/mu/ when did you realise pop was a legitimate genre and hating it needlessly was just stupid.
Right about here.

Grimes almost managed to convince me otherwise, but luckily there are plenty of pop music masterpieces I could fall back on
When p4k talked about poptimism and started taking pop music more seriously
When I was like twelve and heard love story

>pop is a legitimate genre
>only examples of good pop albums are those that thoroughly go against the classical definitions of pop
prog-pop, post-pop, experimental-pop are all fine. But pop music, as defined as:
>emphasizing craftsmanship over artistry
>using dancing-oriented rythems
>thirty two bar verse-chorus form
>focus on catchy hooks and contrasting chorus
>simplistic melodies and beats
>limited harmonic accompaniment
>simplistic tonalities
>romantically themed lyrics
Meeting these criteria, as the absolute most of pop music does, would make even the greatest tracks in the history of pop-esque music entirely terrible.
Strip away everything that experimental from 'Pull Out the Pin' and you got yourself a pop song, a terrible one.

Do you think any rock music that follows the basic rock and roll formula is actually good.
>>61978448
When i realized that Britney Spears' "Toxic" is a really nice track. I really hate the performance from Britney herself, but maaan, that song actually has potential if it was produced/performed by someone else!
Pop is obviously legitimate genre but that doesn't mean all pop music is good. I think you're still learning that there only exist three major genres of music (pop, folk, and art). Everything else is an extension.
Grimes is not particularly interesting or creative pop music by the way

Absolutely not.
Music that adheres to normative formulation is at best mindlessly entertaining.

When did you realize that poptimism died in 2013 and nobody thinks you're transgressive for pretending to like Katy Perry?

You know that a lot of people grow out of this phase around 20 right? There's nothing wrong with enjoying happy music that makes people dance without profound complexity.
>>61978684
That's just manufactured chart pop made for the sole purpose of commercial success. There's a lot more to the pop genre than just it's most successful aspect.
