Hey /mu/, I've been reading into sub-genres of rock, metal, and hip hop and have found that certain genres have a strangely strong regional scene. For example, New Orleans has a pretty strong Sludge Metal scene and Providence has a reasonably prevalent Noise rock scene, The PNW had grunge. And of course, Atlanta has quite a bit of trap. Can anyone think of any other genres with specific ties to cities or areas?

I think it's the easiest to see in hip-hop.
NY = grimy, gritty, "hard" rap
L.A. = g-funk
Atlanta = trap
Chicago = jazzy rap
Seattle = grunge rap (and Macklemore)
Houston = lean music, but calmer than trap
Detroit = J-Dilla

That was pretty cool but they seem to take a ton of influence from Nirvana, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I love Nirvana, but it seems like something that's already been done. Still interested to see what directions the band will take an whether or not they develop their own sound. Thanks for sharing!

yeah, thought the same. Im just excited to see grunge bands, good or not, because as the genre gets more established again, we might actually see a GOOD grunge band in 2016

London has grime (rap), which has influenced a lot of Kanye's most recent work. Also the home of dubstep, which was regional from about '98 until about '09 or whenever shit took off in the US.

There's a slightly less strong one in Boston. Kayo Dot is the most notable thing to come out of it, but it still rages among the Berkeley kids. MA has a lot of scenes, actually. Boston has and "incredible" hardcore scene, meaning its lively and well-populated but also incestuous and boring. And of course the whole Slaughter of the Soul rip-off metalcore scene in the Springfield area.
