post music critics who really make you think
>>
Jesus christ I seriously don't think there is anyone more pretentious than someone who criticizes art for a living. You have a meaningless job where you criticize people for doing things that you probably aren't even capable of doing.

Scaruffi does it for fun, he is a cognitive scientist or something like that, not a professional critic

Sometimes I feel like there's some hope in him because he really says what he thinks and no artist is sacred.

But then he goes and rates Lil Wayne's shit A- when he give classics B and he just loses all legitimacy to me.

Well, the first statement is true as I see it, with the added valoration that the artists themselves are art critics. I also would change "art critic" for "audience"
Other than that this "meditation", as he calls it, is just delusional written masturbation
>>
>>61747291
that didn't tell me anything about the music
>>
>>61746830
If you had read some serious critique and not just seen a couple of fantano's videos, you'd realize is way more complex than to "critize" somebody or saying you don't like stuff. Not to mention that many of the best literature writers of all time also have written about critique.

"Who says an album review has to be about the music?" - Marcel

here's an even more extreme example from him:

I find that the people who consider most people "uninteresting" are the most insufferable and socially retarded people there are.

but the part of about people using facebook to "educate" is spot on. my friends always gives each the most idiotic fitness advice and end up never getting results then blame genetics for not losing weight.
drives me yonkers
>>
>>61747547
>Well, the first statement is true as I see it, with the added valoration that the artists themselves are art critics. I also would change "art critic" for "audience"
Yeah, he's saying that an artists view of their work (in the role of an audience or "critic") is also important. I don't see anything wrong with the statement.

>>61747023
i dunno why the beatles pasta is the goto pasta when this exists
anyway...

>the value of art depends on the values of the art critic
art is not subjective so this is wrong right off the bat

>most art is born as imitation, not innovation
yes this is fair, but a lot of innovative stuff is straight up retarded and nobody imitates it for good reason

>the critic, not the artist, is the one who defines innovation and rates it
something is innovative before somebody else notices it is innovative. it's innovative right when the artist is making it

>the artist is merely a vehicle for the ideology of the critic
i.e. a critic makes vague guesses because they aren't the actual artist

>the critic is the real artist
no, a critic is a historian of his own butt

>>
>>61748160
No one has ever been called pretentious for criticizing the concept of being a professional art critic.
>>
>>61747961
damn
>>
>>61748191
dude it's conceptual art

but seriously, the guy who wrote that Sophie review is friends with Marcel so they must share the same views on "an album review is its own art form it doesn't have to be about the music lol!!!"
>>
>>61746830
it's so true. critics get assblasted about this but it's fucking true.

people's opinions on art are completely arbitrary and change with the winds. the idea that you would try to cut the legs off of a hardworking artist's career because you don't happen to like their work disgusts me. what the fuck do you know?

like read about pauline kael. she would sit in the back of theaters at film festivals groaning loudly for everyone to hear at movies she didn't feel were good, and go up to people afterwords and say shit like "it was a little droopy in the middle". whatever the fuck that means.

the only criticism i'm down with is positive criticism (basically curation). find work nobody is paying attention to and tell them why they should be. but negative criticism, at least on a professional basis, is despicable to me.
>>
>>61746830
if you're criticising someone for doing something, chances are you wouldn't want to be capable of doing that thing anyways
of course, by that you meant "making music", showing you don't get what criticism is
>>
>>61748358
prepare to amount to nothing anon :)
>>
>>61748426
why
>>
>>61748358
critics don't kill people, people kill people
and pauline kael is just making herself unwanted
>>
>>61746830
Most critics at least know a little bit about music theory, or at least should.

>criticize people for doing things that you probably aren't even capable of doing.
This doesn't make sense. Their talent isn't necessarily in music (Even though some critics may have talent in music) it's in the writing. This is why sites like pitchfork are criticized. Their writing is extremely mediocre.

It's also not about telling the artist what to do, so much as it is about discussing music.
>>
>>61748358
if something isn't getting noticed but should be, that's usually because what is getting noticed is run-of-the-mill crowdpleasing junk

it's not like you can say, hey guys one direction is pretty great but check out this post-avant jazzcore too it's really great also

and there isn't any reason to be silent about stuff you don't like. that's how nazis will win.
>>
>>61748566
>if something isn't getting noticed but should be, that's usually because what is getting noticed is run-of-the-mill crowdpleasing junk
i don't think that's true at all. it's a big world, hardly anybody gets anywhere without a co-sign. "it's not what you know it's who you know"

>and there isn't any reason to be silent about stuff you don't like. that's how nazis will win.
i think it's different when we're talking about art. i think it's ridiculous to shut down music you don't like, in public, with authority, as if it was so bad it was going to kill 6 million jews. like just close your eyes nigga lmao.

Music criticism has been co-opted by self assured psuedo-
intellectuals and shills, and at this point is removed from
real scholar based analysis. If you review music for a living
you are absolutely worthless. That being said there is a big
difference between reviewing and studying music.

Change "critic" to "consumer" and he could be right... in a way.

He seems to have this notion that everyone agrees with what the critic says. In reality the critic is open to just as much criticism as he gives the artist. It's a potentially neverending cycle.
