So, david bowie was the absolute biggest, most significant death in all of music, right? I mean, you could say Paul Mccartney would be equal or something, but really does anyone even like the beatles more than David Bowie? Maybe more people outside of this board do, I dunno.
>>
>>61714509
what?
>>
Paul is an asshole.
>>
>>61714509
it's not as big as lennon's

or, for a recent example, jackson's

or even half as big as dylan's will be
>>
Bob Dylan maybe?
>>
paul is already dead tho
>>
>>61714522
Why is bob dylan that important? How could people care more about him than Bowie?
>>
>>61714523
Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham

i cant wait for him to die.
>>
>>61714548
Are you serious? Dylan established the modern singer songwriter image that we all know today, Bowie followed his steps in a much more flamboyant way
>>
>>61714548
Because he's a songwriting monolith who, like Bowie, was incredibly versatile. Not as versatile as Bowie, but still really damn adaptable in comparison to the competition.

He's Bob fucking Dylan man, no mans lyrics are so widely proliferated among the populace while still being fucking good.
>>
>>61714509
>you never hear a Bowie/Motörhead collab
>>
>>61714566
lol look up connie converse you fuckin retard
>>
Lennon was the biggest, but Elvis was a big one as well

I don't think any single artist will ever top those, purely because no single artist is as big now as they were then
Taylor maybe
If she died like next week, that might be as big as Lennon, for five minutes
>>
>>61714566
>>61714590
He was really fucking boring. He had 0 style, his voice was fucking annoying, his music is preachy. Yes, I am aware bowie made a song honoring bob dylan. It really doesn't matter to me, it's a matter of taste I guess. I just think bod dylan sucks. Not a bad guy, but terrible artist.
>>
>>61714594
haha it would sound like Lou Reed/Metallica collab
>>
>>61714605
That stupid plastic cunt.
>>
>>61714602
is this xusosis?
>>
>>61714610
Zero style? Have you listened to one of the mans records? I mean his voice is most definitely an acquired taste, but to say he has no style is madness. Plus he dropped the patchiness when he dropped the protest movement.
>>
>>61714605
No one outside of murrica cared about Elvis, while Lennon, Jackson, Bowie have been mourned by the whole world.
>>
>>61714625
no
>>
>>61714605
Lennon was killed though so that kind of explains why it was talked about more. I think Bowie had a bigger impact because of his final album
>>
>>61714602
Yeah she didn't really create anything because no one heard it retard, maybe you should research more than nothing at all. Whether or not she was the first is pretty much irrelevant because no one heard her stuff and pretty much no one was influenced by it. Besides, Dylan ripped off Guthrie, not Converse.
>>
>>61714639
>No one outside of murrica cared about Elvis

You serious? He was the motherfucking King Of Rock
>>
>>61714679
Only in murrica
>>
I fucking hate bob dylan's stupid country music.

Do you really think that? He was huge globally, strange opinion you have there

he's clearly under 18, ignore him.

made it myself

>>61714768
i like it desu
>>
>>61714548
Bob Dylan is easily the most influential artist of our time
>>
>>61714548
Dylan was arguably the first non-jazz artist in popular music history that people listened to seriously.

Plus in the mid 60s virtually everyone was influenced by him in some way. Let me put it this way, TVU, Hendrix and Buck Owens - all parts of scenes that had almost nothing to do with each other have cited Dylan as an influence. After the initial rock and roll boom of the mid to late 50s Dylan's probably the domino that caused the most other dominoes to fall in rock history.
>>
>>61714803
>not iggy pop
>not manson
>not jackson
>not elvis
>not any of the british invaders.
>>
i shouldn't be surprised, but it's funny that most of /mu/ is young enough to not remember Michael Jackson dying
>>
>>61714523
>>61714566
>>61714590
>>61714803
>>61714813
No one knows who's Dylan outside of Anglophone countries
>>
>>61714813
Dylan influenced the Beatles
Dylan got them into psychedelics
Dylan was a huge influence on the biggest rock band ever
>>
>>61714823
Iggy Pop counts as one of the people influenced by him. Dylan influenced Reed, Reed influenced Iggy Pop.

Definitely not Jackson, partially just because his moment of importance happened considerably later than Dylan's, Elvis has a claim to the prize but the thing is, Elvis in some shape or form was destined to happen given the cultural climate of America at the time. Dylan wasn't.

All of the major invaders have cited Dylan as an influence. He introduced The Beatles to pot, after all.
>>
>>61714845
Barely anyone knows about TVU in most of the United States. They're still influential/important.
>>
>>61714845
the same with Bowie
>>
>>61714823
Does Presley even really count as part of our time anymore?
>>
>>61714980
>this much goalpost moving
>implying your time is any longer than 15 years
>>
>>61715040
Elvis's only period of artistic relevance was during the 50's. It's been over half a century since then. I'd be asking the same thing if the anon mentioned Louis Armstrong (who's clearly the most influential popular musician period, but that's besides the point).
>>
>>61714845
Dylan was pretty huge in Italy, with a whole slew of singer/songwriters, who became pretty big here clearly influence by him.

