Dream Theater are without a doubt one of the worst things to ever happen to prog rock. They are the ones responsible for changing prog rock from a genre characterized by experimentation and innovation into a genre that relies solely on following the preconceived steps. Have 10+ Minute track lengths? Check. Have some complex time signatures and rhythms? Check. Have a bit of jazz instrumentation randomly thrown in? Check. Throw in a few self masturbatory guitar solos and some random instrumental noodling? Check!
Literally prog rock by the numbers. DT does not have a creative bone in their entire body of collective work.

Being technical does not equate to being good creatively and songwriting/composition wise. Dream Theater are bad no matter which direction you look at. Their metal is weak compared to other metal; their non metal weak compared to the influences that those elements come from.
