If so what are your favorite songs?
>>
>>61873732
clap hands
>>
I like the one where he sounds like a retarded hobo.
>>
>>61873732
the opening song should be a showtune in an old cartoon disney movie
>>
>>61873969
When I sing it to my 8-month old son, he always gets a big smile on his face.
>>
>>61874032
don't you feel bad for using the term "chinamen"

also you have a son why are you on /mu/?
>>
>>61873969
Singapore is probably my favorite. But I do like the track raindogs a lot as well.
>>
Innocent when you dream (78)
Yesterday is Here
Earth Died Screaming
Time
I like a lot of his stuff but those are my favorites that I can think of
>>
Pretty good album, always strikes me as kindof trying-too-hard-to-be-deep, and also has Waits ever written a single song without using the word 'dream'?
Clap Hands, Diamonds & Gold, Time, Gun Street Girl and Downtown Train are all great songs.
>>
>>61873732
She Stole the Blush
Whistle Down the Wind
If I Have to Go
On the Road

He's probably my favorite musician and song writer.
>>
Underground. It's nothing like his other work, though.
>>
>>61873815
thats my favorite track too.
>>
>>61874980
I love that one
>>
I found a couple of tracks that don't sound like his usual work and real want to share them with someone. What're your opinions on these?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnRyF-nqgTo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xj_Zhztr6mg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhvT2sUyuNw
>>
>>61875067
thanks, I hadn't heard a couple of those. Orphans is pretty great, I wish it was talked about more
>>
>>61874032
is it your son, or your wife's son?
>>
>>61873732
Hoist that rag is pretty great along with the rest of real gone. Its amazing how good he continues to be on his newer releases.
>>
Such a Scream
Who Are You
>>
I love Tom Waits. He's one of my very favorites.

Soldier's Things
Johnsburg, Illinois
Diamonds & Gold
Anywhere I Lay My Head
Drunk on the Moon
The Ghosts of Saturday Night
House Where Nobody Lives
Picture in a Frame
Chocolate Jesus
Cold Water
Semi Suite
I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You
The Piano Has Been Drinking

I guess those are my favorite songs.
>>
>>61875685
>Cold Water

goddamn I love that song

great to sing along to really loudly
>>
>>61875796
Me too, holy shit.
>>
>Someone turn the lights back on
>I'll love you till all time is gone
fuck
>>
>>61876373
Nobody does the feels better.
>>
>>61876606
He's one of the only musicians I know who got better after they were married and happy.
>>
Invitation to the Blues (has possibly my favourite lyric of all time)
Come on Up to the House
Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis
>>
I think Rain Dogs is the greatest achievement in music, period.

So yes.
>>
9th and Hennepin

I like to listen to it while smoking marlboro reds in the rain at midnight outside a dive bar in the slums of new york
>>
Rain Dogs is pretty great, but Nighthawks At The Diner is probably my favorite album.
>>
I always have a hard time picking between Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs. They're almost like parts one and two of the same album. I guess I'll go with SFT because it's a bit more heartfelt.
>>
>>61878202
I like Bone Machine the most. All of Orphans is a 10/10 though, and Alice is up there.
>>
>>61873732
to many favorite songs to name. but albums...
>heart of saturday night
>rain dogs
>swordfishtrombones
>blue valentine
>nighthawks
>bone machine
>black rider
>mule variations
>real gone
>blood money
>franks wild years
for sure there are more i love too, but these are the first to come to mind
>>
>>61878324
I tend to split his work up by decade. For the 70s my pick is THoSN, for the 80s it's SFT, 90s is Mule Variations, and the jury is still out on 00s. I guess it would be Alice.

My favorite of all is SFT though.

Maybe not my favorite, but The Ocean is one of the most soul-crushing songs I've heard.

Tom Traubert's Blues

genuinely makes me feel like shit every time t b h
>>
>>61873732
Every song off Swordfishtrombone is great (save Dave the Butcher)

Ol' 55 is his best early song

Rain Dogs is mad overrated tho, not even as good as Heart of a Saturday Night
>>
Mockingbird (early Tom)
>>
>>61880208
how can you possibly compare the two
>>
>>61873732
the original diamonds on my windshield
>>
>>61880867
because Rain Dogs is in the lower half of his discography
>>
>>61880867
Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs are practically parts one and two. They have very similar styles and they came out back to back.
>>
>>61880925
i mean sonically
>>
>>61880208
>>61881011
I totally misread that. Never mind. Either way Rain Dogs is still better than THoSN.
>>
>>61881011
but compare rain dogs to heart of saturday night? it's two completely different albums, there is no reason to compare the two. Besides, different eras of Tom as well. why would you compare Real Gone to Franks Wild Years. You may like one better than the other, but how would you compare the two?
>>
>>61881034
Yeah it's a weird comparison. I think more apt comparisons would be Closing Time/THoSN, SFT/RD, and Bone Machine/Mule Variations.
>>
>>61881125
exactly, with Tom Waits, it's easier to compare within eras as opposed to just album to album comparisons
>>
>>61873732
i like warren zevon better

you can't not like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJefPK_UkdM
>>
>>61873732
somewhere
lonely
ol'55
>>
>>61881372
i'm going to ask you the same question, how on earth do you compare the two. i mean, it's awesome, but why not compare him to like early springsteen. makes no sense to compare this to ANY of waits' music
>>
>>61881446
i got the two mixed up
>>
