what are some good noise blogs? I love using these to find weird shit and having reviews of it. it's a great way to contextualize the more obscure aspects of experimental music. these are the ones I use that are relevant to /noise/. also webzines would be wonderful, I only know heathen harvest which mostly concerns itself with neofolk and atmoblack.

Bumping with track overviews and opinions.

>TRPZ
Disorted digi synths coupled with appropriate lengths of
silence builds some tension, before moving into almost a wall.
Some other textures/tones would have been nice among the
overdriven military-industrial-esque vibe.

********************************************************
>Race Bateman
Starts slow atmosphere and crackly, which is a nice contrast
to previous track. surprising shrill sounds stab and break
into industrial rhythms.

I want to make some comparison between the shit-effort
aesthetics here and Texas's penchant for backwards thinking,
though it may be unjustified given that there seems to be
some sort of fan base for this stuff.

********************************************************
>Gas Station of Love
An interesting sample starts off this track, something I would
not have necessarily expected in
hollow sounding bass starts winding upwards, sounding something
like a malfunctioning gameboy in a tin can, or like listening
to a live skrillex concert recorded and played back on a
Motorola Razr. Perhaps a tad long and laboured?

********************************************************
>Melanina
Menacing sounding PE, sounds like what the cover of
"Music for the Jilted Generation" looks like, though not
nearly as comical. It's oddly danceable, placing you in
the rave from hell and loving it. All of a sudden, the DJ's
deck catches on fire, and nobody minds.

********************************************************
>The Dreaming Corpse
Once again, another soft beginning to draw a contrast with
the tail end of the previous track. Could very well be the
sounds of a corpse decompsing, as various insects aid in the
decomposition.
Minimal, 'lo fi' spirals, sweeps and taps become rhythmic
and tribal. The insects are on the move. Can you hear them?
>>
>>61997378

Got an important question for you guys. I don't know if it was in the pastebin at one time, but I don't have a link to it anyway. Are there any PDFs of books about the classic noise and industrial acts of Europe, particularly that go in to detail about the motivations and reasons behind the art? Thanks in advance

>>61999966
Lucky I just finished track 10. I do feel like some tracks are far more engaging and easier to write about, while others I can't say much other than just giving some flowery descriptions.

>XathaX
It's apparent from the title the XathaX feels the creep
of suburban population looming on their doorstep. Running
out of land to build houses, the next most obvious step is
upwards, to build monumental buildings to house hundreds.
You can never run out of sky.

********************************************************
>Pagoda Mast
Here we head straight into another balls to the wall chaotic
mess. Rhythmic-in-a-good way, artificial snares break up the
dirge of noisy rumbles. Plainfield might not be a place you
want to live, but at least you're having a good time making
your stuff here.

********************************************************

>xshewasholdinganumbrellax
A hail storm on a tin roof, or a not quite tuned AM
radio, you be the judge. Squeels of feedback occasionally
rise up over the lo fi calamity, likely suggesting that it
is the latter.

Can anyone shed some light on what Kotzescheisze means?

********************************************************

>Window Listener
Longtime noise maker and raw data mangler Window Listener
brings another track to the table. Guys, if you're going
to purely work with importing raw data, this is how you do
do it. This is composed and representing a clear aesthetic.

********************************************************

>Cosmonaut
Not sure where to place this among all the other tracks.
Not to say that it is bad in any way, just that it's
definitely not the most noisy track here. It's atmospheric
for sure, though would much more comfortable fit in the
middle of a traditional doom album. Seriously heavy Planet
Caravan vibes here.
>>
>>61999941
>What are the main essentials?
I hate the concept of essentials but here is a selection of mostly "famous" artists that will give you a good sense of what the genre is like
mo*te - life in a peaceful new world
the rita - thousands of dead gods (and then the rest of his discog)
Vomir & Yoshihiro Kikuchi - Collaboration
anything else by vomir he's a purist and it's all pretty similar
vag - music for smoke filled elevators
>>
>>61994419
How was the tracklist determined? I'm sort of embarrassed by my submission now, this is great.
>>
>>62000274
Looks like it was simply in order of submission. When I did the last one, I ordered it alphabetically. In both cases, I think the overall experience could have been better with a bit of curatorial work, choosing which tracks play off each other. I'm not up to track 13, and I had to turn up the volume for 12 so I could actually notice the subtleties in its sounds.

