I received my "Nothing has Changed" Vinyl after putting it off for months last wednesday. Started listening to it Sunday morning. Haven't stopped looping it since. I'm usually not satisfied with "best of" collections, but I have to say this definitely has most of Bowie's best work asides from the iconics (Change/Fame/Space Oddity/Heroes etc). Golden Years, Ashes to Ashes and China Girl are some of my favorites

Every time I get to the part where he's shouting I remember the recording process and it makes me love it even more
>Tony Visconti rigged up a system, a creative misuse of gating that may be termed "multi-latch gating", of three microphones to capture the vocal, with one microphone nine inches from Bowie, one 20 feet away and one 50 feet away. Only the first was opened for the quieter vocals at the start of the song, with the first and second opening on the louder passages, and all three on the loudest parts, creating progressively more reverb and ambience the louder the vocals became. Each microphone is muted as the next one is triggered. "Bowie's performance thus grows in intensity precisely as ever more ambience infuses his delivery until, by the final verse, he has to shout just to be heard....

Fair, but I have literally never heard anyone else mention it. Ever. It's hands-down in the top 25 of his golden era, and I think far higher, and I have never heard another person bring it up without me mentioning it first.

I'd say 3/4 of the people I heard mention Fascination were older black people, black people fucking loved Young Americans back during release. The other 1/4 are my jazz-and-funk minded musician friends.

Well, that makes sense. It was, technically, a Luther Vandross song, but he made it his own. It covers the theme of a sort of obsessive love I never hear portrayed with such intensity, honesty, and without condemnation in any other song, while sounding amazing. It's one of the absolute heights of Young Americans, and I absolutely love it.

>>61784000
Absolutely true. The whole album, very much including the outtakes, was beautifully lyricized, and that's putting aside the beautiful instrumentation and performances.

Also, I remembered a half-answer. I don't know if it is Bowie's best song, or the most well-orchestrated song, or anything like that. All I know is, as some have told me, and as I know, Young Americans is the greatest song of all time. Forever.

I posted that top 5. Basically what >>61788622 said.

The song's about feeling like someone who's died is still around, about to walk in the door at any moment. Bowie felt that way for a long time after his dad died, apparently. The song itself is a little sentimental and corny, but I like it. Makes me tear up, especially in light of his death.

Good song, far from the best though. It's not even the best song on that album, Teenage Wildlife is much better
>>

>>61789176
Even if that were true, even overrated artists have to have a best song
>>
>>61786419
I feel like TMWSTW does the rock thing much better and it's tempting to rate it higher because of that but Space Oddity is more of a balanced album because it has it's soft moments as well as jamming. Letter to Hermione is beautiful
>>
1. Station to Station
2. TVC15
3. Always Crashing in the Same Car
>>
>>61779980
TMWSTW because space oddity only has one really good song and a lot of eh while TMWSTW is pretty good throughout with a couple of high points (the title track and width of a circle for me)
