how bad is pic related?
>>
>>61737907

Okay.. Btw you do get what I mean right? Basically the exposed wood part is being cut into by the ferrule I think, and so there's like a big hole cut in it. I'm just wondering if that would be a problem, but I thought not since its not the wood thread.
>>
Thinking about starting bass. My budget is ~300€
Any recommendations?
>>
I play a Warwick Thumb 5 into a Peavey Tour450 head+TC Electronic cab. I play death metal.
>>

Uh, is it at least comfy? I play a Corvette $$ 5 copy, never liked the look of the thumb.
>>
>>61737960
>Btw you do get what I mean right? Basically the exposed wood part is being cut into by the ferrule
Yes, when I said the wood fibers are being compressed I meant by that ferrule. It shouldn't be a problem, if it is then repair.
>I thought not since its not the wood thread.
There's two parts, the body, now damaged, and the neck, not damaged, yet. The wood around that ferrule is now compressed and the fibers of the wood have ripped apart slightly weakening the bond between the body, ferrule, and screw even though its tight now the wood at the compressed area may become fatigued at some point causing the area to degrade further needing the plug repair. Don't tighten the screw further or you risk damaging the neck.

Bring it to a tech, even just for inspection or a quote on the work needed. We can help here but maybe it's time for someone to inspect it personally.

Maybe later you can tell us what he said and we can assure if it's BS or not. In any case it's a good guitar and perhaps worth the repair.

I have no way of knowing how long, it may never need repair there are 3 other screws supporting it.
Slight damage really, you will just see a maple plug slightly larger than the hole is now, with the screw/ferrule in the middle.
The neck is removed, and the body is drilled with a forstner bit, using tape around the hole to further minimize any damage, generally you get a very clean hole. Using a maple or mahogany plug, glue the plug/.hole and drive in the plug, let glue cure overnight, sand flush on both sides, drill new hole in center of plug, and countersink pocket. Reassemble. Touch up plug with some tung oil to keep the wood protected and finished. I don't recommend you do it yourself, you need a drill press and positioning hardware to get it right.

It has higher fret access unlike a Gibson V, iirc they have contours at the back too that Gibbys don't have.

Yeah leave it, get it checked. The plug in the pic is sort of what it would look like the surrounding area is not damaged at all, there would just be a bare wood plug flush with the body, the screw and ferrule in the middle. The size of the plug would depend on the underlying damage but as small as possible. I wish I had a picture of an actual repair but I think you'll get the idea.

does anyone know the deal with musicstorelive or the stratosphere?

musicstorelive is in vermont where I live...it was really bizarre, theres basically nothing in this state for music stuff and the economy is really shitty and then all of a sudden these ads appear on craigslist of a spot that has a gajillion extremely valuable vintage guitars pops up and then its everywhere online with mega marketing budget (at least for guitar type shit for a 'small business') they sell a lot of 'open box' stuff for stupid cheap on ebay too somehow, even though they don't have an actual store.

stratosphere is in NH and has an incredible amount of parts from production guitars. If you have a current production gibson or fender, you can buy necks, bodies, pickups, etc from these guys who aren't affiliated with either company..always thought that was bizarre too. How does a non-affiliated company sell crap loads of what seem to be factory seconds of current production guitars? Wouldn't those companies usually destroy those items?

probably advisable to get a kit for the first couple builds

The worst part about building effects is ordering the parts and getting everything ready to go. Its annoying as fuck having to deal with lots and lots of tiny parts that require you to figure out their values. Also, the cost of parts doesn't add up to much, but often you will have to order parts from various distributors and have to pay incredibly annoying shit like 6 dollars shipping on 0.35 cents of parts. The shipping is what kills you when trying to build a pedal for cheaper than the production.

Actually building the pedal is very easy.

Not entirely relevant but I bought the baritone tele blacktop and, for the retail price, it was absolute garbage. Tuners were shit, pickups were muddy as hell and the position of the bridge meant it was impossible to intonate the low string. Luckily I got it second-hand for dirt cheap.

Like I said, not entirely relevant but I was totally not surprised when they discontinued the blacktop series. Definitely see if you can find one to try before you buy.

