It's the snibbedy of snab x-DDD

The point of these threads, is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to, and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

We track our progress using calendars, which we fill with the albums we listen to on each day and a rating of some sort for all of them. There are templates in the following posts. We encourage you to write the albums' titles and the artists' names somewhere on your calendar. We don't have any tools for creating these calendars, we use simple image editing softwares. You can predetermine a schedule for a month or you can report back on whatever album you randomly picked every day. Many of us make our schedules interesting in various way, popular ones being genre restrictions, new releases, and recs from the /daily/ community.

We had a plug.dj room, which we used to shitpost for a little while. It's now forever empty, so if you want to spend a little time there, it is too late. You can find the temporary substitute here though:

no one should really be able to start the threads, but usually one of /daily/'s dedicated trips starts them anyways.

We encourage you to start it, just be sure to use the standard OP.

>Chris Watson - Weather Report
This is top quality nature recordings. The sound quality is incredible and there's so much details to pick out. The first track takes place in the Kenyan savannah. Watson recorded this track over the span of 14 hours. At one point a storm breaks out and you can feel the tension rising and the animals getting excited. The 2nd track was recorded in 4 months in a Scottish glen. Again the wind and the rain are the protagonists and it's very vivid. The last track was recorded near a glacier in Ireland. At first you can only hear the intimidating crackling of the glacier as he moves. After that you're taken to the surface, meeting the cold wind and a variety of animals again.
What troubles me is that Watson obviously made cuts in what he recorded and he rearranged the bits to make these 18 minutes tracks. This probably makes the music more beautiful but it can make it less real.
9/10

>Jana Winderen - Energy Field
Jana Winderen uses her recordings as the basis of deep, intense ambient compositions. The base material is mainly sound recorded underwater near Norway and Greenland. The last track is massive. It feels like you're diving deeper and deeper into the ocean, reaching an unknown and abstract place where there's not even water anymore.
8/10

What's next ?

>Lil Ugly Mane - Mista Thug Isolation

Lil Ugly Mane's style is now totally defined: drawing inspiration from southern hip hop, chopped and screwed, horrorcore, and Travis' wicked mind, he creates something pretty unique. And enjoyable. Very enjoyable.
Everything is pitched down, and every song has some strong bass frequencies, this results in a very muddy sounds that is a blueprint of Shawn Kemp's production.
Still, there is a lot of variety, in both style and sound. Travis can produce both bangers and chilled down tracks, and they all flow and feel very natural. Another key element in those beats are the cheesy synths: they sound exactly like Pen & Pixel covers; it's pretty incredible and they make this record very characteristic. Hell, "Bitch I'm Lugubrious" samples Wicked Witch and "Breezem Out" samples a very corny synth-based Christmas song! And I don't know which is the weirdest choice!
It's hard to explain, but it kinda sounds like lean-infused music through a fever dream.

The lyrics also fell...strange.
For the most part they are you typical horrorcore/gangsta quotables; they are pretty funny and entertaining, also because they are a little more extreme that your standard stuff.
But then there are some lines that make me feel confused: I mean, I don't think that saying that a girl is on your dick like flies on a box of fruit is "thug" or "gangsta", same for "imma slit my wrists no tourniquet", meeting bitches outside milk stores or churches, "28 grams gotta bag em out", "pocket full of clips that's bananas" and the list could go on for a long time, but you got the idea.
Or maybe they are thug or gangsta in a fever dream.

Classic Lil Ugly Mane style.

can we talk about really long songs

i'm writing one right now and it's gone through so many permutations

i wanna talk about structure, about schizophrenic jumps v. long drawn out sections, and about circling around lots of themes and doing the length justice. it's so easy for a long track to disappear up its own asshole

what are /daily/s favorite >9 minute long tracks, what makes a good long song, what makes a bad one, how to present a narrative

>>61990606

3 gets the highest for being the most entertaining person in the movie.

4 and 8 are pretty interchangeable as the only logical characters in the movie. The movie makes 4 seem like a cool logical badass, so he gets to be above 8.

