As for atmosphere, lots of metal has atmosphere, you need proper riffs and writing to build atmosphere (Something experimental post-black/folk musician is lacking in). Both of those albums I recommended you have great atmosphere, hopefully they'll get you on your way to having taste. I hate pop in my death metal (and death metal in my pop) in the same way as you'd hate someone pouring strawberry jam all over your steak. You can like both, you can like both for what they arr, but they do not and will never compliment each other. Some genres can mix, some cannot, death metal and pop will never mix well, Damage Done is a horrible abomination of both. It lacks the balls of a real death metal album and the soothingness of actual pop music, it stands on the edge as a sin against music and a testament to man's arrogance.

There are very, very few bassists better than Hibiki in metal. But yeah aside from that... drum work is probably a point to Portnoy, guitar and keys are honestly about even. Their instrumentals are definitely better-written anyways.
It's just very funny that a power metal band who generally write 4-minute chorus-focused songs are on level with a band known primarily for their insane instrumental skill. Japan, man.
