Now that the dust has settled, what was the objectively best Bowie album?

Heroes > Outside > Low > Scary Monsters > Blackstar > Station to Station > Ziggy > Hunky Dory > Lodger > Young Americans > Diamond Dogs > Aladdin Sane

If I had switched scary monsters and Ziggy you'd agree with it.

Ziggy is the most enjoyable listen.

Low is his best artistically.

Scary Monsters is the pinnacle of both is writing and production. In fact, it's the best production of any album ever.

Young Americans

It's so fucking underrated. Slow songs of romantic passion, Can You Hear Me telling a beautiful story of love and heartache.

Win is the smoothest, sweetest song in existence. It was Bowies' favourite song of his...

All the outtakes are incredible too, and It's Gonna Be Me... Gorgeous

oh, I forgot Low
it's better than Young Americans only because of the ambient side Eno worked up there (and if it was an actual EP instead of a b-side I'd give it a 5/5)

>it's better than Young Americans only because of the ambient side Eno worked up there (and if it was an actual EP instead of a b-side I'd give it a 5/5)
What do you have against side 1? It's the stronger side, I'd say.
>>
>>61886044
I always found that album a bore
>>
>>61886215
I've tried listening several times, but I can't enjoy the absurdity/irony of those tunes
to me it sounds like what 19 years old Bowie would have done with his debut album, but using synthetizers instead of a backing baroque band

You can't possibly be serious.
>absurdity/irony
Only 5 of them have lyrics, and there's very little that's ironic or absurd about them. Breaking glass is maybe the most absurd lyrically.

>>
>>61886306
okay, I'm not nearly close to know the standard terminology, but I do know what I don't like when I listen to What in the World, and I think I don't even need to explain what it is.

Sound and Vision is an alright track, but he seriously pulled nothing out of it; no emotion, no eerie feeling, no nothing.

Speed of Life sounds like an instrumental track that any Hard Rock band could pull, except it has more synthetizer soloing instead of a guitar soloing

Breaking Glass has no hook to it, nothing that makes it stand out so you remember how it sounds.
It's not bad at all, but I keep forgetting it

Sound and Vision is actually a nice track, I like it
Always Crashing in the Same Car sounds really really similar to it, but in a different rhythm, slower and therefore a little bit dragging

Be My Wife is uhh... I'm not sure how to put it in words, but it has a weird sequence that makes it weary to listen to. "Sometimes you-get-so-lonely / Sometimes you-get-nowhere / I've-lived all over-the-world", something among these lines makes it really a chore, it feels like Bowie's vocal delivery here is almost robotical and has little actual Bowie touch to it.

A New Career in a New Town is alright, I don't have anything to say about it.

Low

>I think I don't even need to explain what it is.
You do if you want me to know what it is, because I have no idea.

>that any Hard Rock band could pull
But it's not hard rock?

>Breaking Glass has no hook to it
It literally does. Funny enough, it's right after Bowie says LISTEN
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgdCIAEupNI
Never mind the bluesy guitar intro with the trashy snare.

>A New Career in a New Town is alright
Nothing to say at all? The harmonica doesn't grab you? The piano?

>Sound and Vision is an alright track, but he seriously pulled nothing out of it; no emotion, no eerie feeling, no nothing.
>Sound and Vision is actually a nice track, I like it

Of his golden years;

Diamond Dogs = Station to Station > Low = Young Americans > Lodger = "Heroes" > Aladdin Sane > Ziggy Stardust = Hunky Dory > Scary Monsters > Let's Dance > The Man Who Sold the World > Space Oddity

That's personal, but even still that's me banging it out to post it on 4chan, and barely even reflects my enjoyment of it all. I love MWSTW, anyhow. Space oddity has some great stuff, too. Young Americans would be in my top three with how much I've listened to it.

Basically, everyone's all about the Berlin trilogy. My favorite period, my favorite three by far, and the three that came sequentially, were Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, and Station to Station. I could describe why, but yeah. Three of his best by far, such a great period.

>>61886147
Absolutely yes. That's officially the first time I've heard someone else talk about it before I brought it up. Absolutely amazing song, so beautifully written; captures a form of emotion that I never see examined or sung anywhere, but which I've known well. Sounds so fucking sexy, too. It was the song that finally made me go look up David Bowie way back before I realized how much I'd listened to him without even knowing.

Nah, you're wrong. I listen to them, we're talking studio. If we look at them all, including Stage and the Ziggy soundtrack, the best is actually, clearly, Live at Nassau Coliseum '76, from the special edition of Station to Station.

Fucking seriously. I love David Live and its jazzy feel, and how well its setlist plays. However, Nassau was something else. Not only did it have a pretty damn close soundtrack, it was so much faster and well-tuned, so emotional yet perfect. He was at the absolute fucking top of his live performance game, so much so that I think he only caught back up to that standard by Reality. It's that great.

It's that Thin White Duke, man.

Hmm, didn't know Live at Nassau, great thanks! I wonder if it can beat Sweet Thing on David Live though. Also, I am mostly talking about the first half of David Live. Not really a fan of the second half, though the first half is fucking great.
>>
>>61882884
I love Ziggy Stardust. Its probably my favorite Bowie

I think it does, and that's coming from someone with Diamond Dogs as a favorite album, the Sweet Thing suite a favorite song, and a love for David Live despite certain flaws.

Basically, Nassau is very similar, but more well-tuned, more hard and funky than jazzy, and with a lot of the fat trimmed, despite my love for some of that extra fat. It's the top of his game. Best version of Stay, too. Definitely worth the time.
