explore genres/scenes thoroughly instead of finding a couple token artists & letting them be the end-all-be-all. it shows, and it's why most people either have canon taste or /mu/ taste. but at the same time, judging music from the perspective of one type of music (whether it's metal, classical, pop, etc) is bias. "this pop doesn't measure up to what makes a metal album good, so it's shit" is the cause of a lot of dumbfuckery, but the mindset extends to "this electronic music doesn't measure up to what makes my indie rock albums good." your consistency for one type of music shouldn't fuck you over for other types of music. and if i ask you what your choices for the best albums have in common and you can't say anything other than "they're famous" or "i like them," you're bad at critical thinking.