If we're ranking characters 12 is objectively the worst. And 3 drops behind 4 and 8
>>
>>61990642
>what makes a good long song, what makes a bad one
structure. the song shouldn't stay exactly the same for too long , which can usually get very monotonous and boring for the listener. of course repetition can be done right (think about drone music) , but its usually not a very good idea for long tracks

9 minutes is above the average song length, but its not very long

Scratch Acid- The Greatest Gift

Scratch Acid- Scratch Acid
Definitely their best work. The guitars sound up in your face, and David Yow's vocals are probably the best they'll ever be.
4/5
Scratch Acid- Just Keep Eating
This one has a definite drop in quality, really it's just too overproduced and clean sounding, takes away a lot of the potency of the music
2.5/5
Scratch Acid- Berserker
A nice bridge between the s/t and goat, but not as good as either
3.5/5
Overall Score- 3.5.5

>>61990642
>what are /daily/s favorite >9 minute long tracks
idk, according to itunes my most played long songs are Medicine Bottle by Red House Painters; After the Flood by Talk Talk, Luau by Drive Like Jehu
>what makes a good long song
a long song that feels like one cohesive piece, presenting enough new ideas throughout to not wear out its welcome. for example, Luau constantly evolves throughout and finally goes into a long intense jam session. Medicine Bottle is very repetitive but features a very intreguing narrative along with some surprising sections (like the sporadic choruses, the instrumental bridge).
>what makes a bad one
poor performance, messy and unfocused songwriting (excessive section-hopping for example), really anything that fails to keep my attention throughout its runtime.
>how to present a narrative
ehh, keep it focused on a central theme; it helps to tie in certain sections to each other.

Sun Kil Moon's tracks hardly change in structure or pacing throughout their duration but they come off as refreshing despite their length. He's my biggest influence in writing songs of longer length because what makes his works stand out is his constantly new information that he uses to build up the tension of a song.

It's not so much the instrumentation that builds up as much as the story. I Saw The Film The Song Remains The Same shows theevidence of this. Though the narrative isn't exactly linear or in connection with each other, Mark Kozelek draws varied emotions from his monotone voice because the actions taking place are so universal.

In the end, it tends to be tension building (and releasing) that draws me to keep coming back to a song when it's a bit long.
>>
Very recently started listening to glitch/trip hop. Any recs welcome.

Also, if anyone knows any more like Björk - Pluto and Anne Clark - Our Darkness, I'd be very happy to check em out. I can't really put my finger on exactly why I like it, but that deliciously droning underlaying beat probably has a lot to do with it.

>>61990677
9 is what i consider the minimum for a "long track." the one i'm working on is longer, but that honestly doesn't matter. if songs were bridges, i'd say 9 minutes is about where a track starts needing support beams.

>>61990753
hello newtrip

see the style of the current project i'm working on is a really nice breeding ground for long tracks--i'm riding this beachy, americana directionlessness vibe. florida panhandle, shepherd's dog style. you've probably never heard any of my stuff, but i don't do drone. if i do a long song, it will have a narrative. it will have changes. but i don't want to cheat and pull a "long song is a suite of shorter songs." i want to build a tapestry of interconnecting themes 'n' shit.

>>61990816
swans should probably be on my listening list. they have a ton of good longer tracks. the other two already have a known presence in my project, and space cadet is a really solid influence for sure. my work is closer to that track than to dramamine, that's for sure.

>a really good groove/chord progression

yeah, like trapeze swinger or Home or something. if you get in the pocket you can go for days.

>>61990874
i need to hear more talk talk. wasn't stunned by laughing stock desu but you know that already. RHP is a constant presence in my life, and they do long tracks really well. I'll relisten to colourful hill when Tallahassee finishes. i don't know the third one at all. i suppose i should listen to it.

it's so hard to do cohesive right. it's like an EP inside a larger album. it's like the great red spot on jupiter.

i'm working with a central pair of characters and i'm analyzing their relationship. everything revolves around that.

