reznor has announced more nin to come in 2016, any thoughts on what it might be? I'm banking on a world tour because yes, but hopefully a new cool album will see a release too

Thoughts?
>>
>>61849145
he's obviously going to continue down the drum pad-centric style of HM, i think. which im cool with.

knowing this guy, no two albums ever sound the same, not sure that it's a shoe-in for more drum pads

with_teeth, year zero, and the slip are very different albums? one is more rock, the other is more hip-hop, the latter is mostly industrial?

pretty psyched. Hesitation Marks grew on me a lot. Def. not my favorite NIN release, but still some good songs and interesting production. Thus far Trent's never let me down.

>>61849390
With Teeth and The Slip sound similar on some tracks. Year Zero was much more electronic. There's differences, but I see how they could be pretty similar. idk. Does it really matter?
>>
>>61849504
what I mean though is that we're safe to say the next release will not be a carbon-copy of HM, there will be a difference obviously

also top pic, will never tire of that meme

Trent Reznor is a better performer than producer. That's just me but unless we are getting a live tour I just couldn't care less about anything Ninny related.

>>
>>61850044
this is the stupidest thing I've heard all day

most of Trent's genius comes from what he can do with sampling and audio effects, not to mention looping and distortion.

idiot!
>>
>>61849362
its more because i think Trent recognizes that rawk is dead and nobody wants guitars, but ok. drum pads dont mean itll sound the same, so try reading again.

Sorta. He does have a lot of engineers that take out the guess work so he can just jam and they can do the less fun parts of mixing and constructing he doesn't want to do.

source: im the guy that leaked the NIN rehearsal footage that got VEVO worked up a couple years ago

I think it's for a similar reason why I feel the same about SRV.

>>61850399
I know this
>>
>>61850517

Trent writes and pieces together just about every song he's ever performed live. yes the technicians/engineers do the synth/sampling shit onstage but he already wrote it up during recording

the studio one feels so tightened up.
>>
>>61850744
ah ok I see what you mean with the live vs. studio version of copy of a, yeah I can agree with you there

but most of his 90s stuff were pretty much the same live as in studio, barring Hurt for obvious reasons
>>
>>61850794
I guess "sucks" is a bit too harsh for a lot of it anyway.
but live is usually preferable for me over the record version.

yeah I see what you mean now, I actually prefer the live version of Hurt to the studio one (but that might be because when Trent cries I fall apart)

> Thoughts?

As a big fan of NIN, I hope he makes an instrumental album. I felt that age is wearing on his vocal ability, and that his cringe tier lyrics are only going to hurt his music, not help at this point.
>>
>>61851293
>cringe tier lyrics
his early stuff was fine, but HM's "find my way" was pretty... eh, uninspired.

he does heaps of instrumental stuff tho, wouldn't be surprised if more than one track on the new album is instrumental
>>
>>61851384
ugh Find My Way might have been the weakest song on Hesitation Marks; such a letdown after the likes of Came Back Haunted and Copy Of A

That being said, it's rare that a NIN album has a blatantly weak song, here's hoping the next one continues that tradition
>>
>>61850577

>>
>>61851912
it came from the guy who was doing videography work for Reznoe to prep for the band touring. his job was to record everything, including rehearsals.

Reznor wasn't mad about it. the legal team was. he honestly didn't care this got out, or he hid his anger really well, which is a challenge for him (as evident in his angry dad tone during his verbal assault on the drummer for stopping the song)

The album wasn't in jeopardy.

the one cool thing that came from it was getting the with teeth soundboard recordings. i don't know when or where they were made, but they are all tagged as rehearsals as well and there's WAY more tracks than they'd normally do (to practice what fits for new setlist, etc)

NIN's GOAT. Spent the entire fall/winter of 1992-93 taking acid and rocking this album. One of the best Electronic albums ever made. Dark as it gets. Produced with COIL, Danny Hyde, J G Thirlwell/Foetus.

I grew up on NIN so I have a soft spot for Trent. I've seen NIN four times with my dad and always had a blast, they sound incredible thanks to Trent's austim for sound.

One time I sat with Bauhaus while watching NINs set. One of the coolest moments of my life.

PHM night have ripped off 80s industrial sound, but TDS? That was all Trent. Believe me, I've spent YEARS searching for something even remotely similar and have failed to find it.
His new stuff is actually good, by the way. Trent's skill ages like a fine wine. >>61854202

Heresy I get, but they're not that bad
>>
>>61854786
Heresy is blasphemous but not cringey, and eraser is one of trent's greatest tracks, the part where trent screams "kill me" while fading into pure noise is very cathartic and chilling, I get goosebumps
>>
>>61854846
"God is dead" was actually coined by Nietzche, don't blame Trent if it sounds cringe. He pretty much took the line from Thus Spake Zarathustra

>>
>>61854898
Eraser is god-tier (I'd argue Heresy is god-tier too (pun not intended) and what the fuck is cringey about the Eraser lyrics? Given its placement towards the end of TDS, it makes sense for the words/lines to become shorter and dissolve into "kill me". You gotta take it in album context
>>
>>61854909
Yeah, otherwise I'd be bitching about Annie coming out of nowhere.

>>61854972

That's why the PHM examples are worse.

>>
>>61854972
heresy is cringe due to the modern fedora tipper meme. For its time it was just blasphemous. If you want cringe look back to pretty hate machine. Somehow though as cheesy as the lyrics can be it feels very genuine.
>>
>>61855059
>>61855059
I don't think the I Do Not Want This line is cringey at all, never have either. Maybe the weakest lyric in the whole album, but not cringe-tier.

