Again, does anyone have any experience with Vintage guitars? They seem like a good alternative to Epiphone or Squier in terms of budget gear.
>>
Friendly reminder that any acoustic under $500 dollars is a toy and you cannot call yourself a guitarist if you play one.
>>
>>61964618
you probably buy Taylors or Gibsons because dad told you so

>>61964618

The price of your guitar doesn't measure your skill level.

Really though? I've been looking into getting an acoustic. Is a solid top essential for a decent acoustic?

I'm not a fan of laminate tops, but you can get solid tops for less than 500. Check out the Seagull S6

I don't know if I can recommend Lakland Skylines anymore.

My Schecter is like $300 to $400 less on the used market and it's pretty much on par quality wise.

How important do you think the difference between a tube amp and a good solidstate/modeling rig are? I was in a debate with my friend. He said the differences are so little and not perceivable by audiences. I told him that the differences come mostly in how much control the player has over the tone just by how they choose to attack the string, a tube amp gives a player much more dynamic range
>>
>>61965334
>I play by ear!

Unacceptable for any kind of musician.

>I make electronic music!

You couldn't find any actual problems with this even if you tried to save face.

Music creators don't need to read music. This is 2016.

Reading music is only useful to reproducers. People with no agency or future. Are you a reproducer?

>>
>>61965595
Well it's cool that you already were willing to take a side and make those claims without knowing if they were true. Tubes vs SS is all about distortion. A "really good solid state" Is going to be different from a modeling amp because it may not be imitating a tube amp. Here's a Wikipedia arrival on the distortion harmonics clipping issue, the primary difference between SS and tube. It is possible for a modeling amp to imitate this completely. A modeling amp does sound exactly like a tube amp, though maybe not YOUR tube amp.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tube_sound
See harmonic content.
>>
>>61965609
It's always good to somewhat know how to play by ear, especially when jamming.
Knowing how to read sheet music is also useful since you can just rearrenge notes on the fretboard.

>>61965595
SS doesn't change anything on the dynamics, the Roland Jazz Chorus is still used in a lot of places despite it being SS. A lot of bass amps are also solid state, despite bassists using more dynamics in their playstyle when compared to guitarists.
Modelling is another story though, you really need to get the high end stuff if you want to sound like an actual amp live.
>>
>>61965609
what do you mean playing by ear is unacceptable?

I had a 5150 with original tubes that I sold to a friend for an unreasonably low price as a favor a year or two ago, and now I regret it. I have a twin reverb and love it, but I miss having something with gain. I don't have the money to drop on another head atm, and I doubt the twin would take distortion pedals well but idk. Any ideas, or should I just start saving for a new head? I'm not really that knowledgeable with gear so I thought I'd ask here.

Dv Mark has some nice new solid state amps. Roland Cube is good. Could consider getting an older LAB Series L5/L7/L9 if you want something that'll last you and has a lot of power as well. Same goes for the Roland Jazz Chorus of course, but I personally think LAB Series stuff is superior.

Dv Mark stuff is the ''DV Little Jazz'' and a bigger variant.

Slow it down, practise to a metronome.

10-20 minutes of scales to a metronome will be very useful as well.

Seriously, do you think people who are good at guitar could play hard songs when they were starting out? No, they sucked at first. Either believe you can get good and take steps to do so, or sell your guitars and get a new hobby.
>>
Hey friends, I just picked up guitar a few days ago, and have been practicing on an acoustic guitar I got, and I've been looking forward to getting an electric guitar.

Is there any major differences in playing between the two besides needing an amp for an electric? Is one easier to finger than the other?
>>
>>61968379
I think there's less string tension on an electric, so it would be easier to play.
>>
>>61968379
Electric is much easier.
>>
>>61964955
No
I have an old red label Yamaha that has a laminate top. It sounds fantastic, especially with 12s or 13s on it.
>>
>>61965278
No, it isn't.
It only sounds that way if you put 10s on it, because ALL acoustics sound that way with 10s on them.
Dreadnought-sized acoustics were designed in the 1930s to sound their best when strung with the medium-gauge strings of the era, which are 13s. Put some of those on and your acoustic guitar will sound right (and LOUD-strum hard on it and people won't want to be directly in front of your guitar).
>>
Can I play the fender mustang v2 III at bedroom level volume decently?
>>
>>61969558

>>
>>61965595
Your friend is more right than you know, but mostly because audiences don't care.
All they want is the music to sound good, that's it. They could give two shits about the tube/SS/modeling debate and whether the guy is playing a Strat, Les Paul, or even a shitty knockoff guitar.

I like tube amps myself because they generally are lower distortion, and the natural compression is very musical to my ears.

Having a solid top doesn't mean anything if it's built shitty, and lots of those $200 guitars are. Laminate sounds just as good as a solid top, provided the build quality is comparable.
It's just that most laminate top acoustics were shit-tier, so they sound like it.

