Consistent position. Riffs > atmosphere in metal. If I wanted music with atmosphere metal would be my last spot to look. Atmoriffs are great though, atmo metal without any semblance of riffs is godawful.

I think there is a confusion about the nature of atmospheric metal
Something like Eater of birds can be considered atmopsheric yet riffy
Even something like alcest on écailles de lune has substance if all the riffs aren't really metal i can remember tons of melodies and chord progressions from this album.
Prefering quality and substance over overused tropes is a natural thing and i think we shouldn't fight like this even if our notion of quality and substance ( so riffs in the case metal ) differs

I like metal that compliments the harsh and aggressive nature of metal, 9 out of 10 times this means riffs>atmo but that works under the assumption that atmospheric metal lacks any riffs which in many cases is false. Hell, look at the new Chthe'ilist record, it builds atmosphere while retaining amazing riffs throughout its duration. I love Incantation influenced and that is all about creating a claustrophobic and suffocating atmosphere to death metal, arguably war metal is atmospheric in how its noisy and frenzied barrage of fast riffing, violent drumming and demonic vocals creates a chaotic atmosphere reminiscent of war. All in all, if it can retain the heavy and evil feel that made me fall in love with extreme metal then I'll like it, sadly much atmospheric black metal doesn't deliver on this, but death metal when made to be atmospheric works just as well ass riff-centric death metal.

I mainly listen to extreme metal when I listen to metal, and a good 85% of the extreme metal I listen to falls under death metal (unless you consider war metal more rooted in black than death). I still like some traditional heavy and thrash bands but I mainly listen to metal for the extreme stuff. So when I don't want something heavy I'll listen to something not metal, which really includes anything, lately I've been on a post-hardcore and hip-hop crave.

Check out Gloom by Macabre, they were on of the earliest bands of both grind and death and as simple as Gloom was it was already kind of a genre buster (a thing they would be more well known later on)