TWIG and KIWT's lyrics are objectively a lot worse than "don't you tell me how I feel". Doesn't mean I don't like the songs, I just find the lyrics weak.

What I mean by context of the album though is 1) the fact that TDS is a concept album and you have to look at those songs while keeping that in mind, and 2) PHM was the first thing Trent ever released. For a first effort it's pretty fucking amazing.

>ME: So are there a lot of orgies around the Reznor household?

TRENT: No, no, it's not a common situation. When I'm in a relationship that overpowers the desire to…these usually arise from casual situations, usually intoxicated situations. You wake up and think, "Okay, we just stepped through another portal…" (pause) I think about giving head though. I don't know why I'm saying this, but I think about that. I'd be good at giving head, because I know what… (laughs)…I mean, no one knows how to jack yourself off better than yourself, you know?

the pounding drums, straightforward rock song with a simple riff and a 2 chord chorus
>Letting You and You Know What You Are?
the heavier song on the album with a fast and very peculiar drum beat
>Discipline and Only
the funky, repeating bassline, disco-snare track
>Head Down and The Line Begins to Blur
the track with some very heavy and shouty verses and a pretty, melodic, ethereal chorus
>Lights in the Sky and Right Where it Belongs
the piano driven ballad

Plus Corona Radiata, The Four of Us Are Dying and Demon Seed feel like Ghosts leftovers (the latter one literally IS a leftover)
The only "original" track on that album is Echoplex.

ooh I really loved Echoplex. It's like a precursor (sorry) for their HM stuff.
Sunspots at least doesn't sound like anything off The Slip. Man I love that song.

I'm banking on them to bring in more sampling for their next album. They haven't sampled stuff (like they did in the nineties) for ages

I'm pretty new to NIN myself but I'm really digging their stuff. Anyone know any artists/albums that I'd like if I'm into NIN? I've heard Ministry is similar but I don't know which songs to check out.

nine inch nails biggest fan here.

You must not appreciate his work enough if you think he should keep going.

His early work was godlike

this recent stuff is meandering and lifeless.
>>
>>61860564
I appreciate that Trent is doing what he loves even after all these years. If he wants to keep making music then all the power to him. Yes his early stuff is godlike, yes his modern stuff is not, but it's still very, very good. Meandering and meaningless? Nah.
>>
>>61860564
>"biggest fan"
you do realize how pretentious this makes you sound?
"oh nine inch nails are rubbish now, they were so much better years ago, I should know I am their biggest fan!!!!1!1!1!1"
if you were their biggest fan you'd support them no matter what they did. otherwise your affliction for them is only conditional.

electronic music and EDM have only gotten insanely huge since trent and nin came on the scene in the 90's when the popularity in america was pretty much nonexsitant or underground.
I wonder if he will react to this.
Or will he just make another middling industrial album that is not bad but not amazing.

Your uncle bowie told you to shout you're a blackstar trent, dont let him down.
>>

Listen to Ministry "Twitch" "Land of Rape and Honey" "Mind is a Terrible Thing To Taste" and to some extent "Psalm 69" (which saw Ministry trading their synths for Speed Metal guitars- although the entire Psalm 69 album was still chopped and looped on samplers, technically it is still an Electronic album- just about everything except for Mike Scaccia's guitar solos was sampled into Akai samplers and looped).

Also see Ministry side groups like Revolting Cocks' early albums - their later post 1990 albums are garbage, each one worse than the last starting with 1993's Linger Ficken' Good. Listen to BigSexyLand and "Beers Steers and Queers."

Everything by Skinny Puppy up to and including 1992's Last Rights. Notable albums are "Bites" (Skinny Puppy's GOAT IMO), "Remission," "Mind: The Perpetual Intercourse" (Which features "Dig It," Reznor's inspiration for his first single, "Down In It" - MIND:TPI is highly recommended) "VIVISECT VI" is a 10/10.

"Too Dark Park" "Rabies" "Remission" are all classics. "Cleanse Fold and Manipulate" and "Last Rights" are good albums, but I consider them low points in Puppy's career. 1996's The Process sucks, it's their worst album IMO. Their post 2004 releases are decent, very different from their older work but worth listening to.
>>
>>61858406
Listen to Prick's self titled RIGHT NOW. Half of tje tracks or something were produced by Trent, theu have that TDS sound. More flamboyant and theatrical though.
>>
glad to see so this much Nine Inch Nails discussion. Was anybody here when Hesitation Marks came out people were posting which version they got? I miss those threads.
>>
>>61862681
I wasn't here but I've got the CD deluxe and now I'm thinking I should maybe have just bought the regular CD. The remixes are a little eh
>>
>>61860256
Adding to the stuff I said here >>61857112 the tracks where pretty good by themselves in spite of the lack of originality and most of it feeling like With Teeth with a slightly different sound. The other problem for me is that when you listen to the album all the way through the instrumental section that starts with Corona Radiata really feels like a buzzkill. Since's Corona is so long, the last three tracks take up the second half of the album. So you have one energetic half when you're absolutely pumped up then suddenly another half when it cools down and Trent steps away from the mic. Some people might really dig that, but for me getting the lightest tracks at the very end results in nothing but a final snoozefest. Think he should've either tried to get the tracks in a different order or just release the first 7 as an EP and the other 3 separately ('cause really, this album was so rushed and improvised it basically feels like an EP)

TL;DR it's pretty good like everything Trent does, but one of my least favorite NIN albums along with HM
>>
>>61861591
Are there Skinny Puppy records where the guy attempts singing or does anything other then "muh evil industrial speech"?
