This might also be true.
But "twee" is especially (maliciously) spirited. The strong implications behind the word in a musical context far exceed the criticism many artists in the genre deserve. The term is made useless, furthermore, by the fact that many "twee" songs are in fact very different from each other and could be more readily compared to a range of other genres including baroque, alt dance or even just rock or punk. Does a late Field Mice song sound anything like a Beat Happening song? Not the least that every "twee" artist is not always "cute" or uses primitive instrumentation.
That's what makes "twee" a meme in my book.
