To me it seems that Ellington the pianist was always in the shadow of Ellington the bandleader, which is something I consider to be a great shame. I don't know who was the most "sophisticated" but Ellington was a fucking good pianist.

http://rutracker.org/forum/tracker.php?nm=jazz%202016

It has been ONE (one) month, one week and a couple of days.

There have been 244 jazz releases according to RuTracker. What have you listened to?

So far, I've listened to:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnC5d4oGOI0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRyKmWs2EoM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLpqP_JSLxw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnjPc-tw8Eo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F25_Zdt6kGw

Some of these might be good. Some of these might be absolute garbage. I'll probably upload the whole albums and post them in a sharethread (or here) someday. For now the above and more can be downloaded through RuTracker.
>>
>>62403707
Depends on what you consider 'sophisticated', i think.
My favorite might be thelonious for obvious reasons. He would hit two tones a semitone apart, to make it sound like the tone in between. He was really deep in it. His percussive technique could be seen as a bit crude, but at the same time it made for a very unique sound and noone in the world played piano like monk. A creative genius for sure, and his voicings are way out there, taking a piss on conventional ways of playing. Bill Evans really shines, imo, when he does the tonally ambiguous stuff typically associated with modal jazz. Harmonies in fourths etc. to float around tonality, not define it. Just as Monk a true master of his craft.

This. His solo Lotus Blossom on the Billy Strayhorn tribute is one of the most lyrical performances I've ever heard. It's a good composition in the first place and Duke captures his emotional response to the death of his friend really beautifully.

Let's discuss jazz appreciation. How long do you spend with a new album? How many albums do you become acquainted with per week? What's your method to become acquainted?

These days I'm trying to focus on one old, and one new album per week. I find it pretty useless to listen to a new album unless I'm entirely concentrated on it. So that's usually headphones lying in bed at the end of the evening.

Related question: Jazz appreciation resources?

Do you listen to modern jazz often? What would you recommend for someone who listens to just a few artists (Miles Davis, Coltrane, Bill Evans, Monk, Ellington, and Hermeto Pascoal)

There's so much it's overwhelming and I find it kinda hard getting out of my comfort zone with jazz.
>>
Has anyone listened to pic related? Have found it recently, and I'm really diggin it though I need to listen to it more often.
>>62410059
Usually, they don't. But we gotta keep discussin' here. Months ago, I thought (wrongly) that modern jazz was a bad idea, but how mistakenly was I. Post 60s jazz and modern jazz is brilliant.
>>62409220
Great mentions thus far:
>Frank Woeste - Pocket Rhapsody
>GoGo Penguin - Man Made Object
>Avishai Cohen - Into the Silence

Which ones did you like it?
>>
>>62411415
>How long do you spend with a new album?
If it's not that good, depending on how shit it is, I might not even waste time on a second listen. That doesn't happen often though because I'm quite good at spotting things I'll enjoy.
If I like it, it'll go into rotation and I'll listen to it as I feel like it. I don't really prescribe time but generally I like hearing things I'm not all that familiar with so new stuff get's listened to more anyway.
>How many albums do you become acquainted with per week? >What's your method to become acquainted?
I don't know what that means but I imagine like most things with music, you have to listen to it.

I'd say to you that you stick if fewer albums (both modern and classics) instead of searching new albums. I don't know your preferences, but maybe check Pat Metheny, Tomasz Stanko, Dave Holland, Avishai Cohen, Eberhard Weber, Lars Danielsson, etc. (ECM and ACT labels)
>>

>>
>>62409220
Haven't heard many from this year yet- only Avishai Cohen's, Ches Smith's, and Dr. Lonnie Smith's. Downloaded GoGo Penguin but haven't heard it yet.

>>62410394
I enjoyed this album a lot. I think it was in my top ten from last year. I'm surprised nobody else seemed to know about it. Ambrose Akinmusire is usually pretty popular.

>>62411415
When it comes to jazz, I think it's better to listen deep than to listen wide. In other words, it's better to find one great album and listen to it 10 times than to listen to 10 great albums only once. Usually on first listening to something new I get an idea of how much I want to relisten to it. If it gets a high priority I will usually give it 2-3 listens. Sometimes I listen to 4 or 5 new (to me) albums in a week and sometimes just one or even none. Just depends.