Posies
As with all compilations, there are going to be some tracks
that just stand out above all others. In this case it was
because of the track order, but having previously heard much
of Posies work, I am just as impressed here as I am with
the rest of his work. At just two minutes long, it doesn't
drag on like some of the other tracks tend to. The variations
in feedback, and percussive elements really add a sense of
urgency, and hardly feel laboured.
The BC page doesn't have any artist link, so here's one
https://soundcloud.com/posies

********************************************************

Sovende
You may want to turn your volume up for this one. The
entire track seems to be made up mostly of high end, with
some field recordings and new age inspired synth work
heard faintly in the background. What this track does well
is subtlty. There are climaxes, though they don't reach the
epicness for lack of a better description you might expect
in some other PE.
Perhaps if it was mixed a little louder, it may stand out
better among the other tracks which are all loud, though
that in my opinion would take away most of its charm.

If anyone could point me to more of this guys work, I'd
appreciate it.

********************************************************

tttttttttlllllllll
Having been to Melbourne only once in my life (and for a
short time at that), I definitely feel what what trying to
be achieved here. On the surface, Melbourne really doesn't
differ all that much from any other major cities in Australia,
it does however have a far more cosmopolitan feel than some.
Field recordings of city chatter center you in such a place,
and a dim hum approximates the induction fans that inhabit
the inner city laneways.

>Rafiki Stradley
I'm probably missing out on some kind of local political
discussion here, but if Melton really is a town which
benefits from money promised to aid dying children, then
that's a little fucked. So, why not make a track about it?

This one is a slow burner. Sitting among the longer tracks
here, it is a nice change of pace to the heart pumping
electronic chaos found otherwise in the a lot of of the
previous tracks.

********************************************************

>Industrial Hydrophobia
At first this would also seem to be an out of place tune.
The simple chord progression works well against the slew
of junk noise and squeeling feedback that follows, it is
quite surprising, especially given the anticipation built
up after the quietness of the previous track. You can in
fact hear the chords played throughout the sonic turmoil.

********************************************************

>Nihil's Maw
I feel as though I'd experience such a HNW track better
with larger speakers, though I digress. I do quite like
the genre, and won't speak ill about it.
Nihil's Maw properly capture the aesthetic of the harsh
noise wall. The title here even speaks of floods
moving and building layers of soil in such a way that I
can imagine somebody sculpting a track like this. It's just
the right length too, one thing I personally like about
the HNW form is that it can take on any shape or form.
>>
>>62002656
Thanks for doing this I like your reviews
>>
Any advice on how I can improve? I feel like this track came out too cluttered so I'm going to work on making one solid wall as opposed to simple static with shitty clipping reverb swells.

I like working with physical instruments, any effects or tricks I should know about? I've been doing stuff like playing my guitar with a drill.
>>
>>62003087
4mn in your track, I appreciate that it's not one single sound going on, it has some movements. This is a plus compared to some other tracks.

I think it lacks some overdubbing. You have this cyclical really distorted chaos going on on the foreground, maybe you could have add some other sound to the "periphery", like piercing feedback, low rumble with a smoother textures, anything that will add contrast and depth.

Now if you want to make walls + accoustic, my advice would be to look into motors. You can scavenge small motors from tape players, power them with 9v batteries and have the axis grind guitar strings, cymbal, springs, etc. Basically it's a spinning bow.

I've made this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TFT_E4DbHtg

I've added a felt pad on the motor axis for a smoother sound, because I was looking to make drone and such.
>>
who are good harsh/noise-wall recommendations except the japanoise scene compare with my pic? i'm hardly new to listen to noise and has just checked some essential albums. the rita, prurient and vomir fit me well
>>
>>62003212
This is exactly what I was looking for. Spinning bow was pretty much what I was going for with the drill. I'm probably going to start building instruments now. My end goal is to be able to play this shit live.

Anyone have any experience doing percussion stuff in noise? I kind of like having a driving rhythm, and was thinking about doing some trashy tinny percussion on a loop while I go nuts in the foreground. Maybe something with my hammer.
>>
>>62003291
Same guy who answered you. I don't really have an experience with percussion in noise. But you remind me of this crazy live vid I've seen this weekend :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nedv2RkJyNw

That contact mic taped to the throat is badass.
>>
>>62003316
Oh shit this is sweet as fuck. I think I might have to play around with something like that. I really like voice sampling.
>>
>>62003330
If you like sampling, there is the usual digital sampler/looper solution, but maybe you could look into tape loops ? They are way clunkier but they sound gnarly, and the whole "falling apart" aspect can give interesting results. I've built my whole setup around a 4-track tape player for live tape looping.
>>
>>62003361
I will definitely look into that. I'll probably start stockpiling equipment this week. The plan is to put out an album/ep/something in the next couple months or so, but spend even more time and effort making sure it doesn't suck. I was looking into The Rita's stuff with the two stroke. I might try something like that.
>>
>>62002998
>>62002998
Cheers. I've done 26 tracks, I'll finish the rest tomorrow some time.

