What do you guys think of best of albums or just listening to hit singles in general?
>>
Shit.
>>
Depends, works really well for simplistic genres like soul, rock, dance, indie and hip hop.
>>
>>62007101
they're fine if they're an older artist/group but it's pretty dumb for anything else
>>
>>62007112
Why tho? I get that albums are a cohesive whole and prefer listening to those but there are many artists that for me have a handful of great songs and almost everything else on their albums is filler.
>>
>>62007101
Bands like The Smiths, The Cure, and The Brain Jonestown Massacre have comps better than any studio album. It depends on the group and the record, really.
>>
Singles compilations are fine
The rest in the "best of" vain is pretty useless

>The Brain Jonestown Massacre

my fucking nigga, spacegirl and other favorites is my favorite bjm album by far

The Best of 1980–1990
1990–2000 is okay too
>>
>>62007101
Compilations are OK, if the artist/band isn't drastically changing sound from record to record, but if they do (e.g. OP-pic), it's fucking trash.

Listening to singles is alright if you don't have much time to really get into the band and also can work if you're trying to get into somebody with a large backlog, since there's much more chance you'll find a single that you like, instead of listening to 1-2 full albums that you're not guaranteed to get on the first try, and dropping everything, missing on something that you'd maybe like.

the best of the doors is good

all the good songs without all the filler and it all surprisingly flows nicely
>>
I find them helpful with getting into an artist with a big discography. The Best Of was my introduction to Radiohead, even though the band and the fans despise it (understandably)
>>
>>62007253
their live albums usually function as good greatest hits records. U22 is great, I can't think of any examples of songs of theirs that don't sound better live
>>
a shit
>>
comps are fine but a "best of" usually just means biggest hits.
