Now that Bowie is dead, can we all agree that Kevin Barnes takes the mantle as the most evolving and varied musician? Seriously does anyone else even come close to the diversity of style and song quality that this man has maintained over the years? I doubt it, but im open to counter examples.

I hope that Kevin will soon get the respect that he deserves, the only thing holding him back is that Pitchfork spits in his direction, and he's making music today. Maybe give it a few years until people actually listen to of Montreal's music as serious art instead of disregarding it because Pitchfork knows their name.

Also a lot of content is a show of a good artist. He knows his fans want songs and he delivers.

I think he can't appreciate abstract and lyrics and needs to be spoon feed song meanings.
Pretty good artist, the Bowie influence can be felt pretty strong in most of his work. Hes also got a banging and unique voice.

While I love his work, the melodies were weak on Aureate Gloom and his "spoken word" style of singing comes off as pretty lazy and weak compared to his earlier work.
Also his constant bashing of his ex-wife is starting to get old.

I disagree. The progression throughout nearly every track on Aureate Gloom was astounding, the melodies were catchy while maintaining a more rock-oriented sound and the tone found a good balance between fun and depressing. As for the vocal style I guess it's just personal preference but I enjoy it. And the lyrics are some of my favourites. While they may tread familiar territory I still think it documents a new area of Kevin's relationship - dealing with Nina being with someone else. It's probably the most savage we've ever heard him and I love it for that.
