What do you guys think of best of albums or just listening to hit singles in general?

Depends, works really well for simplistic genres like soul, rock, dance, indie and hip hop.

Why tho? I get that albums are a cohesive whole and prefer listening to those but there are many artists that for me have a handful of great songs and almost everything else on their albums is filler.

Bands like The Smiths, The Cure, and The Brain Jonestown Massacre have comps better than any studio album. It depends on the group and the record, really.
Singles compilations are fine
The rest in the "best of" vain is pretty useless

Compilations are OK, if the artist/band isn't drastically changing sound from record to record, but if they do (e.g. OP-pic), it's fucking trash.
Listening to singles is alright if you don't have much time to really get into the band and also can work if you're trying to get into somebody with a large backlog, since there's much more chance you'll find a single that you like, instead of listening to 1-2 full albums that you're not guaranteed to get on the first try, and dropping everything, missing on something that you'd maybe like.

all the good songs without all the filler and it all surprisingly flows nicely
I find them helpful with getting into an artist with a big discography. The Best Of was my introduction to Radiohead, even though the band and the fans despise it (understandably)