Squiers offer better bang for your buck, but you aren't going to get USA quality from a Squire.

So if you're deciding between an MIM Fender and a CV or VM Squier, get the Squier

That being said, USA Fenders are really cool and you should get one (used or new) if you can afford it. If you buy a guitar you can't afford, you're an idiot

Guilty as charged, not on this thread though. And I don't claim Gibsons are the best in the planet, all I say is no LTD can really compare to them. ESP? Yes, of course. Probably it's even better most of the time. Gibson has some shitty lines (Junior, Special). I'd love pic related tho and I'm not even a LP guy (the gibsons I like are SG, Explorer and Flying V, basically. Oh and Thunderbird bass).
Also 2016 Gibson Ts are tits!

1300 is way too much for a MIM, fine if it was MIJ though. The actual instrument is one of the most beautiful things Fender has ever done. I'd reckon nobody here has played one in person but the color really is unbelievable and is without a doubt part of the reason it costs so much.

Sure, I could probably figure it out by ear in a few weeks but that's my question: is that okay? I can play it like a parrot, repeating the notes without understanding them, but it would take me a lifetime of studying to "get" or "understand" all those complex relationships between tones and intervals and bla bla, which feels like a chore and I don't enjoy it at all.

I'm thinking that maybe it isn't worth the effort to do it half-assed like that.

The Ted Greene book on the OP suggests otherwise. But still, it's so much effort to put in for a hobby, don't get me wrong, I feel guilty for feeling this way, but why bother to learn the theory if I can just read tabs or tab out songs myself in order and just play.

>>61744455
I don't know about you but most bands I've auditioned for demand their guitar players to write at least the guitar arrengements. Also, in order to come up with material in the first place, the method par excelence is "let's get together and improvise!" which is scary for me because I revert back to pentatonic mode in that situation.

Technique is wider than shred. There's chord changes, stretching, multi dteing lines, weird voicings, overall timing, etc. It makes you better at expressing what you want to do musically and it may give you new ideas. Obsessing on technique is qhat's despised, not technique itself.

The problem with "interesting chords" is that they are position dependant. If you are just noodling around get used to shaping power chords or root's and 3rds to give it what you are looking forever. Alternatively, Find an interesting chord, and then learn it's positions and pick out some stuff for your whatever. There is a chord "wheel" of generally accepted "well sounding" chords that go together in a progression, a Google search should bring it up.

Name on cab VS head name means absolutely nothing. In theory they should match up better, but that is almost never the case. Since yours looks like a 2x12, just make sure and play it with any head you are looking to buy. Plenty of people use Marshall 1960 cabs with whatever head they want on it.
>>
>>61744982
What genre are you going for. I feel like some are harder to sing for than others.
>>
>>61745055
If you're playing a riff somewhere in the middle of nowhere on your neck, you need to find chords for that "position" which will keep you from a frustrating trip up and down the neck to play open basic/interesting chords? If you are simply talking chord progression, it's mostly trial and error, if it was all spelled out music would be pretty boring.

>>61744776
It's not any cheaper to upgrade pickups on a nice guitar than a cheap one. I'm tired of getting trashed for upgrading cheap guitars. I always get the same comment, "for $200 more you could have an intermediate instrument blah blah". I'm not putting mods into it to make it inter-fucking-mediate, I'm trying to make it exactly the guitar I want. I don't want to pay more for a fret job that's "pretty level," when either way I'm going to give it a fret job to make it perfect. If you demand perfection from an instrument, it's going to be cheaper to do it yourself. Yes, it's going to be harder. But it WILL be cheaper, and I don't want to hear otherwise ever again. It's fucking realistic that paying someone else for expert work costs more. Just like getting a carpenter to replace your doorknob, you ought to know you're throwing your money away.

Jesus fuck when will the Jazzmaster bullshit end? You play metal. What makes you think a Jazzmaster is a good guitar for metal? If you absolutely must ruin Jazzmasters for the rest of us who like them for how they play and not for the trendy look, you want the one with humbuckers and will probably want to swap them with something. You will also need a different bridge and the trem is not good for metal or hard rock. Do you know anything about guitars? What you want is probably almost the opposite of a Jazzmaster.