>Laminate sounds just as good as a solid top

Out of the box, a nice laminate guitar (of which there are maybe 3) will sound maybe as okay as a entry level solidtop (Yamaha makes some for $200~, or you can pickup a GS mini for $300 used). With time, however, the real wood will change with more play, whereas the laminate won't. After 5 years, there will be a hell of a difference. Laminate guitars cannot be taken seriously and should only be used as instructional tools. Any guitar that will be played to sound good needs at least a solid top.

Sup guys

So im going to try and build my own guitar over the spring. Does anyone have any pickup recommendations? i want something vintage sounding that focuses on clarity and that will play metal

Thanks

Hopefully you guys can help me out.

I'm new to the guitar world, and I'm dead set on the Epiphone Les Paul Standard, how much should I buy for it used? I see the price for it in the 300-350 range (used).

Also what's a good amp that would go with this?

Thanks!

I'm super lazy, having it in the case always would make it too much work to quickly grab it whenever I have free time

>>61972539
For amps, maybe like a Fender Mustang II (v2), then connect that guy to your computer, and that would give you a bunch of different sounds to play around with
>>
>>61972594
I saw some videos of it awhile ago and just figured it would be like 500, and even then thats crazy. Who would actually pay money that much for that, I just feel you would be mocked by other people on stage

haggle, it's used. Also, why so dead set? There's agile for that price...

Just buy a Behringer MIDI controller. You get a LOT more DSP power in the rack unit and it'll take any MIDI controller. The main advantage to the MFC unit is the display and FAS-Link.

>>61965595
Most audiences won't matter but I find a better live tone makes me feel better and play better. As for feel, top end modellers through tube power amps feel very similar. The only really obvious give a way when you're playing them is the attack is unnaturally immediate.

I'd equate it to the feel of an 8100 for example and to be honest, for low tuned metal I prefer it over all but one of my amplifiers.

consider "restoring" a new cheap bass. There's a few companies that make interesting shaped basses, or just unusual feature/finish combinations, because they make crap guitars and have to fool people. But I've always wanted to get a crappy Chinese Rickenbacker fake to fix up and do crazy shit to.
>>
What should I do in terms of amps, pedals, etc if I want a high gain balls to the wall tone?

something along the lines of van halen mixed with early pantera.
>>
>>61978253
I know that I could do that, but I kinda just want something really old from the 70s that looks fucked up and then transform it into something nice, it's not logical but that has a really great appeal to me somehow. Or a good bass from the 90s for cheap, I'd take that as well honestly.
>>
>>61976038
There is a right way and a wrong way when it comes technique. If you practice bad technique, it will ultimately be harder to play the instrument, and you'll have to unlearn your bad habits in order to improve. You can even wind up with RSI. Get a few lessons to start off, just to make sure you don't go down the wrong path.

If you can't read you can't:
- be a session musician

>>
>>61978559
Although I'm not disagreeing with you completely and I can read music/was a session muso/composer for a while, if he just wants to play music in a band or something of the like there's nothing wrong with that, some of the most famous musicians of our time probably couldn't read a note of sheet music, it isn't mandatory to learn, only if you want to excel at your instrument, it's a lot of time to invest in something but if you're just playing 4 chord indie rock with a ton of delay on your guitars it's a bit redundant to know.

>>61971566

>Overdrive
Mild gain/grit
>Distortion
Heavier gain
>Gain
Just the general category overdrive, distortion, and fuzzes fall into
Distortion and Overdrive are extremely similar in some case and can be mixed up person to person. One's idea of heavy overdrive could be anothers idea of mild distortion, it's a tough call but most pedals are sorted into that category by how much gain they have on tap. Low to medium gain, it's most likely an overdrive (tubescreamers and Klon style pedals are in this category) and distortions are usually pedals with medium to high/borderline fuzzy gain like ProCo Rats
>>
>>61978833
from memory dave grohl can't read or write music. has to communicate every idea through playing it.
>>
>>61978881
They're all just different names for the same thing. All they do is add gain to your signal to make it more distorted. The names "overdrive" "distortion" "fuzz" etc, are for how they distort your signal. Overdrive tends to be milder distortion so they tend to keep more of your guitar's sound. If you care, they tend to have what is called "asymmetrical clipping" to make them sound more like toobampz. Fuzz is on the more extreme side of distortion adding lots of gain to produce "square wave clipping" to give a more intense sound.

Some overdrives can do what some distortion pedals do and vice versa. Some distortion pedals are acually fuzz pedals. Either way, they all do the same thing. They're just names people like to throw around.
>>
>>61978881
They all do the same thing but except gain may refer to a simple clean signal boost, or it may just be another distortion. Distortion is the general term, more specific(though ill-defined) terms are overdrive(tube-like distortion) and fuzz(goes to 10 and beyond). However you will also see these terms mixed up all over the place. The thing to keep in mind is it's all marketing, and the name doesn't really tell you anything.
