That is a little low. Gretsch Catalina Maple is pretty like, the one in the OP is that set up, it was $695 a few years back for 7 shells, nice punch with Remo or Aquarian heads.
Maybe a Yamaha stage custom maple, less shells but great full sound for also about $700

Well the one I have now is a fender starcaster. It's got onyx heads on it, the only one that sucks is the floor tom, too boomy with anything except super high tuning. Should be alright with black metal if I record it with shitty mics. Problem with it is there's no real customization, the toms are built into the bass drum and cannot be configured to be comfortable to play, for anyone.

Just in case you don't know, top head controls tone, bottom head control resonance. So drop the bottom head, tune rope head to desired pitch (or thud)
