I need your help, /mu/tants,

I have a solo performance assessment tomorrow at college and I need a song to play.

I've only been playing for just over a year and I've never had lessons.

I can do basic finger picking patterns, all the basic chord shapes, barre chords, all the basic strumming patterns, a few picking patterns, all the hammer on, pull off stuff. I never play electric, so I can't do solo's and fast playing or anything like that.

I'm trying to paint you a picture of my skillset, could anyone recommend me a song to learn and perform tomorrow based on what I said I can do?

Would really appreciate it
>>
OP here with a self bump, I was thinking I'd maybe try one of these songs, but I doubt I could play them flawlesssly

if you're looking for something instrumental, here are some really nice guitar arrangements of erik satie's gymnopedies about on the internet, try one of those, they're generally really easy but will look and sound really good as a solo performance.
>>
>>62012895
I can actually play that but the chords are repetitive

>>62012936

That's my dream song to be able to play but there's no way I could play that
>>
>>62012984
Yes it is but if you can play if fluently and well, that's about the limits of your skills unless you want to play something faster. You are essentially a novice and how well you can play as a novice is what determines your wuality right now. If you can play KoCF without buzzing frets, stopping, etc, you're doing alright for a totally uneducated pleb

That's a good idea I might try that

Great song but probably too hard

Try blackbird, fun to play and sounds really nice, shouldn't take that long for the muscle memory to kick in either

Prob don't have enough time to learn it but it's a great tune to know

King Crimson - Epitaph is a pretty fun and not that hard one, probably can showcase most of your skills too.

I might do a Blackbird and Yesterday medley,

or I might do Don't Think Twice (It's Alright)
>>
>>62015320
send me a vocaroo of you playing it then
>>
>>62015629
Blackbird and Yesterday are in different tunings, although you could shift one of them like in this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry578dyGEa0
>>
>>62013126
Sounds decent enough tbqh anon, once you're singing over it and the guitar is amplified properly the flaws will be hard to hear by the untrained ear.
>>
>>62015656
I don't like OK Computer, lol. But really, the chords are simple, it's slow song and the string skipping isn't that hard. You do know there's two guitars in that, right?
>>
>>62013079
Hijacking the thread for a sec. I've been playing the song for a while, what do you guys think?

Julia (get that travis picking pattern down) or Mother Nature's Son

Yeah that's my plan. Blackbird is in G and Yesterday is in F but you can Yesterday in G or just tune down and do both in F
>>
>>62015753
Well obviously I'd try and mimic Thom Yorke's solo performance(s) of it, which is harder than it looks I find.

Thom Yorke is an underrated acoustic player in general
>>
>>62013126
that is absolutely fine
>>
>>62015799
>http://vocaroo.com/i/s0otvZTkiwtc

Picking was a little bit all over the place at first but when you got into it it sounded really good, close to the original.

Dank vocals as well desu senpai, you nailed the whispery technique he used
>>
>>62016185
They're very standard. Can you do tremolo picking? 'Cause otherwise it's very standard pent shapes.
>>
>>62016017
What song is this? Sounds nice anon
>>
>>62016496
Don't Think Twice (It's Alright) by Dylan. Suggested further up the thread. Thanks man!
>>
>>62016275
You posted the wrong vocaroo but I assume you mean my link so thanks. I was glad it worked out that way. That was my vocal style since the beginning but since discovering Eliott Smith, it really solidified it and I took to his songs right away. Same for Thom Yorke, and Sufjan Stevens, I can play a lot of their stuff pretty well. I can play most of the songs in the thread so if you need help OP, I got you.

I may as well contribute a bit. Don't think twice is a good pick, anything Dylan can work. I love Cohen but the audience rarely appreciates what they're hearing when they hear someone sing a Leonard Cohen song. He is the grand master of song. Big shoes to fill. Try Bright Eyes. Anything from Wide Awake. Land Locked Blues, or Lua.
>>
>>62016814
Yeah wrong vocaroo lol

No problem, I've just finished learning Blackbird but it's still not quite ready yet.

I'm gonna try Don't Think Twice desu, got all night to learn anyway. And yeah I agree about Cohen, pretty polarizing to cover but Jeff Buckley hit it out the fucking park with Hallelujah like nobody ever has with a cover

I'll look at those artists you mentioned, I'm already a fan of Bright Eyes.