Nuno Canavarro - Plux Quba (1988)
>tape music, electroacoustic

Delicate, childish, and innocent, with a kind of distorted human element that grounds the whole thing. Starts off kinda slow and shockingly dissonant, but it eventually works itself into a really childish and chilled-out groove that I like a whole bunch. "Bruma" sounds so much like "Dire, Dire Docks" from the Super Mario 64 soundtrack I actually thought it was a sample until I realized that this came out 8 years before that game. Takes me back to a comfily nostalgic place.

for real though the structure is currently undecided because i keep rewriting it. it's got a sort of circular structure atm, four central movements, begins and ends on the same coda. still debating on how "huge" it's gonna get. it will have multiple sections for sure but it won't be endlessly hopping around. i prefer little splinters of reprises as opposed to new ideas completely. i'm crazy frugal as a writer.

oh cool i like gifts.
also my favorite 9+ minute song is The Horrible Fanfare/Landslide/Exoskeleton by Beck. some people say it's cheating, but they just flow so fucking well together. you can't hear one without the other.
other favorites are The Sun from Mount Eerie and It Was a Dark and Stormy Night by Nicolas Collins. the second one's pretty avant tho.

Bel Air is a good example for a longer song, it keeps its core around enough to be considered a singular piece and not just stuff piled together and given a longer running time, while also not being a bore. It has progression through a couple of motifs that doesn't feel disjointed or like a suite.

The 11 minutes opener didn't move me at all; the other five tracks are really good. I feel like this album explores the Ape sound from a more industrial-rooted angle. Just like on Ape, I still feel like some of the synths sound tacky and, just like on that one, Coil try to beat you over the head with muh ritualism.
I guess my love-hate relationship with Coil's signature sound is the main thing that keeps me from falling head over heels for this album, but it's still a very enjoyable piece.

back from food.

The Information by Beck

songwriting is okay but whoever produced and mixed the record needs to find a new line of work. Yeah, beck's talented and he went some interesting places, but I think this might be one of the worst produced albums i've ever heard in my life. everything is brought to the front and just fucking hammers your ears into oblivion. there's absolutely no finesse to it. aside from basic panning, it's like it wasn't mixed or mastered at all. i almost couldn't finish it to be honest. it just made me miserable. i'd love to see these songs performed live, but the production style not only made them all sound the same, but made them sound bad.

more subjectively, i feel like the record went way too broad on musical styles. it didn't seem like a synthesis, but a scrap heap. nothing stays long enough to have any resonance, and I've never been a fan of Beck's vocals. i caught some of the threads that guided the album but the connections seemed half-hearted. pretty much every time Beck presents an idea, it's either too half-baked or too poorly-managed to be taken seriously. i just couldn't buy into any of it. it was like i was listening to the same baby's-first-studio-recording 17 times in a row, when one is already too much. it lasted forever and i can't say i enjoyed any of it.

Dark Star and No Complaints were *okay* (though the production was still terrible). everything else was forgettable and lacked any depth from a musical perspective. and i can't stress enough how shitty the production is. jesus. it's just gross.

GFR, you know i love you and you know i have massive respect for your taste in music, but this is one of the worst albums I've ever heard.

1/10.

untrue. when indie rock fucks up, it usually strays too far in the other direction--it tries too hard to be dynamic and weird. pop, on the other hand, exists solely to be catchy, profitable, and primally evocative, which, if you're upfront about it, is completely fine.

Near Unison is boring as hell. They were trying to do this whole minimal thing with the songwriting, but the only thing minimal here that they pulled off was my enjoyment. I don't even remember any of the track's names.

Deserter's Songs had some great songs, but as a whole the album could have took more risks. The songwriting just felt a bit flat in alot of places. The Funny Bird is where it's at.

Kind of Blue meanders pointlessly. Yes I said it. I just failed to pick out anything special or noteworthy about the melodies on this album. It's obvious that Kind of Blue relies on the vibe it gives off. Unfortunately I never picked up on it. No favorite track.