Bowie was too gay and not lefty enough to become big in the 70s
>>
>>61715090
I agree about Louis but this thread was about the impact of their death and that's got a lot more to do with marketing than influence
>>
>>61715121
Yes, but the post I replied to was specifically about influence. See >>61714823 and >>61714803
>>
>>61715040
first off you're talking to several different people, so no one's moving goalposts on you

second, i count "our time" as the mid/late 60s onward, when emphasis moved to the album format and away from singles. i think that's a pretty loose, forgiving definition.

plenty of people my age still listen to the Beatles, but i've never really known anyone who wasn't elderly who listened to Elvis
>>
>>61715140
Right you are, I can't read
>>
Pharoah Sanders and Sonny Rollins. Last of the jazz greats still alive.
>>
>>61715176
Didn't even know Sanders was still alive.
>>
>>61715150
Yeah I see what you mean
My usual basis for judging how big an artist is is based on arbitrary things like how much plastic tat is made with their face on
And Elvis wins at that hands down
>>
>>61714645
Bowie's impact has already dissipated, it's a drop in the ocean to Lennon's.
>>
>>61715176
God fuck man i'm not ready for Pharoah to go

I was just talking about him going recently
>>
>>61715176
Herbie is still alive too
>>
>>61714967
the French love him desu
>>
>>61715369
Dylan tours Europe all the time.
>>
She wouldn't be enormous but Aretha Franklins death would be significant. I can't think of too many living legend black musicians
>>
kpop killed bowie
>>
>>61715420
Kanye West
>>
>>61715420
Chuck Berry
>>
The jailing of Bobby Shmurda was more significant tho
>>
>>61714594
>not bowie/hawkwind collab
pleb harder
>>
>>61715454
Like the other guy said about Elvis l don't think many people listen to Chuck Berry and will mourn him outside of his impact and legacy
>>
>>61715536
true
but same for Aretha Franklin
>>
>>61714509
It wasn't a big death just because it was Bowie. It was big because of how he planned and executed it.
>>
>>61715176
Roy Haynes too
>>
>>61715420
George Clinton
>>
Dylan, Little Richard, Carl Perkins (RIP), Eno and even McCartney maybe.
>>
>>61715573
nah it was big just because it was Bowie
99% of fans didn't even know Blackstar was a thing, that just added to it after the fact
>>
>>61715640
McCartney will be bigger than any of those besides maybe Dylan.
>>
>>61715640
Eno isn't going to be that big. Most normies only know him as "that guy who worked with Bowie and Roxy Music". He was never a huge public figure.
>>
>>61715770
Maybe, but McCartney was influenced a lot by Litte Richard and many popular rock groups from his time covered Litte Richard and Perkins' songs
>>
>>61715812
He had huge influence on New wave (fucking talking heads man) and german electronic music
>>
>>61715812
>Most normies only know him
gonna stop you right there
>>
>>61714860
by this logic it's really Woody Guthrie who we should be talking about
>>
>>61715090
And Elvis was a more digestible, more white rock and roll for mass audiences, a prefab superstar and nothing more.
>>
>>61715640

Dylan and McCartney yes.

The rest fuck no
>>
>>61714509
Paul has a legacy sure. But if he died would we lose anything like when we lost Bowie, no. He doesn't make anything redeemable now.
>>
Jackson was the biggest.

On the day of his death there were hard rock/alternative radio stations playing Michael Jackson songs.
>>
>>61716129

Besides he would never do a concept album about his own death in a million years. Dylan maybe, but McCartney no way
>>
Hey fellas,

Check out this exclusive footage:

>>
lennon's death seemed to last for weeks
partly because news stories don;t last so long now
partly because he was shot and of course that gave the news plenty to pick over

but bowie's death is kinda over already
he used it to promote his album, which is apparently about tumours or something
so that's not gonna last long is it, once everyone's over the shock no ones gonna be sitting there thinking 'oh i think i'll listen to the tumour album'
>>
>>61716362
wow m8, you should have like 1235385862387462 subscribers, truly underrated stuff right here
>>
>>61715909
No, because 1) let's be real, the point in which Dylan became the Dylan who's a legend is the electric era Dylan 2) Dylan's immediate influence was considerably larger than Guthrie's.
>>
>>61714509
Nah I'd say MJ was much bigger. MJ is just a lot more famous and a bit more relevant to younger people, also was in the public eye more with the weird behavior, molestation rumours and whole white skin thing.
>>
>>61716269
And let's be real, almost all of these artists have primarily white audiences whereas Jackson's death was something that noticeably affected both white and black communities.
>>
>>61716460
also mj was absolutely massive in the weirdest countries
places no other western music goes
>>
>>61716487
>western music
>black
>>
>>61716487

It's not weird he spread a message of unconditional love.
>>
>>61716583
yeah sorry i just meant unusual, as in, [those countries don't know many western artists at all, but mj is well known and loved]

i think you're right i think that was part of the reason

also the fact that he was as big as he was (king of pop) and he wasn't a white dude

inb4 white dude
>>
Hey fellas,
You should check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wCLmrap83E

Any icon is a loss because we just don't have them these days, just manufactured pop stars with everything else relegated to a mere side show
>>
>>61716554
It is.
>>
>>61714509
beethoven died once
>>
>>61714623
haha imagine if they did that
what an interesting album that would be
>>
It's hard to believe Lemmy's a year older than Dave in that picture.
>>
>>61714639
I have a disabled British aunt who'd beg to differ
>>
>>61716583
That's possibly the most western message imaginable.
