when CC came into their own, Vile/Eaten/Tomb, nothing with the musicianship and production value was playing anything nearly as brutal, it was just pure evil madness, the only musicians that were playing similar style were either slower (bolt thrower), faster but less technical (deicide), or were not a low tuned and didnt follow the same from beyond style (thrash metal)
They are cheesy as all fuck now, I agree, but they used to blow your dick right the fuck off ( if you hadn't already listened to grindcore)
IMO, it really wasn't until heartwork that dm really started to grow in popularity and the rise of much bigger bands came to be

What did you think of Kill? I thought it was fucking awesome, but then again there I was, listening to my first CC album. I relistened and it still seemed pretty sweet. These days I'm a regular listener of all types of death metal and metal in general, so I'm not sure if it's nostalgia goggles or if there's really somethong there.

Conversely, you don't need a fast section in a funeral doom track. I don't think you NEED a variety of textures in an album as long as what's written is enjoyable.