>Infernal Climax
True to the title, there isn't much happening in this track.
Open it in your favourite media player, and click anywhere
along the timeline, and you won't notice much change. Does
that make this a wall of noise?
Perth is apparently a place where nothing happens. I'd go out
on a limb and say that there are some things that happen there
(in fact one of my favourite Australian bands comes from here),
though thematically, yes this track does make sense. It's not
the easiest to digest wall, though does serve it's purpose.
I don't know what it would be like to grow up in Perth. I don't
know if I 100% like this track, though as I play through
segments again and again, I feel it does get stronger. Perhaps
this is one of those cases where a longer wall is a better wall.
Play this one through a couple of times, and you can comes to
appreciate the variations in noise that you can hear

********************************************************

>Lachesist
Possibly one of my favourite track names on the album. I can
just imagine some cops raiding a DIY noise gig in the middle of
a town square, after one of the performers assaults a passerby.
In fact, that's almost what happened. Here's an excerpt from
the Post Life Industries BC page which explains it better than
I could -

"I recorded the vocals in the pavilion you see on the cover.
It's in a large public park not 10 minutes from my childhood
home, where I used to play baseball as a kid. It was the
middle of a cold night, after Christmas but before
New Year's. Families snugged tight in their homes called the
cops because they heard a maniac yelling in the back yard.
After they patted me down and made sure I wasn't a murderous
felon, they were interested to hear what I was recording.

They hated it."

calling WCPC a "hack" when anybody can ask their parents for a couple hundred bucks to play with some expensive synths and act "talented" in noise. Go fucking do what he does one night. He's not only the one modern PE act that actually makes real PE (instead of just labeling some weak death industrial as PE), but his aesthetics are even in the right place. Noise is supposed to piss you off. You just got your first taste of something real, and you couldn't handle it. You're out of your element.

As far as I know no one's done a PDF of it yet, but it would be well worth your time and money to get a copy of the first (and likely only) issue of As Loud As Possible, put out by Steve Underwood who's also responsible for Harbinger Sound. Of particular interest to you is a LONG spread with Gary Mundy, where he talks about the history of Broken Flag, performing live as Ramleh, and discusses release-by-release everything put out on the label, with specific offerings from the other artists involved when possible.

This isn't even getting in to the other fantastic articles included: interviews with Climax Denial, Sewer Election, Putrefier, G.X. Jupitter-Larsen, and one of the most comprehensive explanations of the motivations of HNW by the man himself, Sam McKinlay.

Copies are increasingly scarce. I've found a site that looks like it might have copies in stock:

http://www.eatenbysquirrels.com/product/as-loud-as-possible-the-noise-culture-magazine-1/

Otherwise, try contacting Dilloway at Hanson Records as I imagine he might still have copies as well.

That's exactly what I did. Sound collage is more important for me than noise, generally, and I recorded that track before this project came around. I knew when I submitted it it would kind of stick out, but I figured it'd be appreciated for a 3-hour+ long project.

to the person who put the NBND comp on to Discogs

firstly, thanks for your effort

as these comps will always be associated with /noise/ in one way or another, would it be worth them being released under a "label" of /noise/, and then given their relevant catalog number (NBND001 or NBND2015), rather than their own NBND label?

just a thought, to make it easier to explore the network of /noise/ artists we have here

I organised the first compilation, and the only problem I see is if someone goes and does a half assed job at it. There are already a few labels associated with /noise/ posters, some quality and some not so good, and I think there are already plenty of options for more established labels to put stuff out. Not to mention the plethora of labels associated with the various noise subreddits.

Secondly, branching out and having your noise heard by people from different circles will definitely help improve your listener base, and any feedback you may get.
>>
>>62017934
what are some of those labels (both good and bad)
>>
>>62017934
https://orbtapes.bandcamp.com
postlifeindustries.bigcartel.com
burnwardrecords.bandcamp.com

Those are the first three that come to mind. You could search /r/cassetteculture for 'noise' and 'label', and come up with others.

Of the above, I personally like the look or Post Life Industries, though I haven't got any clue as to what they actually sound like or whatever. I've also had dealings with Pro Death and Bicephalic Records before, so they seem quite good.

Our Contemporary Experience

Is dad-noise a thing? If it is, it would be something like this.
Images of slightly bent LP's rotating around a turn table,
surface noise, AM radio and wooden panels on cars. It might not
be contemporary any more, but once upon a time, in certain
places in the world, it was. And sometimes it's ok to sit back
and reminisce with a cup of tea or coffee.