Exploded Drawing is a like a very exquisite and thoughtful puzzle, only shmushed and forced into a picture that is barely unrecognizable. Each piece of this album is very well done, but the LP as a whole is put together very messily. Even the songs themselves have transitions that are about as eloquent as a running elephant. Best Track: Fast Canoe (dat riff)

Weasels... Flesh is great. The free jazz is very much free, but there is an undeniable ear for composition and pacing to be found throughout the album. And there's some blues thrown in there as well because why the fuck not. Directly From My Heart To You takes it.

Undertale

The condescending patricians loom above you, they fill you with determination.

( ) Pan
(X) Do Not Pan

Determination or Fallen Down.

The Image Has Cracked is alot of fun. This is far from your thinking man's post-punk album (which isn't really a flaw). It's just a few fast, hard hitting, and obtuse 70's punk tracks that are just dying to abuse your speakers for 40 minutes. Severely underrated. The fact that RYM pans this then goes on to praise The Clash or Sex Pistols just makes me want to petrol bomb something important. Can't even decide on a favorite track.

De La Soul - 3 Feet High & Rising (like Tribe but more colorful and positive-minded)
Eric B & Rakim - Paid in Full (like Public Enemy with more clear focus on turntablism + a more skilled MC)
GZA - Liquid Swords (honestly, fuck Illmatic)
Outkast - Aquemini (like idk, it's good, and part of the genre canon pre-2000 so it fits?)

Jack Rose - Kensington Blues (2005)
>american primitivism

Rose certainly bit Fahey a little bit too hard, but Fahey's sound is literally my musical platonic ideal, so I can't complain too much. Rose was an absolute God on the guitar, the absolute skill he displays on the bookend tracks puts most "guitar gods" to shame, he's so good. But once again, Rose really needed to find his own voice and not just imitate his inspiration. His interpretation of Fahey's "Sunflower River Blues" does little to improve on Fahey's tune, and every track here really does sound like something off of Fare Forward Voyagers, but not as good. Still, what a shame that this guy passed. Absolutely the shining figure of the small 2000s primitivism revival. Would've loved to see the things he could do with his massive talent (oh wait, Pelt. yeah)

enter the wu-tang, madvillainy, and ATLiens are probably the best 'essentials', imo.

>like Public Enemy with more clear focus on turntablism + a more skilled MC
yea but much less creative sampling. rakim is probably better but the contrast between flav and d is another selling point in that department

it comes down to whether you want to hear one very skilled mc across an entire album (dj breaks permitted or one pretty skilled mc and his less interesting comic foil.

Continuing my Zappa fuckery.

I just realized that a new Zappa album was released in December (just after I decided I was going to do this). Maybe it'll be good? It's an orchestral version of 200 Motels, which I happen to think is a very underrated album.

Joe's Domage contains recordings from the Waka/Jawaka sessions. It's literally just an hour of tuning and surface noise. It baffles me that they could release this, but it has a few alright moments.

Buffalo was another unnecessarily long concert with otherwise a few decent parts. Nothing much of substance here.

Congress Shall Make No Law...is a good visualization of what exactly Zappa was going through and thinking during the 80s as his albums as well as those albums by artists around him were getting screwed by the religious right. If you're interested in what Zappa has to say about government and how it relates to music, give this a try. Otherwise, it totally fails as an album, but I can at least see why its release was justified.

Roxy by Proxy was fucking fantastic. Almost as good as the original Roxy & Elsewhere. Has the original songs of the Roxy live album but with a few extras of my favorites not on that album such as the Dog Breath Variations transitioning into Uncle Meat, RDNZL, and a finale that mixes King Kong, Chunga's Revenge, and Mr. Green Genes. If you like Zappa's live stuff, Roxy & Elsewhere, or Zappa in general, this is a fantastic album.

I would also recommend Roxy the Movie/Roxy the Soundtrack which just came out this year with a video of the Roxy performance. Though not on the Zappa family trust official numbered releases, it's still one of my favorite Zappa outputs.

This fucking dispersion of ratings is making me actually laugh out loud. I was expecting these 2s and 3s, but certainly no 8s or 9s.

Zappa has to be one of the most well-versed artists ever. The amount of versatile and eclectic shit in his catalog is insane. It's extremely varied not just in style and genre, but the actual quality is all over the place too.
