there are a lot of bands that are generally defined as "progressive punk", like The Cardiacs for instance, but is there a band out there that's like, a combination of Yes and The Reatards? a fusion of Rush and The Ramones?

like, the crunchy, lo-fi guitars and simplistic but melodically satisfying chord progressions of punk rock and the long, multi-part songs with frequent tempo changes and somewhat jazz-infused technical complexity of prog? it seems oxymoronic but something like it must exist.

the closest bands to this that I've been able to find are NoMeansNo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01lPNVv90s) and the two 9-minute songs off Green Day's American Idiot album (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMcNzjzw63I) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58hUq7hnueQ)

i mean... i'm not so much saying the whole band is prog as just those two songs

what would you define them as? a medley?
>>
>>62389401
So we're just looking for subpar songs longer than 3 minutes?
>>
>>62389401
Lmao
>>
I guess Protest the Hero would kinda fit the bill
>>
>pleb answers
The Mars Volta
Coheed and Cambria

majority of these answers are more... prog metal than prog punk
>>
>prog punk

prog and punk are literally the antithesis of each other

this?

which is exactly why it would fascinate me if someone were able to pull off a coherent fusion of them

TMV are Prog Post-hardcore so I guess that would fit the bill

fine, i will say pronk

Well, you have this chart I made (it's missing a lot of stuff though)
and there is also Brutal Prog

>>62390553
As much as prog and rock are
really, if you can't see how both are compatible you have to be a special kind of smart

This nigga serious?

The only thing I could recommend would be Floating Anarchy by Gong or Space Ritual by Hawkwind.

honestly I think NMN is the only band to pull it off with their weird time sigs and weird influences but FEAR sometimes got into that stuff. I'm not surprised there isn't more. Most punk bands seem to settle for mediocre musicianship anyway

>Rush + Ramones
NMN already
just listen to all their shit, it's enough to keep you occupied for a long time

Oh, and ignore Samla, no idea about why it's there
actually, if you keep the thread alive until tomorrow, I might make an updated version with actually better picks
>>
>>62391695
>>62393483
those might be fusions of punk and progressive rock music in one way or another but the op was asking for something more specific, i dont think cardiacs, you slut or brutal prog fit that at all, and i dont think, or it doesnt seem like you actually read it

if we were talking pronk in general, i could just post a bunch of progcore/mathcore
>>
>>62393506
i don't think it stands a chance to live through the night but i'll bump, sweet dreams prettiboi
>>
What the fuck
Why isn't anyone recommending post-punk and/or post-hardcore

>voodoo boogie
you dont actually fucking listen to that do you
fucking lol

Because you just slapped it on there after you listened to it once :)
>>
>>62393661
seems more like _you_ didn't read it because You Slut are pretty much exactly that.
>>
>>62394445
cuz that's kind of different in some obscure way that no one can explain
>>
>>62393483
Wow first time I've seen Pak mentioned on /mu/, not sure what makes em punk though
Secret Curve is even better than Motel imo
>>
>>62394598
huh, You Slut is pretty good. I can't believe I've never heard them before. and they kinda do sound like a more punk Rush.
>>
>>62394618
it's because it's kraut rock fused and not progressive rock. pretty obvious

What Cheer? Brigade headlines it and while they aren't "progressive punk" u might dig it, it's a brass band that operates like a diy punk/noise rock band. Not exactly what you're looking for but similar in concept. Their shows are absolutely punk shows imo.
>>
>>62393483
how the fuck are You Slut! at all Progressive?
They are just another shitty math rock group
>>
>>62396933
>>62396905
oh ye also

Fall of Efrafa
Jeromes Dream
maybe Number Girl's last album
>>
>>62396969
nice dubs
Jeromes Dream definitely fits the bill
>>
>>62392947
This man is right. Nomeansno are an outlier, an oddity, a unique and beautiful creature. Nothing before or after like them.

It's unfortunate to run out and want more, but love them for what they are nonetheless.
>>
>>62397199
Minutemen are the first thing that come to mind
>>
>>62397261
Alt-rock with a wry grin. Nomeansno sneered.
>>
>>62397277
how about Drive Like Jehu or Slint? Those bands are definitely "progressive"
>>
>>62397304
Drive Like Jehu is pretty close but for Slint I'd say a definite no. They're in their own genre, but not in the same genre as Nomeansno.

I can definitely see what OP is going for. Nomeansno beat the everloving shit out of their instruments, but always maintained an intelligence and craftsmanship regarding construction.

Honestly, while they certainly fit some prog certifications, they've always been punk..funk. to me. Classic funk. Sweating blood funk.

Thoughts on Fugazi?
They are my favourite band of all time and for me they were the gateway into NoMeansNo and Drive Like Jehu, etc.
>>
I don't think the Ex fit what you want but they do have jazz/free jazz and African folk influence. And more people should listen to them.

They're a novelty band, but damn good at what they do.

>>62397357
I wouldn't call the interplay on NoMeansNo - Wrong remotely similar to the interplay on DLJ's records. I think The Jesus Lizard or Minutemen would be a much closer comparison.
>>
>>62390553
yep. the sex pistols didn't wear "fuck pink floyd" shirts for no reason.
>>
>>62399226
Calling Pink Floyd prog is pushing it
>>
>>62390119
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_satiation
the correct term is song cycle. like heroes and villains or good vibrations
>>
>>62399279
also it's more to do with movie like editing of different segments than ""progressive"" songwriting
>>
please nobody say the Wipers doing 10 minute songs on youth of america... thats more like neu! or can: based off repetition and noise that prog types call not-music
>>
>>
>>62394544
I only like one track, but I like that one a lot

>>62393661
I read the post, and considered it was a good idea to recommend those two things as they are.

>>62394569
Nah

>>62394772
Motel is pretty punky though. Everybody Likes You, for example
I still have to give Secret Curve a better listen, but L'Hotel Plastique was way too awesome

>>62396948
>how the fuck are You Slut! at all Progressive?
Progressive structures
>They are just another shitty math rock group
Except they are not math rock
>>
>>62399321
middling late-2000s indeh rawk
>>
>>62396988
If you dig jeromes dream then give anything by Off Minor a listen. Heat Death of The Universe is their most aggressive and regarded as their best but I think Some Blood is a more focused album. Oh yeah, Off Minor was 3/5 of Saetia and features Steve Roche on drums.
>>
The worst genre ever
>>
>>62400364
That guy is right you slut is really just another shitty mathrock band
>>
>>62401753
Call them shitty, but they are literally not math rock.
Even Descendents are more math rock than You Slut
>>
>>62401780
The band call themselves math rock
>>
>>62401796
The band literally calls themselves "Power Prog"
Also, their second album is actually math rock, but not the first one
>>
>>62401837
Somebody asked them once after aa show if they were mathrock and they said yes
But whatever, you can keep believing in your favorite mate up genre ala brutal prog
>>
>>62401917
I don't know how I fucked that up so bad
>>
>>62401917
Yes, because from their second album onwards they actually became a math rock band.

a lot of screamo does this i think

try gospel, circle takes the square, and off minor

where does the line get drawn between a song cycle and progressive songwriting?
