Looking back on it now, Bowie was pretty fucking tacky looking in the 90s. But what did people think of it back then? Did they think it was just typical 90s fashion, or did they realize how bad he looked even back then?

That is why both of those things.

Nah, he was still pretty bad ass. The hair/goatee/earring was pretty standard for the time. He pulled it off because he didn't look his age, what with his teenage hairline and all.

As i recall, no one thought much of his look one way or the other, or his music either. He was an elder statesman at that point so no one was going to talk shit, but no one other than long times fans gushed about it.

Is it just cause hes famous or is it his sensual voice and attitude, or do they really find him sexy just by his looks?

the way he dressed made sense at the time, it was the 90's.
He was hanging out with trent reznor as well.
Bowie was trying to hang out int the late 90's electronic scenes like industrial and d&b
>>
>>61801825
he looks fine hypebeast
>>
>>61806733
He looks like he could be dressed in Margiela of that period. You're right, he looks pretty fashionable for the time.
>>
>>61805135
If you look at any random Bowie concert, you can immediately tell what era its from by the fashion and to a lesser extent musical approach.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNqo0kIR-TU

Seriously, everything about this performance exudes that time period. The only thing that is unchanged is the song Ashes to Ashes (albeit played in a really 2000's way).

It really worked in the 70's and 80's, because the general aesthetic of those time periods were really distinctive and fashionable. Bowie seemed to never return to that classic/timeless look
>>
It was acceptable in the nineties
>>
>>61806733
He was always fashionable. I think he really fit best with the timeless look of 1980s fashion. A good haircut, leather jacket, and 80s jeans will always look good.

Bowie had a tendency to overdo his fashion in the 2000's

This Bowie looks rad
>>
>>61806835
you can do that with his music as well, his very early music is him trying to ape the whole 60's folk thing, he even had a song about dylan on hunky dory.
Then the whole glame rock thing happens and he becomez ziggy stardust.
Then during the thin white duke era his music gets real funky and dark and occultic and very 70's.
Then in the 80's he sells out and becomes the biggest pop star in the world with lets dance and modern love and his music is 80's as fuck, people should learn from this, if you are going to sell out make some good tunes.
then he took some time off and came back in the 90's dressing like some extra from the movie hackers and making industrial and D&B music inspired by nin and prodigy.
Then he had a bunch of heart attacks and probably decided he was too old for this shit and just sort of became himself but he still wore nice stuff.
Then he released black star and died
>>
>>61805926
>>His music of the 90s alone was really good though.

"Black tie white noise" ('93) and "hours" ('99) were kinda bad.
>>
>>61806160
those guys are still the only (non classical) concert i've ever been to

>>
>>61807117
>if you are going to sell out make some good tunes.
Let's Dance wasn't even expected to be a commercial success in Bowie's eyes. The albums he made afterwards were crap because he kept trying to regain the huge mainstream audience he got with Let's Dance.

>>61807200
I wish i was joking about this but i swear on my life it is true
>>
>>61801825
considering how Bono made the leap from 80's post-punk warrior to 90's pond scum i'm gonna say that old rockers pretty much just looked like this.

I guess Paul and George were the only ones who didn't go apeshit ugly during the mid 90's.

You could argue that he wound up being the first "serious" solo pop musician, or the artist type of sort. I can't think of anyone before him in the seventies with as much of a profile as he had who went in such an experimental, vastly different direction, minus the Beatles who were a band instead. It's not so much a trend as it is an archetype.

Listen to *all* his 70s albums, except Pin Ups. Scary Monsters was released in 1980, and it's the only 80s album of his you should bother with. All of his 90s albums deserve at least a listen or two, but if you're only looking for his best material, just go with Outside and Earthling. His 2000s material is okay, but you can skip it. Both 2010s albums are great, especially Blackstar.

Apparently when Bowie first met Warhol, Warhol was ambivalent towards him. Later he downright hated him for 'Andy Warhol'.

His voice feels so out of place hahahaha

>Bowie explained that he had not met Warhol when he wrote this song and he got an interesting reaction when he played it for him. Said Bowie: "I took the song to The Factory when I first came to America and played it to him, and he hated it. Loathed it. He went [imitates Warhol's blasé manner] 'Oh, uh-huh, okay...' then just walked away (laughs). I was left there. Somebody came over and said, 'Gee, Andy hated it.' I said, 'Sorry, it was meant to be a compliment.' 'Yeah, but you said things about him looking weird. Don't you know that Andy has such a thing about how he looks? He's got a skin disease and he really thinks that people kind of see that.' I was like, 'Oh, no.'

>you said things about him looking weird
what are the lyrics again?

Looks better than he did in the 70s. You're gonna tell me that a goatee and earring are worse than making yourself look like a transvestite alien covered in facepaint and glitter?
