i want to start making music but i have no musical knowledge or software. i guess my first question is, are there any good free DAWs out there?
i do have audacity and a willingness to spend a lot of time on this

A DAW is just a combination mixer and tape deck. It is not an instrument. You do not make music with a DAW, you process and record music with a DAW. Starting in this way will make you the modern equivalent of an old Amiga tracker goon- you'll think entirely in terms of writing for instruments you don't have or that suck, and as a result everything will be more like outsider art than actual music. The world has enough "music" made by teens who pirated Nuendo, Izotope and a bunch of romplers.
Even the dubstep kiddos using Ableton are primarily using software synthesizers they learned intimately in standalone mode controlled by hardware with MIDI outputs. They started with the production of a sound, and then came upon a DAW that suited them. The DAW is never a starting point. You start somewhere else and eventually come to it.
Go pick up a $200 instrument off Craigslist or a guitar shop and learn how to play something. Then, and only then, do you need to fuck around on a computer.

unless you have hardware (drum machine, keyboard, etc) audacity isnt where you actually make beats or anything. also any daw is free if you are looking in the right place. and expect to not like what you make at first, it took me 2 years before i could make anything ok and im still amateur. also i rec fl studio. rock on homie

Where would you recommend GETTING a synth under $100?
Not OP, I have a couple years of experience with guitar and music theory (still total shit), so I wouldn't really be going into anything blind. I'm interested in playing around with synths n shit to just make a soundtrack to a shitty RPG maker game I've been working on. I was wondering if something like ableton or FL would be the place to start or if I needed any hardware at all for that.