********************************************************

Asbestos Lead Asbestos

Hey, don't sound so bitter! I'm sure there's more to your town than
just shitty friends.
Some of the more groovy and interesting stuff I've heard from Asbestos
Lead Asbestos. They way rhythm is handled is quite good, often in
noise rhythm will fall into either the industrial or breakbeat category.
This comes has the hallmarks of the 90's/early 00's vein of noise
weirdness, not that I'm overly familiar with it. It almost reminds me
of something off of Devin Townsend's Devlab album.

But seriously peeps, if your friends are using you in any way, set clear
boundaries and expectations for them.

********************************************************

Cowboy of Noise
Speaking frankly, this is the sort of noise I don't find all that
appealing. Perhaps watching it live would be more interesting. I
am not quite sure how it is generally put together, save for combining
recordings of various circuit bent electronic toys and other live
sounds, which is something I could certainly see myself enjoying the
sight of. It comes across as very laid back, not taking anything too
seriously, which is something I can certainly admire. A lot of the time
noise can get stuck within the oh so serious image, so in contrast to
that this can be something refreshing. And at just under four
minutes long, it doesn't stick around too long to become annoying.

I'm lovin the UI on this

>We Also Let Blood
There seem to be an appropriate amount of walls on this album so far,
all well spaced apart too. The good thing about walls, is that they
can give you time to reflect on things. Be it other tracks on a
compilation, or reflecting on your own placement within society, or
lackethere of. For any of you who haven't read Vomir's manifesto on the
harsh noise wall, please do.

Close your eyes, and use these spaces of time to focus deeply on
something. It's ok it you don't have an epipheny.

********************************************************

>Melinoe
I first read this title as an insult to the audience. Maybe it is.
But it can just as easily be an insult given to the artist. NY is
one of the largest metropolitan centers of the world, I can't imagine
it would be an easy place to break into the local scene.

Let's focus on the noise for a minute though... Another wall, though
this time it appears to be made from feedback, rather than a sound source
distorted to hell and back. As such, it doesn't feel solid, it feels
as if it could collapse at any point in time.

********************************************************

>Luis Vilbro
Another slow, steady atmospheric track here. There are two main
loops playing off each other, which would ideally culminate in some
minor catastrophy. Could easily be the beginning track to a great
dark ambient or minimal PE record.

********************************************************

>Fever House
Far more searing in tone than the track about Searing.
There's many things we can thank Birmingham for despite it being
known for it's industry rather than culture. I'm sure you can
think of at least one or two great things. As such, there is an
appropriately metallic taste to Fever House's submission, even
bucking the naming trend to go for something far more straightforward.

Posh Isolation / Croatian Amor have never really done anything for me but that was a really neat idea.
>>
>>62035867
Same. The kind you wished you had before them. That may be one of the few "conceptual" ties to an album that works for me. For me, all that nylon fetishism in HNW is bs honestly.
>>
>>62036158
this is only your point of view, it gets me hart desu
>>
>>62036158
I'm largely the same regarding nylon / foot worship and how little I care for it personally, but that's certainly not going to stop me from picking up something by The Rita. And missing out on that "Total Women's Stocking Worship" shirt is something I've been kicking myself over for a while.

His more recent focus on ballet is definitely something that appeals to me though. It feels more like new ground, and not on the tired level of feet / giallo / nihilism / whatever.
>>
>>62036417
I am with you 100% on that last point.
>>
>>62017934

How would you describe a half-assed job?

I suppose really mate, as it's your comp so you're the label. Maybe it'd be a pain in the ass to retrospectively alter these details, but something worth thinking about for future comps maybe?

>>62018508

This gave me the idea of cultural exchange between noise communities, where we make comps for them and likewise, for each community to critique and enjoy. Would anyone be interested in this?
>>
>>62036284
>>62036417
Yeah I know it's just a point of view, and I phrased in a blunt way to spark some conversation.
It's just that I don't see how artists make their connection between the theme for a particular release and their sound. What it conveys or how it's created. Although if I remember correctly The Rita has used recording of ballerina dancers performing with contact mics in their shoes, then mangled the result to death. I must admit that's interesting.
>>
>>62036606
It's an abstract relationship a lot of times. Things often just sound like a concept and that's all there is to it. Other time it's based on psychological responses to certain sounds and thus an association with an atmosphere and a concept. Other non innate associations can come from experience such as with pop culture, media, or other events. You have to think of it in a detailed light with regards to moods, atmospheres, and psychological response. It's not just an arbitrary association with a concept.
