In Texas, being in the top 10% of your high school class got your automatic admission into certain state colleges. This is another form of affirmative action that I think is pretty good - LaDyrell from the shitty high school on the east side who studied his ass off isn't nearly as well off as Sarah whose mom bought her adderall and has an army of tutors waiting for her at home but they both get the same access to upper level universities as a result of hard work.
However, that system is exploited by parents who will send their special private school snowflakes to the shitty schools so they can get valedictorian without even making an effort.
