How closely related are shoegaze and ambient and do you think Loveless-style gaze could not have existed with out ambient having been established long before it?
I mean ambient and shoegaze both generally have a focus on atmosphere but idk if shields was thinking about some music for airports type shit when making loveless. he was for sure really into the JAMC and Dinosaur Jr.
My guess is that shoegaze didn't start out with the sort of relation it has to ambient stuff that it does now. It always utilized those sorts of sounds though.