Do you like Nick Drake?
>>
>>62016949
Talking of great covers, what about trying something from Johnny Cash's later albums. Everyone knows Hurt, but his cover of Mercy Seat by Nick Cave is my favourite. Doesn't sound too hard either.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGGSTiDOjKU
>>
>>62016949
I like Nick Drake
>>
>>62016949
Hallelujah is one of the MOST covered songs of all time and Jeff Buckley did it better than anyone has or ever will, I can't stand to hear anyone else even attempt that song. I prefer Jeff's covers to his own material, not to knock his writing, that's just how spectacular of a performer he was. I prefer Live At Sin-E (the special edition) to Grace. And I love Grace. Listen to his Dylan covers. Especially Just Like A Woman. My God. He loved Dylan. I love Dylan. But I could never do Dylan the way Jeff does. I've played open mics, and you can't do anything about the obnoxious chatter, Jeff could quiet the whole house and drop jaws with his voice. Elliott Smith could do that too in his own way. I'd give anything to see that. Both of them.

I do love Nick Drake. I don't play any of his songs though. And if you aren't into Sufjan Stevens, get into Sufjan Stevens, he's a genius. I also love Conor Oberst, I can play just about everything he's written.
>>
>>62012854
led zeppelin
that's the way
>>
>>62017778
Also, Don't Think Twice is widely covered and in turn rarely played correctly. People want to cut corners so they can play campfire versions. This is the correct way. So ignore any tutorial or chord chart that doesn't place the capo on the 4th fret. Unless you want to give it your own twist.

Very simple folk changes. http://vocaroo.com/i/s08Nx6WnEfyx
>>
>>62018149
Is >>62016017 alright?
>>
>>62017778

I agree 100%, I admire your passion for music. Jeff, Dylan and Smith are all among my favourite artists and I know what you mean about quieting the room.

And I am into Sufjan Stevens, absolutely loving his latest album. I'll check out the other guy you mentioned.
>>
>>62018149
It's funny you say that I just recorded an attempt at Don't Think Twice and it's a fucking abomination.

Really struggling to learn it properly

if you cant play that you shouldnt be performing to an audience
>>
>>62018268
That just needs some fine tuning, it sounds nice.
>>
>>62018324
I am using it,

That attempt just then was just me reading the chords and trying to improvise but it failed majorly.

I'm trying to follow the video but I'm struggling desu
>>
>>62018375
It took me two or three hours to learn it from watching the video so just keep going with that. I'd say I'm more of a novice than you so if I can do it, you can!
>>
Attempt at Blackbird

http://vocaroo.com/i/s0RxW455SjNH
>>
>>62018467
There's one note I think you got wrong both times you played it in Blackbird, in the descending part, and Yesterday sounds a bit too quick but I guess you'd play it differently on the day.
>>
>>62018215
Hell yeah. But use your thumb to hit the A# (F# to capo) when you play D7. It makes for a nicer melody when you can hear the bass note traveling. Especially with a D7 to G7. And you don't have to be too particular about picking. It's a folk song so give it a folk feel, as long as you keep the rhythm (you do). Sounds nice.
>>
>>62018993
If I understand right I think I had my thumb where you're saying (6th fret if you ignore the capo?) on it but must have missed the string. Thanks for the advice, that's the only folk song I can play so haven't really got any experience with that sort of music. I want to learn A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall next.

Try this one OP, Space Oddity by Bowie

it's quite easy and a good song, give it a try

Fucking awesome dude. I've always wanted to people to play a translation of the piano notes on the guitar because it sounds great

You wouldn't happen to have tabs would you? Or did you do it by ear?
>>
>>62019844
Mostly by ear plus watching this video https://youtu.be/cZZG126_acc

I'm probably not playing it PERFECTLY but it's good enough. Chords are easy enough.

A
x02532
x5675
F
E
Am
Like Am/B? x20120
F again
C again
221000. (Just the C shape moved down half step)
Back to F. And that's the verse, watch the video for the changes.

Outro is A - F - D7 - D7 with F in the bass and open high e, not sure of the name - and E.
>>
>>62021079
Thanks man I'm gonna try and learn it tomorrow

Anyway I'm going to bed, gonna try and wing my song tomorrow, wish me luck lol

Peace