>>62412116
Epicenter was pretty good. I was expecting it to be better though

Did you ever get that big band ECM album? I've forgotten the name of it but that looked really interesting when you were talking about it a few weeks back.
>>
>>62412123
haha! I'm pretty new to jazz so it really takes a while for it to sink in. By method, I mean for example, focusing on one particular instrument with each listen, then another listen which encompasses all, etc.

What draws me to jazz is that I can't really understand/comprehend it and I see it as a challenge. I'm a physicist, and this is the attitude I took to physics - trying to understand things that from the outside look very abstract and complex, breaking it down and then seeing how it's put together. I also love death metal - at the beginning it was like wtf is this, but then once I listened deeply and acquired a taste for it, it has become my go to genre for 20 years now.
>>
>>62412562
>focusing on one particular instrument with each listen, then another listen which encompasses all
These can both be pretty rewarding ways of listening to music in general. There isn't really a technique or anything beyond that though. It's just a skill you can develop if you enjoy listening to music like that.
One thing I will say is that I've become a more attentive listener after doing the jazz blindfold threads for a while.
Funny enough I'm studying physics in college atm and I get the same buzz you're talking about and it definitely has an impact on what I look for in music too.

Does anyone have a decent chart for beginning with jazz? I've listened to a bunch of these classics such as Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme, yet I feel like I listen passively, if that makes sense - I just like the way the instruments sound, and I dont feel like I really engage with the actual music. Maybe I should find some albums that have less improvisation?

Look at Paul Chambers, looking so fly in the back there.

Also, I'm guessing you're not counting Miles' other work with Gil.
But if there's a good big band, it'll probably have a good trombone player. Sam Nanton's stuff with Duke is pretty fantastic but if you meant something more modern, try Buddy Rich

Yeah that was just an example.
Thanks by the way, will check this out. I really like largeness of big bands, but I don't like the focusedness of it. The improvisational aspect of small jazz ensembles, is what I'm going for, but on a larger scale, I think this is pretty fantastic what you posted here.

I'm actually pretty into Bossa Nova.

The problem I have with it, though, is a whole mess of it is basically "loung music". Which, don't get me wrong, I enjoy. But I feel like Bossa Nova also has at its disposal an ability to use for a real fucking great Latin rhythm, you know, jazz that gets you moving.

Actually, the how about the lineup on Search for the New Land! Lee, Hancock, Shorter, Green, Higgins. Yet I've never seen it discussed here before.
>>
>>62422758
Search for the New Land is another major classic Morgan album with Hancock, Wayne Shorter on sax, Grant Green on guitar, Reggie Workman on bass and Billy Higgins on drums

Then there is The Procrastinator with Hancock, Shorter, Bobby Hutcherson, Ron Carter and Higgins) - it was originally released as a posthumous double album with a different group on the second disc, but at least the modern day Spotify version has just the 6 tracks with that band

Also Standards features Hancock, but isn't that good IMHO.

Does there exist an archive of these? Soulseek is as usual a nightmare and I don't have enough buffer on my private trackers.

Let's all agree that Hank Mobley has a handful of awesome, energetic and beautiful hard bop albums? I feel like he's not mentioned here enough. Great leaderman

I'm pretty sure this could do, it's from 2012
>>62430430
I think I might try and put a mega folder of it sometime, if there isn't one already. A lot of those might be possible to find through the archive already though.

All of these released this year.. most of them are labeled avant-garde jazz by RYM. Is that true or not? Who knows?

Do you already know Wes montgomery or Grant Green? More modern, maybe Pat Metheny or Ralph Towner? I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but those are great guitarrists :)

Bossa Nova Just Smells Funky is cool too, but I prefer this one. Basically made for dancing.

I don't know if he's gonna release an album.
About the tracks:
The first track played was a track which progressively increased in aggressivity, sound volume but not rythm. Great for an intro.
The second one was a groovy, funky one.
I don't remember a lot of the third one, except a smooth piano solo.
The fourth one was my favourite. In the second part of the track, the drummer was like... stopping time. There are no other words to explain that. It was not a "I hit super fast things super loudly" drum solo, it was like... like this scene in Kung-fu panda with the water ddroplet. I seriously cannot describe it.
The other tracks were really cool, wiith Avishai being great, as always, and very funny. In the middle of a song, he stopped playing, and went to take the drummer's sticks. The drummer kept going with his hands. Avishai went back to his place, removed the sheets there were on his pupil, and started a riff with the sticks on it. Truely amazing.
Also there's a moment when the musician trade places: Avishai goes piano, the pianist goes drums, and the drummer goes double bass.
No need to mention that everyone stood up at the end.
