I wish I knew. I have a fostex four-track and 80s drum machine. Lo-fi doesn't really write itself. I think you just gotta start writing shit and listening to a lot of other underground artists like R Stevie Moore, Tonetta, Michael Yonkers etc.

Cheap casios. Especially casiotones and SK-series, a nice (shitty) 4-track, a cheap guitar from a pawn shop, digital fx petals, a computer to process and 'master' it, and agoraphobia.

Gear matters a lot less than technique with this stuff, honestly. The only things I'd consider essential are digital fx and a tape deck.Try breaking down stuff like For Kate I Wait and anything else that has tabs and try to figure out why he used certain chords. Studying The Beatles is also really good for getting an ear for pop writing, and later studying some krautrock will let you twist it properly. Processing-wise, record something over a few times on the same tape, bounce between stuff like handheld recorders and boomboxes back to tape, and just generally overprocess it until you have a nice patina of lofi grime on it.
