My impression of Metheny and Pastorius has always been that they are fantastic musicians who often opt to play pretty shit music. I got this on the recommendation of a friend but I didn't have really high hopes for it but Goddamn, this is better than anything I've ever heard either of them or Bob Moses play. Except maybe for Metheny's collab with Ornette Coleman.
They're still playing fusion but the chemistry between them, the lengths they go to outperforming each other and the variety in how they play together makes for a really enjoyable listen.

definitely a high point for Metheny, although I could see a case being made for the recent Kin (←→) being the best Metheny album if you cut all the crap out (crap being Adagia and everything after the title track)

It had it's moments but I don't think it's consistently enjoyable as an album. I've only heard it twice but I loved every single track on Bright Size Life.
You can hear bits of Jaco's phrasing and melodic styles come through but he is a lot more tasteful and careful about his playing. It's weird hearing him follow the other two so closely because I'm used to hearing him charge ahead in the lead. He's actually really incredible at comping when he puts his mind to it.
