Is there such a thing as underrated progressive rock? Seems like prog fans throw around 10s more than anyone else.

Yes - Drama
Grateful Dead - American Beauty

That's only on rym; rym specializes in metal and prog more than any other genres. Go to any other community and prog will be as fairly rated as any other genre

Btw Sumut by Sume is some underrated progressive rock.

There's some, but it's mostly either extremely derivative of English prog (Starcastle) or just kind of questionable in general (Kansas). Rush may be the only great North American prog band from the 70s.

The swedish prog (progressive) scene is very good, but I haven't listened to enough to give solid recs. If you're interested, try fläsket brinner, bo hansson, and samla mammas manna.
That höstsonaten album is the only one i've heard. People here love the band so I'm sure they have more exiting stuff in the discography.
Also devil doll is ok. Overrated by those who've heard it, but still a very unique and good band.

Ommadawn is great.

It was because Mike Oldfield went through that whole "rebirth" bullshit and turned into a pop artist.

Why is pop always the fate of prog rock bands?

Anima Latina by Lucio Battisti

Definitely underrated for some reasons:
1) it's italian
2) even italians ignore that Battisti was into progressive in the mid-70's
3) latin prog rock, a very specific sub-genre
4) not easy listening (compared to other prog works in the same period)

In my opinion, it's a great work and it's as good as (if not even better than) the best albums of the most famous prog bands in the early 70's
>>
>>61954503
Yeah you're right. I am a big Peter Gabriel fan but he had his pop phase to made his money before he came back to prog. Every time I hear Solisbury Hill I die a little inside. At least he went back though.

Jose Cid is the folklore demigod of lunar/space portuguese rock

I'm PT myself, never really cared for José Cid, only knew him for sometimes singing a few radio rock songs on those Sunday afternoon programs.

Never knew he made god-tier prog in the 70s

This is the first time I've ever seen anyone other than myself post about either Birth Control or Beggars Opera on /mu/.

Also, Lucifer's Friend, particularly Banquet. It's kinda fusion-y. But progressive nonetheless.

Unsurprisingly noone has mentioned this album yet. It was produced in 1967 and it was a crucial work for the development of art rock.

José Cid / Quarteto 1111 made 3 Progressive Rock Albums in the 70s when he was young, which were thoroughly ignored by everyone, so he just stopped doing them and become a pop singer. Don't even bother looking up his discography, you'll be thoroughly disappointed.

If you want to complete his collection the last piece of Prog Rock he ever did was this:
