How important do you think the difference between a tube amp and a good solidstate/modeling rig are? I was in a debate with my friend. He said the differences are so little and not perceivable by audiences. I told him that the differences come mostly in how much control the player has over the tone just by how they choose to attack the string, a tube amp gives a player much more dynamic range

Well it's cool that you already were willing to take a side and make those claims without knowing if they were true. Tubes vs SS is all about distortion. A "really good solid state" Is going to be different from a modeling amp because it may not be imitating a tube amp. Here's a Wikipedia arrival on the distortion harmonics clipping issue, the primary difference between SS and tube. It is possible for a modeling amp to imitate this completely. A modeling amp does sound exactly like a tube amp, though maybe not YOUR tube amp.

SS doesn't change anything on the dynamics, the Roland Jazz Chorus is still used in a lot of places despite it being SS. A lot of bass amps are also solid state, despite bassists using more dynamics in their playstyle when compared to guitarists.
Modelling is another story though, you really need to get the high end stuff if you want to sound like an actual amp live.

I had a 5150 with original tubes that I sold to a friend for an unreasonably low price as a favor a year or two ago, and now I regret it. I have a twin reverb and love it, but I miss having something with gain. I don't have the money to drop on another head atm, and I doubt the twin would take distortion pedals well but idk. Dv Mark has some nice new solid state amps. Roland Cube is good. Could consider getting an older LAB Series L5/L7/L9 if you want something that'll last you and has a lot of power as well. Same goes for the Roland Jazz Chorus of course, but I personally think LAB Series stuff is superior.

It only sounds that way if you put 10s on it, because ALL acoustics sound that way with 10s on them.
Dreadnought-sized acoustics were designed in the 1930s to sound their best when strung with the medium-gauge strings of the era, which are 13s. Put some of those on and your acoustic guitar will sound right (and LOUD-strum hard on it and people won't want to be directly in front of your guitar).

Typically, bolt-on gives the worst fret access. There are exceptions, like the Ibanez All-Access Neck Joint, for example. If you want fret access, neck through is unbeatable.

Out of the box, a nice laminate guitar (of which there are maybe 3) will sound maybe as okay as a entry level solidtop (Yamaha makes some for $200~, or you can pickup a GS mini for $300 used). With time, however, the real wood will change with more play, whereas the laminate won't. After 5 years, there will be a hell of a difference. Laminate guitars cannot be taken seriously and should only be used as instructional tools. Any guitar that will be played to sound good needs at least a solid top.

Just buy a Behringer MIDI controller. You get a LOT more DSP power in the rack unit and it'll take any MIDI controller. The main advantage to the MFC unit is the display and FAS-Link.

Most audiences won't matter but I find a better live tone makes me feel better and play better. As for feel, top end modellers through tube power amps feel very similar. The only really obvious give a way when you're playing them is the attack is unnaturally immediate.
I'd equate it to the feel of an 8100 for example and to be honest, for low tuned metal I prefer it over all but one of my amplifiers.

Daddarios chromes for me. After messing around with the round wounds some more I'm now back to normal, they're interesting and probably great for metal and certain kinds of rock, but not for me in the end. I'll keep them on for a few more days and have a bit of fun but after that it's back to flat wounds for me. That mellow tone and thumping low end is just too good.

There is a right way and a wrong way when it comes technique. If you practice bad technique, it will ultimately be harder to play the instrument, and you'll have to unlearn your bad habits in order to improve. You can even wind up with RSI. Get a few lessons to start off, just to make sure you don't go down the wrong path.

Although I'm not disagreeing with you completely and I can read music/was a session muso/composer for a while, if he just wants to play music in a band or something of the like there's nothing wrong with that, some of the most famous musicians of our time probably couldn't read a note of sheet music, it isn't mandatory to learn, only if you want to excel at your instrument, it's a lot of time to invest in something but if you're just playing 4 chord indie rock with a ton of delay on your guitars it's a bit redundant to know.

Just the general category overdrive, distortion, and fuzzes fall into
Distortion and Overdrive are extremely similar in some case and can be mixed up person to person. One's idea of heavy overdrive could be anothers idea of mild distortion, it's a tough call but most pedals are sorted into that category by how much gain they have on tap. Low to medium gain, it's most likely an overdrive (tubescreamers and Klon style pedals are in this category) and distortions are usually pedals with medium to high/borderline fuzzy gain like ProCo Rats

They're all just different names for the same thing. All they do is add gain to your signal to make it more distorted. The names "overdrive" "distortion" "fuzz" etc, are for how they distort your signal. Overdrive tends to be milder distortion so they tend to keep more of your guitar's sound. If you care, they tend to have what is called "asymmetrical clipping" to make them sound more like toobampz. Fuzz is on the more extreme side of distortion adding lots of gain to produce "square wave clipping" to give a more intense sound.
Some overdrives can do what some distortion pedals do and vice versa. Some distortion pedals are acually fuzz pedals. Either way, they all do the same thing. They're just names people like to throw around.

They all do the same thing but except gain may refer to a simple clean signal boost, or it may just be another distortion. Distortion is the general term, more specific(though ill-defined) terms are overdrive(tube-like distortion) and fuzz(goes to 10 and beyond). However you will also see these terms mixed up all over the place. The thing to keep in mind is it's all marketing, and the name doesn't really tell you anything.

Planning on doing some ambient type stuff on bass, I don't own a delay pedal but I want something that can handle the low frequencies.
I'm into playing mostly death\thrash\black metal, so I naturally gravitate towards brands like B.C. Rich, Jackson, Dean, Ibanez, ESP, etc. I would recommend players of any genre check out Chapman Guitars for sure.
