assuming you're talking about open chords, it's simply because there are so many different chords and ways to make those chords. As long as the notes all fit on the same scale, you've got a chord in there. Generally the added rule is to not have 2 notes s half step apart, though you cab break that rule too.

Just got this baby two days ago. Schecter Blackjack Atx. God I love Schecter, the necks on all their mid range and higher end geetars are smooth as can be. I have a Damien bass that I've used in gigs for 3 years.

I live in Chicago and there are a few bands like Bassel and the Supernaturals or Hip Trip that are made up of guys I went to university with that were music majors; they seem to like what they do and play some fun, interesting music. (Gramps the Vamp is another band to check out. In fact, most of these bands have members that play in each others' groups and have been playing together for years.)
Otherwise, I can't recommend BADBADNOTGOOD highly enough. They're a young (I think all around 25 years old now) jazz/fusion trio from Toronto that take a lot of cues from hip hop. They recently did a collaboration with Ghostface Killah called "Sour Soul" and the instrumentals on it are great.
I've also really been digging on Kamasi Washington's debut album, which features a lot of young (20/30-something) jazz musicians.
I think the reason you don't see a ton of prominent jazz musicians that are celebrated the ways guys like Davis, Parker, Coltrane, and Jaco were back in the day is because the focus in contemporary jazz is shifting from soloing to composition. Washington and BBNG's works are particularly indicative of this shift.

I don't see any harm with learning on the fretless. You may struggle more in the beginning without frets to define the fretboard for you but learning correct intonation while relying on position playing will really develop your ear well. Nothing worse than when a guy thinks he can just jump from a fretted to a fretless bass and every other note is a semitone off.
The bass player in my band (we play prog rock) uses a fretless exclusively and his intonation is effortless. I say go for it.

I don't know if I can be much help desu. I'm only incidentally a bass player, as in I only play if there's one at band practice or a jam session since I don't have one of my own.
But if it makes you feel any better I think most musicians feel like they are "jumping without a parachute" when they start. I picked up guitar because I wanted to play Green Day songs in a band and their music might as well have been astrophysics for all I knew about playing guitar when I started. Now I can improvise over jazz changes and play Guthrie Govan licks. Don't let the learning process intimidate you. Just practice as often as you can, and look up whatever you don't understand online. There's WAY more information about fretless bass technique alone, from beginner to advanced levels, on YouTube than you could probably ever want to know.

I'd go with the Pacifica. The Affinity series are truly garbage. That being said, if you're willing to invest a bit more into a Classic Vibe or Vintage Modified model from Squier you'll have a quality instrument that you can gig and record with. I bought my Squier 51 back in 2005 and I still use it. It's not my main guitar anymore but I used to gig with it and used it to cut leads in the studio.

It's all valve. I'm really considering dropping $180 for the micro dark terror by orange and getting an orange 2x12 cab. I'm not sure if I could justify spending $650 on the regular dark terror.
I currently only own two bassed. CIJ Fender Jazz (some kind of 60s reissue), and my first bass which is a cheapo ESP LTD B-50. I had a few others over the years but ended up hating them and sold them, like the Lace Helix I had for a while. Don't know what I was thinking with that one. I also had a CIJ Fender Precision, but no matter what I did, I could never get it set up properly, and it always felt shit to play. So I gave it to my brother who plays gigs with it somehow.
