore Not Available.

>>
>>62425990
duck stab isn't that good, Fingerprince is better with a similar aesthetic and concept. Gi3P should be towards the top, as should Demons. Wormwood and third reich should be in "the rest"
>>
>>62430821
my dad showed me this in like third grade and I didn't know the cultural significance of having hitler at the end and I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever seen.

Here's a challenge for anyone who considers them a fan of the Residents--name one happy song by them. I honestly can't think of one that doesn't have a creepy undertone to it.

Just listened to Eskimo again. On the final few minutes now. Its so beautiful.

the bit at the two minute mark is like the peak of their music musically for me
>>
>>62437141
There are some liner notes that comes included with the album, it was probably a reference to how modern civilization came to the Eskimos.
Ultimately losing a bit of their culture and way of life, drinking cola and watching tv instead.
>>
>>62437141
just a statement on commercialism vs primalism

only the last two minutes of eskimo and the remix album are happy sounding?

They're doing a show in New Haven and it's a 45 minute drive from where I am. Also my dad's out of town.
I really, really need to get my driver's license.
>>
>>62430888
If you can find it, I would reccomend The Residents Play The Beatles Play The Residents, and immediately follow that with their version of Satisfaction, and the album Third Reich and Roll, and then ease yourself into them with Duck Stab/Buster and Glen. After that you'll be ready to tackle the more adventurous stuff.
>>
>>62441869
Uhhh Amber?? hello?
>>
>>62448934
that's a pretty creepy song, pal
>>
>>62449393
Except there is a happy vibe there.
>>
>>62449442
plenty of their songs have happy vibe but they're all creepy! I'm talking straight up happy residents song--with lyrics--they don't exist
>>
>>62449593
The creepiness of The Residents is really just a harmless side effect of their weirdness honestly.
>>
>>62449783
no argument here, their creepiness is what I like so much about them. I just legit don't think they have a single happy-non-creepy song.
>>
>>62430851
>70s into 80s output
subverted pop music

>beyond that
surrealist storytelling
>>
>>62430888
For me, Eskimo was actually what was the easiest thing for me to appreciate initially. You could possibly start with Not Available, it's actually pretty accessible as far as Residents go, but you might appreciate it more if you've heard Meet the Residents first.
>>
>>62450333
I personally started with The Commercial Album.Took me a while to Finish it, but it got me into them.
>>
>>62448934
I listened to that song for 2 hours straight once
